A horizontal tow-dimensional version of POM (Princeton Ocean Model) was modified in representing the bottom friction and the open boundary conditions. To simulate the flooding and drying of intertidal flats, a wetting-and-drying scheme was incorporated into the model. The model then was applied to the Chunsu Bay and its adjacent coastal water. Only the water movement due to tides, the dominant forcing in the study area, was considered. This presents the procedure and the results of model calibration and verification for the Chunsu Bay system. The model was calibrated, using the average tidal characteristics in Tide Tables, for the amplitudes and the phases of tidal waves throughout the modeling domain. Calibration results showed that the model gave a good reproduction of tidal waves. The calibrated model was verified using the time-series measurements of surface elevation and current velocity in the summer of 1995. The model reproduced the tides currents very well. calibration and verification results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing the tidal dynamics in the Chunsu Bay system.

Analysis has been made on the tide/storm surges characteristics near the Korean marginal seas in the 2008 and 2009 years using operational ocean prediction model of the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA). In order to evaluate its performance, its results were compared with the observed data by tidal stations around Korean Peninsula. The model used in this study predicts very well the characteristics of tide/storm surges near the Korean Peninsula. Simulated storm surges show the evident effects of Typhoons in summer season. The averaged root mean square error(RMSE) of 48 hr forecasting between the modeled and observed storm surges are 0.272 and 0.420 m in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Due to strong sea winds, the highest storm surges heights was found in summer season of 2008, however, in 2009, the high storm surges heights was also found in other seasons. When Typhoon Kalmaegi(2008) and Morokot(2009) approached to Korean Peninsular, the accuracy of model predictions is almost same as annual mean value but the precision accuracy for Typhoon Morakot is lower than of Typhoon Kalmaegi similar to annual results.

Recently, rising tendency of high water level is detected at southwestern coast. The result of harmonic analysis shows increasing trend of mean sea level, decreasing trend of the amplitudes of semi-diurnal tidal constituents, and increase of Sa tidal constituent, therefore, additional increase of high water level at Summer season. It shows also that maximum surge level has increased greatly, according to the frequent visit of big typhoon such as RUSA and MAEMI. Considering the correspondence of Sa and typhoon period, namely July${\sim}$September, extraordinary high water level would be more probable. Especially, Mokpo and Jeju would be considered to have many chances of extraordinary high water level in the future.
In this study, digital elevation models(DEM) of tidal flat, according to different times, was produced by means of the Drone and commercial software in order to measure seawater change during high tide at water-channel in the Hampyung Bay. To correct the produced DEMs of the tidal flat where is inaccessible to collect control points, the DEM matching method was applied by using the reference DEM, that is previously obtained, instead of the survey. After the ortho-image was made from the corrected DEM, the land cover classified image was produced. The changes of seawater amount according to the times were analyzed by using the classified images and DEMs. As a result, it was confirmed that the amount of water rapidly increased as the time passed during high tide.

The coastal water is a space where salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), critical energy-conveying mediator, stay to adapt to different environments while traveling between ocean and river ecosystems for spawning and growth. The mid-eastern coast of Korea (MECW) is the southern limit of salmon distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Understanding the distribution and migration characteristics of salmon in the MECW is important for the prediction of changes in the amount and distribution of salmon related to changes in the future marine environment. We analyzed the relationship between the salmon migratory timing ascending the Wangpi river and change in vertical seawater temperature and tidal elevation. Overall results highlight that (1) Salmon began to ascend the river when the sea surface water temperature (SST) decreased below 20℃; (2) The number of salmon ascending the river increased when the temperature difference between the upper and lower layers decreased, but decreased when the temperature difference was higher than 5℃; (3) The number of salmon ascending the river peaked, when the SST was 18℃-19℃ and sea levels rose at high tide. This study provide important insight into predicting changes in the ecosystem energy circulation through climate change at its southern distribution limit.

Climate change recently causes rapid rises in sea level in Baramarae intertidal area and the rises present several socio-economic impacts to the affected area. We have assessed the vulnerability of the region by the rise of the sea level. Using quantitative GIS method on multi-temporal satellite images, we have first estimated the elevation (Digital Elevation Model: DEM) of Baramarae intertidal area and hence we were possibly able to identify the flooded areas under the IPCC SRES scenarios. As sea level rises by 20cm, 30cm, 40cm, 50cm and 60 cm, the estimated flooded areas of the tidal flat are 68ha, 85ha, 103ha, 121ha and 139ha, respectively. The most affected area is the tidal flat in Gagyeongju Village (Gonam-li, Gonam-myeon, Taean, Chungnam), because it has not only lower altitude but also, perhaps more significantly smooth slope. The potential affected areas are currently populated by farming of oysters and short-necked clams and therefore the areas expect significant economic loss by rise of sea level.

Fourier analysis and a wavelet method were carried out to elucidate the characteristics of tidal residual components in coastal waters. The result of Fourier analysis shows tide-induced and monsoon-induced residuals are conspicuous at the short period and mid period, respectively. The tidal residuals were decomposed by period from 3 hours to 8 months and the characteristics of their components were shown by reconstituting them with short periods less than 24 hours, mid-periods between 1 day and 16 days and long periods longer than 1 month. The tidal residuals in the short period, i.e., tide-induced components, being based on the tidal elevation prediction errors, appear in the West Sea with high tidal ranges and do not have much seasonal fluctuation. Additionally, the period of typhoon induced surge ranges more or less than 12 hours. The mid-period components were clearly generated mainly in the West Sea during the winter and largely affected by monsoon. Accordingly, the pure surge height components were concentrated on the mid-period and had clear features for each coastal waters. The long period components show similar characteristics at all stations and are considered to stem from variations of mean sea levels.

In this paper, we have constructed high-resolution topographical map of macro-tidal Malipo beach through integration of terrestrial LiDAR measurement and MBES survey data at inter-tidal zone. To acquire the enough information of inter-tidal zone, we have done terrestrial LiDAR measurement mounted on the roof of vehicle with DGPS through go-stop-scan method at the ebb tide and MBES depth surveying with tide gauge and eye staff measurement for tide correction and MSL calculation at the high tide all together. To integrate two kinds of data, we have unified the vertical coordination standard to Incheon MSL. The mean error of overlapped inter-tidal zone is about 2~6 cm. To verify the accuracy of terrestrial LiDAR, RTK-DGPS measurement have done simultaneously and the difference of Z value RMSE is about 4~7 cm. The resolution of Malipo topographical map is 50 cm and it has constructed to DEM (Digital Elevation Model) based on GIS. Now it has used as an input topography information for the storm-surge inundation prediction models. Also it will be possible to use monitoring of beach process through the long-term periodic measurement and GIS-based 3D spatial analysis calculating the erosion and deposition considering with the artificial beach transition and coastal environmental parameters.

Representative tidal gauging (TG) stations are selected to cover the tidal characteristics of the Korean peninsula coastal seas, and the statistical parameters of the data are analysed from the perspective of the probability distribution at that TG station. The shape of the distribution in the Incheon and Gunsan TG stations, which are tide-dominated areas, shows two clear modes at HWONT and LWONT in the distributions, and in the Mokpo station, shows an asymmetric double peak distribution. In contrast, the frequency distribution shape shows a smoothed flat peak in the Jeju, Yeosu and Busan TG stations, and a single peak in the Pohang and Sokcho TG stations. The emersion and submersion equations suggested as the 6-parameter Gaussian mixture models in this study are accurate, and well fitted to the observed tidal elevation data. The ${\mu}_1$, ${\mu}_2$ parameters are highly correlated to the LWONT and HWONT, and the ${\sigma}_1$ and ${\sigma}_2$ parameters are also closely correlated to the mean tidal range. The ${\mu}_1$ and ${\mu}_2$ parameters coincide with the modes of the suggested probability distribution of the hourly tidal level data.
The distribution characteristics of tidal flat sediment components are used as an essential data for coastal environment analysis and environmental impact assessment. Therefore, a reliable classification map of surface sedimentary facies is essential. This study evaluated the applicability of regression kriging to generate a classification map of the sedimentary facies of tidal flats. For this aim, various factors such as the number of field survey data and remote sensing-based auxiliary data, the effect of regression models on regression kriging, and the comparison with other prediction methods (univariate kriging and regression analysis) on surface sedimentary facies classification were investigated. To evaluate the applicability of regression kriging, a case study using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data was conducted on the Hwang-do tidal flat located at Anmyeon-do, Taean-gun, Korea. As a result of the case study, it was most important to secure an appropriate amount of field survey data and to use topographic elevation and channel density as auxiliary data to produce a reliable tidal flat surface sediment facies classification map. In addition, regression kriging, which can consider detailed characteristics of the sediment distributions using ultra-high resolution UAV data, had the best prediction performance compared to other prediction methods. It is expected that this result can be used as a guideline to produce the tidal flat surface sedimentary facies classification map.
