  • This study investigates applying $TiO_2$ (titanium dioxide) nanoparticles to polypropylene nonwoven fabrics via electrospinning for the development of UV-protective materials. To fabricate uniform nanocomposite fibers, three types of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were applied: powder, colloid, and $TiO_2$ coated polymer pellets. $TiO_2$/polyurethane (PU) and $TiO_2$/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite fibers were electrospun and the morphology was examined using a field-emission scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. Layered fabric systems with electrospun $TiO_2$ nanocomposite fiber webs were developed at various concentrations of $TiO_2$ in a range of the web area density. The effects of $TiO_2$ concentration and web area density on UV-protective properties were examined. When $TiO_2$ colloid was added into a PVA polymer solution, uniform nanocomposite fiber webs in which $TiO_2$ particles were evenly dispersed were produced. Water-soluble PVA nanofiber webs were given a heat treatment to stabilize the electrospun PVA fibrous structure against dissolution in water. $TiO_2$/PVA nanoeomposite fiber webs with 2wt% $TiO_2$ and 3.0g/$m^2$ web area density exhibited an ultraviolet protection factor of greater than 50, indicating excellent UV protection.

  • This research studies the dynamic analysis of a concrete column reinforced with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles under earthquake load. The effect of nanoparticles accumulation in a region of concrete column is examined using Mori-Tanaka model. The structure is simulated mathematically based on the theory of sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT). By calculating strain-displacement and stress-strain relations, the system energies include potential energy, kinetic energy, and external works are derived. Then, using the Hamilton's principle, the governing equations for the structure are extracted. Using these equations, the response of the concrete column under earthquake load is investigated using the numerical methods of differential quadrature (DQ) and Newark. The purpose of this study is to study the effects of percentage of nanoparticles, nanoparticles agglomeration, geometric parameters and boundary conditions on the dynamic response of the structure. The results indicate that by increasing the volume percent of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles, the maximum dynamic deflection of the structure decreases.

  • The morphology, crystal structure and size of aerosol nanoparticles generated by erosion of electrodes made of different materials (titanium, copper and aluminum) in a multi-spark discharge generator were investigated. The aerosol nanoparticle synthesis was carried out in air atmosphere at a capacitor stored energy of 6 J, a repetition rate of discharge of 0.5 Hz and a gas flow velocity of 5.4 m/s. The aerosol nanoparticles were generated in the form of oxides and had various morphologies: agglomerates of primary particles of $TiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ or aggregates of primary particles of $Cu_2O$. The average size of the primary nanoparticles ranged between 6.3 and 7.4 nm for the three substances studied. The average size of the agglomerates and aggregates varied in a wide interval from 24.6 nm for $Cu_2O$ to 46.1 nm for $Al_2O_3$.

  • The aerosol nanoparticles are suspected to be exposed to workers in nanomaterial manufacturing facilities. However, the exposure assessment method has not been established. One of important issues is to characterize background level of nanoparticles in workplaces. In this study, intensive aerosol measurements were made at a $TiO_2$ manufacturing laboratory for five consecutive days in May of 2010. The $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were manufactured by the thermal-condensation process in a heated tube furnace. The particle number size distribution was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer every 5 min, in order to detect particles ranging from 14.5 to 664 nm in diameter. Total particle number concentration shows a severe diurnal variation irrespective of manufacturing process, which was governed by nanoparticles smaller than 50 nm in diameter. During the background monitoring periods, significant peak concentrations were observed between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. due to the infiltration of secondary aerosol particles formed by photochemical smog. Although significant increase in nanoparticle concentration was also observed during the manufacturing process twice among three times, these particle peak concentrations were lower than those observed during the background measurement. It is suggested that the investigation of background particle contamination is needed prior to conducting main exposure assessment in nanomaterial manufacturing workplaces or laboratories.

  • Two types of polymers were tested in this study; poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as a synthetic example and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a natural polymer. DSC analyses showed that the use of nanofiller increased the degree of crystallinity ($X_c$) of both PET and PLA polymers, but the effect was more noticeable on PET nanocomposites. The crystallization of PLA and PET nanocomposites occurred at higher temperatures in comparison to neat polymers. According to dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis (DMTA), the damping factor of PET/$TiO_2$ nanoparticles decreased compared to the neat matrix, but for PLA nanocomposites the opposite trend was observed. Results of the mechanical test showed that for both PET and PLA nanocomposites, the most successful toughening effect was observed at 3 wt% loading of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. SEM micrographs revealed uniform distribution of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles at 1 and 3 wt% loading levels. The results of WAXD spectra explained that the polymorphs of PLA and PET was not affected by $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. UV-visible spectra showed that $TiO_2$ nanocomposite films had high ultraviolet shielding compared to neat polymer, but there was significant reduction in transparency.

  • Characteristics of $TiO_2$nanoparticles controlled by precursor flow rate and reaction temperature in chemical vapor condensation process were interpreted in the view of decisive reaction factors, i.e. supersaturation ratio, concentration of vapor molecule, collision frequency and rate, and residence time, which directly affect the particle size and size distribution in CVC reactor. As results, the increases of precursor flow rate and reaction temperature induced the increase in the average sizes of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles in CVC reactor by acceleration of coagulation growth due to the increase of collision between $TiO_2$vapor molecules and particles. The effects of reaction factors on the characteristics of$TiO_2$nanoparticles were discussed with considering particle formation process in CVC reactor under given process parameters.

  • This paper describes the electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of small biomolecules on the surface of Pt-Ru nanoparticles supported by $TiO_2$-hollow sphere prepared for use in sensor applications or fuel cells. The $TiO_2$-hollow sphere supports were first prepared by sol-gel reaction of titanium tetraisopropoxide with poly(styrene-co-vinylphenylboronic acid), PSB used as a template. Pt-Ru nanoparticles were then deposited by chemical reduction of the $Pt^{4+}$ and $Ru^{3+}$ ions onto $TiO_2$-hollow sphere ($Pt-Ru@TiO_2-H$). The prepared $Pt-Ru@TiO_2-H$ nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and elemental analysis. The electrocatalytic efficiency of Pt-Ru nanoparticles was evaluated via ethanol, methanol, dopamine, ascorbic acid, formalin, and glucose oxidation. The cyclic voltammograms (CV) obtained during the oxidation studies revealed that the $Pt-Ru@TiO_2-H$ nanocomposites showed high electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of biomolecules. As a result, the prepared Pt-Ru catalysts doped onto $TiO_2$-H sphere nanocomposites supports can be used for non-enzymatic biosensor or fuel cell anode electrode.

  • This study is to assess the photocatalytic degradation of PET and Nylon 6 films containing nano-sized $TiO_2$ powders of anatase and rutile types. The PET and Nylon 6 films containing six kinds of the nanoparticles were prepared by melt casting method using a heating press machine. Reflectance in visible region and water contact angles of the irradiated PET and Nylon 6 composite films decreased with increasing UV/$O_3$ irradiation. Also the enhanced hydrophilicity has a close relationship with the increase in the Lewis base parameter, which indicates more oxidized polymer surfaces. The photocatalytic degradation of the nanocomposite films increased with increasing $TiO_2$ content and UV energy, which is more significant with the anatase types rather than the rutile types. The amide linkages in the Nylon 6 seemed to be more susceptible to the UV light compared to the ester groups in the PET, particularly in the presence of the $TiO_2$ photocatalysts. The photoscission and photodegradation of the polymers in the composites produced more degraded structure assisted by the photocatalytic activity of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Also the composite films can bleach the methylene blue dyes more easily under the UV/$O_3$ irradiation, suggesting the photobleaching activity of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • In this study, we investigate the potential use of $TiO_2@SiO_2$ and $ZnO@SiO_2$ core/shell nanoparticles (NPs) as effective UV shielding agent. In the typical synthesis, $SiO_2$ was coated over different types of $TiO_2$ (anatase and rutile) and ZnO by sol-gel method. The synthesized $TiO_2@SiO_2$ and $ZnO@SiO_2$ NPs were characterized by UV-Vis, XRD, SEM and TEM. The UV-vis absorbance and transmittance spectra of core@shell NPs showed an efficient blocking effect in the UV region and more than 90% transmittance in the visible region. XRD and SAED studies confirmed the formation of amorphous $SiO_2$ coated over the $TiO_2$ and ZnO NPs. The FESEM and TEM images shows that coating of $SiO_2$ over the surface of anatase, rutile $TiO_2$ and ZnO NPs resulted in the increase in particle size by ~30 nm. In order to study the UV light shielding capability of the samples, photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye on $TiO_2@SiO_2$ and $ZnO@SiO_2$ NPs was performed. Photocatalytic activity for both types of $TiO_2$ NPs was partially suppressed. In comparison, the photocatalytic activity of ZnO almost vanished after the $SiO_2$ coating.

  • This study is unrefined ZnO, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles is expose M4 medium to search nanoparticle aggregation and Daphnia magna was any effect by immobilization and mortality. ZnO and $TiO_2$ nanoparticle powder-size is respectively 20 nm and 40 nm. but, M4 medium has about respectively as 1333 nm and 1628 nm, 40 to 70 times were agglomerated. Immobilization of ZnO and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was influenced both time and concentration the higher to swimming of D.magna. Especially, The immobilization of D.magna in nano-ZnO is greater than that influence in nano-$TiO_2$. Mortality of ZnO nanoparticle is higher rate at long time and high concentration. $TiO_2$ nanoparticle observed mortality at 10ppm concentration after 72h. Consequently, when Nanoparticles is introduced into ocean. Particle size become grow. Additionally, aggregation be caused affect aquatic ecosystems.
