  • TiC coating formed on $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composite ceramic by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has an improved microstructures, better thermal shock resistance and interfacial bonding than TiN coating does. TiN coating formed by CVD, however, has lower friction coefficients against steels and better chemical stability. The experimental results indicate that the coated insert is superior to the uncoated one in flank and crater wear resistance. And the multilayer coating shows an improved wear resistance than the monolayer coating.

  • Effects of TiN/Ti multilayer coating on the Ti-30Ta-xZr alloy surface were studied by using various experiments. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr (5, 10 and 15 wt%) were melted 10 times to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace. And then samples were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were prepared for TiN/Ti coating by cutting and polishing. The prepared specimens were coated with TiN/Ti multilayers by using DC magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), EDX, and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). From the microstructure and XRD analysis of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, The equiaxed structure was changed to needle-like structure with increasing Zr content. And $\alpha$-peak and elastic modulus increased as Zr content increased. The $\alpha$ and $\beta$ phase predominantly were found in the specimen containing high Zr content. According to the analysis of TiN/Ti coating layer, the surface defects and structures of Ti-30Ta-xZr were covered with TiN/Ti coating layer and surface roughness decreased.

  • The tribological properties of TiC, TiN and TiC/TiN coatings on steels prepared by the cathodic-arc (CA) ion plating technique were investigated. Experiments were carried out on a tribo-test machine using a Falex journal V block system. The friction and wear characteristics of the coatings were determined by varying the applied load and sliding speed. The TiC, TiN and TiC/TiN coatings markedly increased the tribological characteristics of the surface. As far as a single layer coating was concerned, TiN goes better results than TiC. However, the TiC/TiN multilayer coating performed better than either single layer coating. The major factor in the improved performance of the multilayer coating was the role of TiC in improving the adhesion between the external TiN layer and the substrate steel.

  • $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N/CrN$ nano-multilayers, which are known to have excellent wear resistance, were prepared using an unbalanced magnetron sputter to have various periods of 2-5 nm. $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N$ had a hexagonal structure in a single layer, but converted to a cubic structure by forming a multilayer with CrN, which has a cubic structure. Thus, $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N$ formed a superlattice in the multilayer. The $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}/CrN$ multilayer with a period of 2.5 nm greatly exceeded the hardness of the $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N$ and the CrN single layer, reaching 39 GPa. According to the low angle X-ray diffraction results, the $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N/CrN$ multilayer maintained its as-coated structure to a temperature as high as $700^{\circ}C$ and exhibited hardness of 30 GPa. The thickness of the oxide layer of the $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N/CrN$ multilayered coating was less than one-tenth of those of the single layers. Thus, $Ti_{0.33}Al_{0.67}N/CrN$ multilayered coating had hardness and oxidation resistance far superior to those of its constituent single layers.

  • Ceramic coatings with high hardness and excellent chemical stability have been successfully applied to various machine elements, tools, and implants. However, in the case of monolayer coating on soft substrates, a high-stress concentration at the interface between the coating and the substrate causes delamination of the coating layer. Recently, to overcome this problem, multilayer coatings with a metal layer with a low modulus of elasticity added between the ceramic and the substrate have been widely applied. This study presents the third part of a recent study and focuses on the effect of the number of coating layers on the Brinell hardness of multilayered coating with TiN/Ti, following the two previous studies on a new Brinell hardness test method for a coated surface and on the influence of substrate and coating thickness. Indentation analyses are performed using finite element analysis software, von Mises stress and equivalent plastic strain distributions, load-displacement curves, and residual indentation shapes are presented. The number of TiN/Ti layers considerably affect the stress distributions and indentation shapes. Moreover, the greater the number of TiN/Ti layers, the higher is the Brinell hardness. The stress and plastic strain distributions confirm that the multilayer coatings improve the wear resistance. The results are expected to be used to design and evaluate various coating systems, and additional study is required.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC), Titanium nitride(TiN), and Titanium carbonnitride(Ti(C,N)) films were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$, $TiCl_4-N_2-H_2$, and $TiCl_4-CH_4-N_2-H_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The experimental results indicate that TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings on $Si_3N_4$ -TiC ceramic have an improved microstructural property, good thermal shock resistance, and good interfacial bonding. However TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good chemical stability. It is found by cutting test that coated insert compared with $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramic have a superior flank and crater wear resistance. And multilayer coating compared with monolayer coating shows a improved wear resistance.

  • Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN nano-multilayers, which are known to exhibit excellent wear resistances, were prepared using the unbalanced magnetron sputter for various periods of 2-7 nm. Ti0.5Al0.5N and CrN comprised a cubic structure in a single layer with different lattice parameters; however, Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN exhibited a cubic structure with the same lattice parameters that formed the superlattice in the nano-multilayers. The Ti0.5Al0.5/CrN multilayer with a period of 5.0 nm exceeded the hardness of the Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN single layer, attaining a value of 36 GPa. According to the low-angle X-ray diffraction, the Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN multilayer maintained its as-coated structure up to 700℃ and exhibited a hardness of 32 GPa. The thickness of the oxidation layer of the Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN multilayered coating was less than 25% of that of the single layers. Thus, the Ti0.5Al0.5N/CrN multilayered coating was superior in terms of hardness and oxidation resistance as compared to its constituent single layers.
