TiC-Ni and TiC-Ni-Mo cermet powders were produced by Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. The cooling rate of synthesized powders were controlled by using the V-shaped copper jig and the carbide size decreased with increasing the cooling rate I. e decreasing the width of copper jig Round shape carbide particles were produced after SHS reaction in TiC-Ni as well as TiC-Ni-Mo powders. Local segregation of Mo rich phases was observed in SHS powder of TiC-Ni-Mo and the uneven dis-triobution of Mo promoted the faster growth rate of carbide particles during sintering compared to the same composition specimen with commercial TiC powder. Howogeneous microstructure of TiC-Ni-Mo cermet was obtained when the elemental Mo powder was mixed with the SHS powder of TiC-Ni.
The TiC-(Ni/Ti) composites were prepared by reaction bonding between TiC preforms and the melted mixture of Ni/Ti metal the atomic ratio of which were the ranges of 0.3 to 3. And their microstructures phase composi-tions and mechanical properties were investigated. During reaction bonding Ni/Ti metal mixture had a good wettability an permeability with TiC preforms and pore-free and fully dense sintered bodies were fabricated. TiC particle shape changed from spherical to angular platelet-like and grain size was grown with Ni/Ti atomic ratio increasing from 0.3 to 1. whereas grain growth of TiC particle was restrained and its shape changed gain from angular platelet-like to spherical when Ni/Ti atomic ratio was more than 2. Maximum bending strength and fracture toughness were obtained at the Ni/Ti atomic ratio being 1 their values were 582 MPa and 11.1 MPa.m1/2 respectively.
The synthesis of NiTi alloy powders by hydrogen reduction and dehydrogenation process of NiO and $TiH_2$ powder mixtures is investigated. Mixtures of NiO and $TiH_2$ powders are prepared by simple mixing for 1 h or ball milling for 24 h. Simple-mixed mixture shows that fine NiO particles are homogeneously coated on the surface of $TiH_2$ powders, whereas ball milled one exhibits the morphology with mixing of fine NiO and $TiH_2$ particles. Thermogravimetric analysis in hydrogen atmosphere reveals that the NiO and $TiH_2$ phase are changed to metallic Ni and Ti in the temperature range of 260 to $290^{\circ}C$ and 553 to $639^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the simple-mixed powders by heat-up to $700^{\circ}C$, agglomerates with solid particles and solidified liquid phase are observed, and the size of agglomerates is increased at $1000^{\circ}C$. From the XRD analysis, the presence of liquid phase is explained by the formation and melting of $NiTi_2$ inter-metallic compound due to an exothermic reaction between Ni and Ti. The simple-mixed powders, heated to $1000^{\circ}C$, lead to the formation of NiTi phase but additional Ni-, Ti-rich and Ti-oxide phases. In contrast, the microstructure of ball-milled powders is characterized by the neck-grown particles, forming $Ni_3Ti$, Ti-oxide and unreacted Ni phase.
Variation in oxidation behavior with heat treatment temperature is investigated for a Ni-Ti alloy using X-ray diffraction, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and Auger electron spectroscopy. And the effect of oxidation on transformation behavior and superelasticity is characterized. A cold-worked 50.6Ni-Ti alloy is oxidized at 300-$700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in the air atmosphere. With an increase in heating temperature, the structure of $TiO_2$ changes from amorphous (300 and $400^{\circ}C$) to anatase ($500^{\circ}C$), and to rutile ($700^{\circ}C$). Activation energy of oxidation for NiTi is measured to be 51 Kcal/mol when heating temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ or above. Since Ti reacts preferably with oxygen, Ni content increases between matrix and oxide, forming $Ni_{3}Ti$ compounds. The resultant of oxidation decreases significantly $M_s$ and $A_s$ temperature in the specimen oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ with $B_2{\rightarrow}M$ transformation path. An extra is found on cooling between two peaks in the specimen with $B_2{\rightarrow}R{\rightarrow}M$ one which is oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$. Oxidation deteriorates superelasticity due to formation of Ni-rich compound.
The TiC-Ni/Al reaction-bonding composites were prepared by the infiltration of Ni/Al melt into the TiC preforms. The microstructure the reaction composition crystalline phase and the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. During the reaction-bonding Ni/Al mixture had a good wettability and per-meability with TiC preform and pore-free and fully dense sintered bodies were produced. In the case of the Ni/Al atomic ratio of 0.3 and 0.5 TiC raw particle shape was changed to irregular particles because of the decomposition in the liquid matrix and its phenomena was more distinguished in the Al-rich liquid matrix. With increasing more than 1 of the Ni/Al atomic ratio the sample of TiC grain shape was changed from spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture toughness were increased and its maximum value was 1073 MPa and 11 MPa.m1/2 respectively.
$SiO_2$ and polycrystalline Si layers were sequentially grown on (100) Si. NiSi was formed on this substrate from a 20nm Ni layer or a 20nm Ni/5nm Ti bilayer by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at $300~500^{\circ}C$ to compare thermal stability. In addition, MOS capacitors were fabricated by depositing a 20nm Ni layer on the Poly-Si/$SiO_2$substrate, RTA at $400^{\circ}C$ to form NiSi, $BF_2$ or As implantation and finally drive- in annealing at $500~800^{\circ}C$ to evaluate electrical characteristics. When annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, NiSi made from both a Ni monolayer and a Ni/Ti bilayer showed excellent thermal stability. But NiSi made from a Ni/Ti bilayer was thermally unstable at $500^{\circ}C$. This was attributed to the formation of insignificantly small amount of NiSi due to suppressed Ni diffusion through the Ti layer. PMOS and NMOS capacitors made by using a Ni monolayer and the SADS(silicide as a dopant source) method showed good C-V characteristics, when drive-in annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ for 20sec., and$ 600^{\circ}C$ for 80sec. respectively.
The microstructures and properties of TiC dispersed nickel-base alloy were studied in this work. The alloy prepared by powder metallurgical processing was solution treated, 1st-aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, and then 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Microstucture of sintered specimen showed that TiC particles are uniformly dispersed in Ni base alloy. In the specimen aged at $880^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours, the fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates with round shape are observed and the very fine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) particles with round shape are precipitated in the specimen aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The presence of ${\gamma}$precipitates in TiC/Ni base alloy increased the hardness and wear resistance of the specimen. The hardness and wear resistance of the Ni-base with TiC are higher than those of conventional Ni-base superalloy X-750 because of dispersion strengthening of TiC particles. The hardness, transverse rupture strength and resistance of the specimen 2nd-aged at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours are higher than those of 1st-aged specimen due to ultrafine $\gammaNi_3$(Al,Ti) precipitates.
The thermal stability of Cu/Ti(or Ta)/NiSi contacts was investigated. Ti(Ta)-capping layers deposited to form NiSi was utilized as the Cu diffusion barrier. Ti(Ta)/NiSi contacts was thermally stable upto $600^{\circ}C$. However when Cu/Ti(Ta)/NiSi contacts were furnace-annealed at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 40 min., the Cu diffusion was found to be effectively suppressed, but NiSi was dissociated and then Ni diffused into the Cu layer to form Cu-Ni solutions. On the other hand, the Ni diffusion did not occur for the Al/Ti/NiSi system. The thermal instability of Cu/Ti(Ta)/NiSi contacts was attributed to the high heat of solution of Ni in Cu.
The effects of the carbon content ranging from 17.5 to 21.0 wt.% in TiC-30vol.% $Ni_3Al$ cenmet and the $Mo_2C$ content raging from 0 to 30 wt.% in TiC-20 vol.% $Ni_3Al$ cermet were investigated in the relation to the microstures and harbness. The speciment were sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$, 143$0^{\circ}C$ and 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 60minutes. The results were summarized as follows; 1) The shrinkages and relative densitites of the specimens were incrased up to 20.0 wt.% C and then decreased. 2) The grains of TiC were almost the same size with the different content of carbon. Free carbons were appeared on the microstrures when carbon was added over 20.5 wt.% while TiC and $Ni_3Al$l were formed when carbon was added below 20.0 wt.%; 3) The lattice parameters of the $Ni_3Al$ and TiC phases were increased up to 20.5 wt.% C, and then saturated. 4) The hardess was increased up to 20.0 wt.% C, and then decreased. 5) The $Mo_2C$ made the TiC grains fine and the surrounding structure around TiC gains. 6) The micropores were decreased with increasing the binder and the sintering temperature. 7) The lattice parameter of the $Ni_3Al$l ana TiC were almost the samp up to 10 wt.% $Mo_2C$ and then decreased. 8) The hatdness was increased up to 5wt.% $Mo_2C$ and then decreased owing to the micrpores. 9) The more the binder phase, the higher the relative density and the proper $Mo_2C$ amount of $TiC-Ni_3Al$ cermets were obtained.
