  • In this study, the influence of silicon contents on the microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were systematically investigated for application of cutting tools. The composition of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were controlled by different combinations of TiAl2 and Ti4Si composite target powers using an arc ion plating technique in a reactive gas mixture of high purity Ar and N2 during depositions. Ti-Al-Si-N films were nanocomposite consisting of nanosized (Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites embedded in an amorphous Si3N4/SiO2 matrix. The instrumental analyses revealed that the synthesized Ti-Al-Si-N film with Si content of 5.63 at.% was a nanocomposites consisting of nano-sized crystallites (5-7 nm in dia.) and a three dimensional thin layer of amorphous Si3N4 phase. The hardness of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings also exhibited the maximum hardness value of about 47 GPa at a silicon content of ~5.63 at.% due to the microstructural change to a nanocomposite as well as the solid-solution hardening. The coating has a low friction coefficient of 0.55 at room temperature against an Inconel alloy ball. These excellent mechanical and tribological properties of the Ti-Al-Si-N coatings could help to improve the performance of machining and cutting tool applications.

  • Magnetron sputtered TiN, (Ti, Al)N and TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coatings grown on cemented carbide substrates have been characterized by using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), nanoindentation, scratcher and cutting tests. Results show that TiN coating is bell mouth columnar structures, (Ti, Al)N coating is straight columnar structures and the modulation structure has been formed in the TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating. TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating exhibited higher hardness, better adhesion with substrate and excellent cutting performance compared with TiN and (Ti, Al)N coating.

  • TiAlCN coatings with various C contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The characteristics, the crystalline structure, surface morphology, hardness, and friction coefficient of the coatings as a function of the C content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), a microhardness tester, and a wear test. In addition, their corrosion behaviors in a deaerated 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at $40^{\circ}C$ were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results indicated that the $Ti_{14.9}Al_{15.5}C_{30.7}N_{38.9}$ coating had the highest hardness, elastic modulus, and a plastic deformation resistance of 39 GPa, 359 GPa, and 0.55, respectively, and it also had the lowest friction coefficient of approximately 0.26. Comparative evaluation of the TiAlCN coatings indicated that a wide range of coating properties, especially coating hardness, could be obtained by the synthesis methods and processing variables. The microhardness of the coatings was much higher than that from previously reported coating using similar magnetron sputtering processes. It was almost as high as the microhardness measured from the TiAlCN coatings (~41 GPa) synthesized using an arc ion plating process. The potentiodynamic test showed that the corrosion resistance of the TiAlCN coatings was significantly better than the TiAlN coatings, and their corrosion current density ($i_{corr}$), corrosion potentials ($E_{corr}$) and corrosion rate decreased with an increasing C content in the coatings. The much denser microstructure of the coatings due to the increased amount of amorphous phase with increasing C contents in the coatings could result in the the improved corrosion resistance of the coatings.

  • TiAlN coatings are available in various industry fields as a wear resistant coating for high-speed machining, due to its high hardness, excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of TiAlN multilayer coatings is better than that of single TiN coatings. Most of TiAlN coated layers were formed by heat treatment of coating layers with a non-stoichiometric $Ti_xAl_{1-x}N$. In this study, TiAlN coated layer was prepared by R.F magnetron sputtering and investigated the thermal behavior for heat treatment at various temperature in tube furnace. The formation of large particles with porous microstructure and phase change from HCP to FCC were observed on coated layer during heat treatment over $850^{\circ}C$ and it reduced the corrosion resistance of coated TiAlN layers.

  • Titanium nitride and related overlayers produced by arc ion plating (AIP) are applied as commercial coatings in world-wide scale since the middle of 80s. Due to the achievements of low temperature deposition (LTD), they begin now to be used as wear and corrosion-resistant coatings for machine parts, besides applications on cemented carbide and high speed steel cutting tools. On the other side, TiN can be now applied successfully to brass, Al-alloy, ZnAl alloy articles as decorative coating through LTD. Various nitrides, carbonitrides, borides and other refractory compounds, such as (Ti, Al)N, TiCN, CrN, are used as the coatings for special heavy-duty working conditions instead of TiN since 90s. More and more multilayer coatings are applied now substituting single layer ones. Duplex processes are under development.

  • $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N multilayered coatings are performed by their periodically repeated structures of lamellae of WC-Ti/$WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ Nmaterials. The $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with variable Al content were deposited onto AISI D2 steel by cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. The electrochemical behavior of multilayered $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with different phases (WC- Ti$0.6/Al_{0.4}$ N, $WC-Ti_{0.53}$$Al_{0.47}$N, $WC-Ti_{0.5}$ $Al_{0.5}$ N and $WC-Ti_{ 0.43}$$Al_{0.57}$ N) was investigated in deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The corrosion behaviors for the multilayered coatings were investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization) and surface analyses (X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES)). In the petentiodynamic polarization test, the corrosion current density of $WC-Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$N was lower than others.

  • Hard coatings are known to improve the performance of cutting tools in aggressive machining applications, such as high speed machining. New superhard Ti-Al-Si-W films, characterized by a nanocomposite nano-sized (Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites embedded in amorphous $Si_3 N_4$ matrix, could be successfully synthesized on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating(AIP) and sputtering method. The hardness of Ti-Al-Si-N film increased with incorporation of Si, and had the maximum value ~50 GPa at the Si content of 9 at.%, respectively. And the X-ray diffraction patterns of Ti-Al-Si-N films with various Si content is investigated. In this study, Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were applied to end-mill tools made of WC-Co material by a hybrid coating system. Cutting tests fir the high-hardened material (STD11,$H_R$)C62 and their performances in high speed cutting conditions were studied. Also, the tool wear and tool lift of Ti-Al-Si-N with various si(6, 9, 19) contents were measured.

  • ($Ti_{ 1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N has been deposited on high speed steel (HSS) substrate using PECVD from the gas mixture of $TiC1_4$, $AlC1_4$, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and Ar. The correlation between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was investigated. ($Ti_{1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N showed single phase NaCl-structure up to X=0.87, while a mixed phase of NaCl Type (Ti, Al) N and wurtzite structure AlN was observed for 0.87$Ti_{1-x}$ $Al_{x}$ )N became by degrees as increasing X, which made the hardness of the coating higher by Al addition. When the coating was composed of a mixed phase, however, the hardness decreased abruptly due to the effect of soft AlN phase. The wear volume of the coatings could be obtained as the concentration of the coating was varied, and the relation between the wear volume and hardness or the adhesion strength was discussed.

  • Many of the current development in surface modification engineering are focused on multilayered coatings, which have the potential to improve the tribological properties. Four different multilayered coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel in this study. The prepared samples are designed as $WC-Ti_{0.6}Al_{0.4}N,\;WC-Ti_{0.53}Al_{0.47}N,\;WC-Ti_{0.5}Al_{0.5}N\;and\;WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$. The multilayered coatings were investigated with respect to coating surface and cross-sectional morphology, roughness, adhesion, hardness, porosity and tribological behaviors. Especially, wear tests of four multilayered coatings were performed by using a ball-on-disc configuration with a linear sliding speed of 0.017 m/sec and a normal load of 5.38 N load. The tests were carried out at room temperature in air by employing AISI 52100 steel ball $(H_R\;=\;66) $ having a diameter of 10 mm. The surface morphology, and topography of the wear scars of samples and balls have been determined by using scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). Also, wear mechanism was determined by using SEM coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results have showed an improved wear resistance of the $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$coatings with increasing of Al (aluminum) concentration.
