Experimental Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The grade 2 CP Ti was used to control. The alloys were cast into phosphate bonded $SiO_2$ investment molds using an argon-arc casting machine, and The hardness and microstructures of the castings were investigated in order to reveal their possible use for new dental casting materials and to collect useful data for alloy design. The hardness of the Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloy(379Hv) became higher than that of Ti-13%Zr(317Hv) alloy, and the hardness of this alloys became higher than that of CP Ti(247Hv). Increasing in the hardness of the Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloy was considered to be solid solution hardening as the Ti-Zr system shows a completely solid solution for both high temperature $\beta$phase and low temperature $\alpha$ phase and also the inclusion of the eutectoid structure($\alpha Ti+Ti_{2}Cu$). No martensitic structures are observed in the specimen made of CP Ti, but Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys show a kind of martensitic structure. Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu shows the finest microstructure. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for dental casting materials should be designed as Ti-Zr-Cu based alloys.
Electrochemical characteristics of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys coated with HA/TiN by using magnetron sputtering method were studied. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(3, 7, 10 and 15wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating, and then coated with HA/TiN, respectively, by using DC and RF-magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by using optical microscope(OM), field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (-1,500 mV~ + 2,000 mV) and A.C. impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz ~ 10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed needle-like structure. In case of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, a-peak was increased with increasing Zr content. The thickness of TiN and HA coated layer showed 400 nm and 100 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of HA/TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the non-coated Ti-30TaxZr alloys, whic hindicate better protective effect. The polarization resistance($R_p$) value of HA/TiN coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed $8.40{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$ which was higher than that of non-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.
The mechannical properties and corrosion resistance of alloy added commercially pure titanium for dental implants have been investigated. Ti, To-65Zr, Ti-10.1Ta and Ti-17Sn alloys were melthed in arc furnace and the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by anodic polarization test. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloy were analysed by optical micrograph. hardness tester and instron. In isothermal test, Ti-10.1Ta and Ti-17Sn alloys exhibited the best oxidation resistance below $1100^{\circ}C$. Ti65Zr, Ti-10.1Ta and Ti-17Sn alloys showed better rockwell hardness compared with commercially pure. Ti As the result of the anodic polarization test in 5%HCl, it 5%HCl, it was known knows that Ti-65Zr, alloy showed a rapid decrease in current density at higher potenial in comparision with other Ti alloys.
Experimental Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The grade 2 CP Ti was used to control. To investigate the surface reaction layers produced by the reaction with mold materials and the influence of the reaction layers on the hardness of castings, A phosphate bonded $SiO_2$ base investment was used as mold material, and microstructure observation and hardness test were performed. The surface reaction layers of Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were thinner than that of CP Ti had a clearly multiple structure. A difference of the hardness between surface and inner of the Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys became less than that of CP Ti. From the results, it was found that the Ti-Zr-(Cu) based alloys were possible to cast with $SiO_2$ base investment without the great changes of mechanical properties of the castings.
Pure titanium and its alloys are drastically used in implant materials due to their excellent mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. However, the widely used Ti-6Al-4V is found to release toxic ions (Al and V) into the body, leading to undesirable long-term effects. Ti-6Al-4V has much higher elastic modulus than cortical bone. Therefore, titanium alloys with low elastic modulus have been developed as biomaterials to minimize stress shielding. For this reason, Ti-30Ta-xZr alloy systems have been studied in this study. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(5, 10 and 15 wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and Ti coating and then coated with TiN, respectively, by using DC magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface were carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (- 1500 mV~+ 2000 mV) and AC impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz~10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The equiaxed structure was changed to needle-like structure with increasing Zr content. The surface defects and structures were covered with TiN/Ti coated layer. From the polarization behavior in 0.9% NaCl solution, The corrosion current density of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys decreased as Zr content increased, whereas, the corrosion potential of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys increased as Zr content increased. The corrosion resistance of TiN/Ti-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys. From the AC impedance in 0.9% NaCl solution, polarization resistance($R_p$) value of TiN/Ti coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed higher than that of TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.
Purpose: The grindability of binary Ti-X%Zr(X=10,20,40) alloys in order to develop a Ti alloy with better machinability than unalloyed titanium has been evaluated. Methods: Experimental Ti-Zr alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. Slabs of experimental alloys were ground using a SiC abrasive wheel on an electric handpiece at circumferential speeds(12000,18000,25000 or 30000rpm) by applying a force(200gr). Grinding rate was evaluated by measuring the amount of metal volume removed after grinding for 1 minute and the volume ratio of metal removed compared to the wheel material lost, which was calculated from the diameter loss (grinding ratio). Experimental datas were compared to those for cp Ti(commercially pure titanium) and Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy were used controls. Results: It was observed that the grindability of Ti-Zr alloys increased with an increase in the Zr concentration. More, they are higher than cp Ti, particularly the Ti-20%Zr alloy exhibited the highest grindability at all circumferential speeds. There was significant difference in the grinding rate and grinding ratio between Ti-20%Zr alloy and cp Ti at any speed(p<0.05). Conclusion: By alloying with Zr, the Ti exhibited better grindability at all circumferential speeds. the Ti-20%Zr alloy has a great potential for use as a dental machining alloy.
The poisoning effect of Zr in aluminum alloys was investigated by analyzing the filtered cakes of aluminum alloy melt taken with the $Prefil^{(R)}$ footprinter through a variety of analytic instruments, SEM/EDX, Auger, and TEM. Experimental results indicated that the morphology and chemical composition of the aluminum alloys were not modified with the addition of Zr, which is to previous belief that Zr poisoning is caused by modification of $(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)Al_3$. On the other hand, $TiAl_3$ surroundig $TiB_2$ particles was modified and its lattice parameter was more mismatched by increasing Zr content, leading to less nucleation rate. This is also supported by the observation that the poisoning effect is reduced when Ti is added, resulting in a lower content ratio of Zr to Ti. These results suggest that extra Ti should be added to eliminate the poisoning effect of Zr in aluminum alloys containing Zr.
Purpose: The grindability of Ti-10%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,1,3) alloys in order to develop Ti alloys for dental applications with better machinability than unalloyed titanium has been evaluated. Methods: Experimental Ti-10%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,1,3) alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. Slabs of experimental alloys were ground using a SiC abrasive wheel on an electric handpiece at one of the four rotational speeds of the wheel (12000, 18000, 25000 or 30000rpm) by applying a force(100gf). Grindability was evaluated by measuring the amount of metal volume removed per minute(grinding rate) and the volume ratio of metal removed compared to the wheel material lost, which was calculated from the diameter loss (grinding ratio). Experimental datas were compared the results with those of cp-Ti(commercially pure titanium) Results: It was observed that the grindability of Ti-10%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,1,3) alloys increased with an increase in the Cr concentration. More, they are higher than cp-Ti, particularly the Ti-10%Zr-3%Cr alloy exhibited the highest grindability at all rotational speeds except 12000rpm. There was significant difference in the grinding rate and grinding ratio between Ti-10%Zr-3%Cr alloy and cp-Ti at all rotational speeds(p<0.05). Conclusion: The Ti-10%Zr-3%Cr alloy exhibited better grindability at high rotational speeds, great potential for use as a dental machining alloy.
Ti-20%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,5) based alloys not containing hamful Al and V were newly designed in order to reveal their possibility for dental casting alloys, and melted in argon-arc casting machine. The mechanical properties were evaluated by using universal testing machine. The tensile strength and %elongaton of the alloys markedly increased with Cr content. The Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy showed a similar tendency with Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy in tensile strength, but surpassed in %elongation. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for successful dental casting materials should be designed as Ti-Zr-Cr based alloys.
Ti and Ti alloys have been extensively used in the medical and dental fields because of their good corrosion resistance, high strength to density ratio and especially, their low elastic modulus compared to other metallic materials. Recent trends in biomaterials research have focused on development of metallic alloys with elastic modulus similar to natural bone, however, many candidate materials also contain toxic elements that would be biologically harmful. In this study, new Ti based alloys which do not contain the toxic metallic components were developed using a theoretical method (DV-$X{\alpha}$). In addition, alloys were developed with improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Ternary Ti-Ag-Zr alloys consisting of biocompatible alloying elements were produced to investigate the alloying effect on microstructure, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The effects of various contents of Zr on the mechanical properties and biocompatibility were compared. The alloys exhibited higher strength and corrosion resistance than pure Ti, had antibacterial properties, and were not observed to be cytotoxic. Of the designed alloys' mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the Ti-3Ag-0.5Zr alloy had the best results.
