Ti-6Al-4V합금의 미세조직에 따른 초고속 변형특성 (Effect of Microstructures on the Deformation Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy at Ultra High Strain rate)

  • In this study, the effect of $\alpha$-phase morphology on the dynamic deformation behavior at ultra high strain rate was investigated by EBW(Explosive Bridge Wire) test. All of tests and analyses were conducted on three typical microstructures of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, i.e. equiaxed, widmanstatten and bimodal microstructures. The spall strength and HEL(Hugoniot Elastic Limit) of the specimens that have the thickness of 2mm and 4mm were highest with the bimodal microstructure. These results were similar with previous study which was performed by dynamic torsion test(Kolsky torsion test).

Advanced Powder Processing Techniques of Ti Alloy Powders for Medical and Aerospace Applications

  • In this paper, two kinds of advanced powder processing techniques Metal Injection Molding (MIM) and Direct Laser Forming (DLF) are introduced to fabricate complex shaped Ti alloy parts which are widely used for medical and aerospace applications. The MIM process is used to strengthen Ti-6Al-4V alloy compacts by addition of fine Mo, Fe or Cr powders. Enhanced tensile strength of 1030 MPa with 15.1% elongation was obtained by an addition of 4 mass%Cr because of the microstructural modification and also the solution strengthening in beta phase. However, their fatigue strength was lower compared to wrought materials, but was improved by HIP. Subsequently, the effect of feeding layer height (FLH) on the characteristics of the DLF compacts was investigated. In the case of 100 ${\mu}m$ FLH, surface roughness was improved and nearly full density (99.8%) was obtained. Also, tensile strength of 1080 MPa was obtained, which is higher than the ASTM value.

  • High Temperature deformation behavior of newly developed beta-gamma TiAl alloy was investigated in this study. The optimum processing condition was investigated with the aid of Dynamic Materials Model (DMM). Processing maps representing the efficiency of power dissipation for microstructural evolution and instability were constructed utilizing the results of hot compression test at temperatures ranging from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate ranging from $10^{-4}/s$ to $10^2/s$. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) simulation was adopted to consider the deformation heating. With the help of processing map and microstructural analysis, the optimum processing condition was presented and the role of $\beta$ phase was also discussed in this study.

  • The application of TEM in investigating the evolution of microstructure during solid phase crystallization of the amorphous Si, $Si_{1-x}Ge_x,\;and\;Si_{1-x}Ge_x/Si$ films deposited on $SiO_2$ substrate, in identifying the failure mechanism of the TiN barrier layer in the Cu-metallization scheme, and in comparing the microstructure of the as-deposited Cu-Cr and Cu-Ti alloy films are discussed. First, it is identified that the evolution of microstructure in Si and $Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ alloy films strongly depends on the concentration of Ge in the film. Second, the failure mechanism of the TiN diffusion barrier in the Cu-metallization is the migration of the Cu into the Si substrate, which results in the formation of a dislocation along the Si {111} plane and precipitates (presumably $Cu_{3}Si$) around the dislocation. Finally, the microstructure of the as-deposited Cu-Cr and Cu-Ti alloy films is also quite different in these two cases. From these several cases, we demonstrate that the information which we obtained using TEM is critical in understanding the behavior of materials.

  • A modified Mukerjee's model considering the microstructural evolution was developed to study the superplastic bulge forming process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Through the microstructual observation after deformation, it was found that the grain growth rate of uniaxially tested specimens was different from that of biaxially deformed specimens. From this result, bulge forming experiments with and without back pressure were performed to examine the grain growth behavior and to compare the results of biaxial test with those of triaxial test. Good agreement between the prediction by a modified Mukerjee's model and the experimental measurements was obtained for bulge profile and thickness distribution.

Spark plasma sintering에 의한 Ti-6Al-4V 합금분말의 성형성 (Consolidation Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Powder by Spark Plasma Sintering)

  • Using spark plasma sintering process (SPS), Ti-6Al-4V alloy powders were successfully consolidated without any contamination happened due to reaction between the alloy powders and graphite mold. Variation of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated as a function of SPS temperature and time. Compared with hot isostatic pressing (HIP), the sintering time and temperature could be lowered to be 10 min. and $900^{\circ}C$, respectively. At the SPS condition, UTS and elongation were about 890 MPa and 24%, respectively. Considering the density of 98.5% and elongation of 24%, further improving the tensile strength would obtain by increasing the SPS pressure.

  • Internally nitrided dilute W-Ti alloy specimens having a heavily deformed surface microstructure were prepared by a multi-step internal nitriding at 1573-2073 K. Primary nitriding below their recrystallization temperature induced a precipitation of ultrafine TiN particles. After secondary and tertiary nitriding, those precipitates grew into rod-like TiN with a length of 20-60 nm. The recrystallization temperature after nitriding was elevated above 2073 K. The yield strength at 1773 K obtained from nitrided W-0.5 mass% Ti alloy was about 5 times as large as that of the recrystallized specimen. DBTT of the nitrided alloys was about 373 K.

  • Nanotube morphology change of Ti-Ta-Zr alloy as Zr content increase has been researched using various experimental methods. Ti-Ta-Zr(3, 7 and 15 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and nano-structure controlled for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Formation of oxide nanotubes are conducted by anodizing a Ti-Ta-Zr alloy in $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes with small amounts of fluoride ions at room temperature. Electrochemical experiments were carried out with conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. The samples were embedded with epoxy resin, leaving a square surface area of $10mm^2$ exposed to the anodizing electrolyte, 1.0M $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.8wt% NaF.

Ti-6AI-4V 합금의 ECAP 가공에 따른 미세조직의 변화 (Microstructural Evolution during the Equal Channel Angular Pressing of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy)

  • The microstructural evolution during the equal channel angular pressing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ECA pressing was carried out isothermally with route C at $600^{\circ}C$ for two types of initial microstructure, i.e., equiaxed and Widmanstatten microstructures. At an initial stage of ECA pressing, the equiaxed microstructure showed more uniform flow than the Widmanstatten microstructure. However, both microstructures were significantly refined revealing nearly equiaxed grains of 0.3$mu extrm{m}$ in diameter with high angle grain boundaries after 4 passes of ECA pressing. These ultrafine gains were found to be stable with little grain growth, when annealed up to $600^{\circ}C$ for 1hr.

Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of two metallic phase magnet Co/Co$_2$TiSn films

  • The magneto-optical properties of Co/Co$_2$TiSn two-phase magnet films were studied. These films show that relatively large Kerr rotations which are -0.4 deg. at the wavelength of 400 nm, compared to that of pure Co. It is conceivable that the magneto-optical effects may be due to both contributions of ferromagnetic Co matrix and ferromagnetic Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate. The perpendicular magnetization curve domonstrates a typical bubble domain hysteresis loop. the saturation magnetization change of the annealed film is less sensitive to temperature in the low temperature region and the Curie temperature of Co$_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitate is a little higher in the annealed film. These can be explained by the increase of the number of Co-Co exchange interaction in Heusler alloy structure resulting from the change of chemical ordering by annealing.
