Photoelectrochemical and Hydrogen Production Characteristics of CdS-TiO2 Nanocomposite Photocatalysts Synthesized in Organic Solvent (유기용매상에서 제조된 수소제조용 CdS-TiO2 나노복합 광촉매의 특성 연구)

  • CdS-$TiO_2$ nano-composite sol was prepared by the sol-gel method in organic solvents at room temperature and further hydrothermal treatment at various temperatures to control the physical properties of the primary particles. Again, CdS-$TiO_2$ composite particulate films were made by casting CdS-$TiO_2$ sols onto $F:SnO_2$ conducting glass and then heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$. Physical properties of these 61ms were further controlled by the surface treatment with $TiCl_4$, aqueous solution. The photo currents and hydrogen production rates measured under the experimental conditions varied according to the $CdS/[CdS+TiO_2]$ mole ratio and the mixed-sol preparation method. For $CdS-TiO_2$ composite sols prepared in IPA, CdS particles were homogeneously surrounded by $TiO_2$ particles. Also, the surface treatment with $TiCl_4$ aqueous solution caused a considerable improvement in the photocatalytic activity, probably as a result of close contacts between the primary particles by the etching effect of $TiCl_4$. It was found that the photoelectrochemical performance of these particulate films could be effectively enhanced by this approach.

  • In order to develop a new line injection system for spin draw yarn (FD SDY) fibers, the effect of various parameters in extrusion and melt line conditions on the dispersion and distribution of $TiO_2$ particles within FD PET fibers was investigated. As a result, the dispersibility of $TiO_2$ particles in a PET matrix is found to depend on the particle size and its surface characteristics. Surface modification of $TiO_2$ by dimethyl polysiloxane resulted in the improved dispersibility and affinity of $TiO_2$ particles in the PET matrix. Especially, residence time, mixing temperature, and mixing shear rate in the new line injection system under the SDY spinning process were very important parameters to minimize the agglomeration of $TiO_2$ particles. The FD SDY prepared by the new line injection system was superior to those using the polymerization process and the conventional masterbatch chip dosing process in the color-L and color-b values of the fibers.

Solid Solution Phenomena of Al+Al3Ti Alloy and Al+10wt.%Ti Alloy using Mechanical Alloying Process (기계적 합금화법에 의해 제조된 Al+Al3Ti합금 및 Al+10wt.%Ti합금의 고용현상)

  • The solubility of Ti in Al matrix was determined by X-ray diffraction method on two different mechanical alloying systems, i.e Al+$Al_3Ti$ and Al+Ti alloys. Starting powder compositions of two systems were chosen for final volume fraction of $Al_3Ti$ phase being 25%. The solubility of Ti in ${\alpha}$-Al was estimated by the lattice parameter measurement of Al. For Al+$Al_3Ti$ mixture, it appeared that some of $Al_3Ti$ particles decomposed during milling and maximum solubility of Ti in Al was about 0.99%. The majority of $Al_3Ti$ particles were dispersed uniformly in Al matrix, having approximate size of 100~200 nm. On the other hand, higher Ti solubility of 1.24 wt.% was found in Al+Ti system, with starting composition of Al+10 wt.%Ti. After 15 hours of milling, Ti phase was identified as 20 nm sized particles embedded in Al matrix. The annealing of mechanically alloyed powders from Al+$Al_3Ti$ and Al+10 wt.%Ti systems was followed in the temperature range of 200 to $600^{\circ}C$ to study thermal stability of supersaturated solution of Al(Ti). After annealing, the lattice parameter of Al reverted back to that of pure Al, and the peak intensity ratio of $Al_3Ti$/Al was increased more than the original value before annealing. These results suggest that Ti dissolve into alpha-Al solutions during milling, and by annealing, $Do_{22}-Al_3Ti$ phase forms from Al(Ti) solution.

Fabrication of $TiO_2$ Electrode Containing Scattering Particles in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (산란 입자를 포함하는 염료감응 태양전지용 $TiO_2$ 전극 제조)

  • The energy conversion efficiency of DSSCs (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells) is dependent on the powder size, the structure, and the morphology of $TiO_2$ electrode. The higher efficiency is obtained with high surface area of the nanoanatase-$TiO_2$ powder adsorbed onto a lot more of the dye. Also, the enhancement of light scattering increases the efficiency with high adsorption of the dye. Powder size, crystalline phase, and shape of $TiO_2$ obtained by hydrothermal method have 15-20 nm, anatase and round. $TiO_2$ electrode has fabricated with the mixture of scattering $TiO_2$ particle with 0.4 ${\mu}m$ in nano-sized powder. Conversion efficiency of series of DSSCs was measured with volume fraction of scattering particle. Photovoltaic characteristics of DSSCs with 10% scattering particles are 3.51 mA for Jsc (short circuit current), 0.79 V for Voc(open circuit potential), filling factor 0.619 and 6.86% for efficiency. Jsc was improved by 11% and enhancement of efficiency by 0.77% compared with that of no scattering particles. The confinement of inserted light by light scattering particles has more increase of the injection of exiton(electron-hole pair) and decrease of moving path in electron. Efficiencies of DSSCs with more than 10% for scattering particles have reduced with increasing the pore in the $TiO_2$ electrode.

  • An electrophoretic display using $TiO_2$ particles is the most promising candidate because it offers various advantages such as ink-on-paper appearance, good contrast ratio, wide viewing angle, image stability in the off-state and extremely low power consumption. The core technology of electrophoretic display is the dispersion controlling of $TiO_2$ nano particles in nonaqueous solution. To prepare an ink for electronic paper using electrophoretic properties of $TiO_2$ nano particles, cyclohexane with low dielectric constant and transparency, polyethylene for producing polymer coating layer which reduces apparent gravity of $TiO_2$, and $TiO_2$ powders were mixed together by planetary-mill. The zeta-potential value of $TiO_2$ particles in cyclohexane was measured about -40mV, but was measured over -110mV by dispersant attached to polyethylene-coated $TiO_2$ surface. Prepared electronic ink was filled in cross patterned micro-wall with $200{\mu}m$ in width and $40{\mu}m$ in height on ITO glass designed by photolithography. The response time of electronic paper evaluated by mobility of $TiO_2$ particle between micro-walls was measured 0.067sec, but the drift velocity from reflectance wave form during reverse from of electronic ink was measured 0.07cm/sec.

Synthesis of High purity $TiO_2$ Powder from Elemental Titanium Particles (금속티타늄 분말로부터 고순도 $TiO_2$ 미분말 합성)

  • In order to obtian TiO2 fine powder of high purity, the new method which is different from the sulfate process and the chloride one was employed. TiO2 was syntehsized by the reaction between elemental titanium particles and H2O2 solutiosn at 30~7$0^{\circ}C$, and then TiO2 powder was characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, DTA and FT-IR. It was found that the initial reaction rate was fast at a high temperature due to the high generation of activated oxygen associated with thedecomposition of H2O2. However, the reaction was slowly proceeded at a low temperature due to slow decomposition of H2O2. In this experimental range, the optimum temeprature was ocnsidered to be about 5$0^{\circ}C$. The primary particles of the hydrous titanium dioxide (TiO2 gel) before aging were spherical, and their mean sizes were about 50nm. The similar shapes and sizes were observed with calcinatin at 40$0^{\circ}C$. The FT-IR spectrum of Ti-OH in the TiO2 gel powder appeared at around 3380cm-1, 1630cm-1 and 530cm-1. This gel powder was crystallized into the anatase type TiO2 at 300~40$0^{\circ}C$.

  • A novel self-humidifying composite membrane for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at low humidity condition was developed. The $Pt/TiO_2 catalyst particles were synthesized via supercritical impregnation methods. Pt precursor was dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide and impregnated onto $TiO_2$ particles. Pt precursors were platinum(II) acetylacetonate, Dimethyl(1,5-cyclooctadiene) platinum(II) and we controlled the ratio of Pt to $TiO_2$ The impregnated Pt precursor was converted to $TiO_2$ supported Pt nanoparticle under various reducing conditions. $TiO_2$ catalyst particles were dispersed uniformly into the Nafion solution, and then $Pt/TiO_2/Nafion$composite membrane was prepared using solution-cast method. The size, dispersion and content of the platinum had been characterized with Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM), X-ray diffract ion (XRD) and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES). The cell performance with the self-humidifying composite membrane was compared with a recast Nafion membrane under both humidified and dry conditions at 65 $^{\circ}C$.

  • TiC-Ni and TiC-Ni-Mo cermet powders were produced by Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. The cooling rate of synthesized powders were controlled by using the V-shaped copper jig and the carbide size decreased with increasing the cooling rate I. e decreasing the width of copper jig Round shape carbide particles were produced after SHS reaction in TiC-Ni as well as TiC-Ni-Mo powders. Local segregation of Mo rich phases was observed in SHS powder of TiC-Ni-Mo and the uneven dis-triobution of Mo promoted the faster growth rate of carbide particles during sintering compared to the same composition specimen with commercial TiC powder. Howogeneous microstructure of TiC-Ni-Mo cermet was obtained when the elemental Mo powder was mixed with the SHS powder of TiC-Ni.

The Effects of TiN Particles on the HAZ Microstructure and Toughness in High Nitrogen TiN Steel

  • In the coarse grain HAZ adjacent to the fusion line, most of the TiN particles in conventional Ti added steel are dissolved and austenite grain growth is easily occurred during welding process. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particle is improved by increasing the nitrogen content in steel. In this study, the effect of hlgh nitrogen TiN particle on preventing austenite grain growth in HAZ was investigated. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing the austenite grain growth by pinning effect. High nitrogen TiN particle in simulated HAZ were not dissolved even at high temperature such as 1400'E and prevented the austenite grain growth in simulated HAZ. Owing to small austenite grain size in HAZ the width of coarse grain HAZ in high nitrogen TiN steel was decreased to 1/10 of conventional TiN steel. Even high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grain HAZ consisted of fine polygonal ferrite and pearlite and toughness of coarse grain HAZ was significantly improved.

Synthesis of Ultrafine TiC-15%Co Powder by Thermochemical Method (열화학적 방법에 의한 초미립 TiC-15%Co 분말의 합성)

  • Ultrafine TiC-15%Co powders were synthesized by a thermochemical process, including spray drying, calcination, and carbothermal reaction. Ti-Co oxide powders were prepared by spray drying of aqueous solution of titanium chloride and $Ti(OH)_2$ slurry, both containing cobalt nitrate, fellowed by calcination. The oxide powders were mixed with carbon powder to reduce and carburize at 1100~125$0^{\circ}C$ under argon or hydrogen atmosphere. Ultrafine TiC particles were formed by carbothermal reaction at 1200~125$0^{\circ}C$, which is significantly lower than the formation temperature (~1$700^{\circ}C$) of TiC particles prepared by conventional method. The oxygen content of TiC-15%Co powder synthesized under hydrogen atmosphere was lower than that synthesized under argon, suggesting that hydrogen accelerates the reduction rate of Ti-Co oxides. The size of TiC-15%Co powder was evaluated by FE-SEM and TEM and Identified to be smaller than 300 nm.
