Various ceramic particulate such as TiC, $TiB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ reinforced SUS431 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructures of the SUS431 composite were analyzed to determine manufacturability of composites. $Al_2O_3$-SUS431 composite had lots of defects due to poor wettability between the $Al_2O_3$ and steel matrix. On the other hand, TiC was uniformly dispersed in the SUS431 matrix than $TiB_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ due to good wettability and interfacial properties.

The commercial cermet cutting tools consist of multi-carbide and a binder metal of iron group, such as cobalt and nickel which are ferromagnetic. In this paper, a new approach to evaluate the mechanical properties of TiCN based cermet by magnetic properties were studied in relation to binder content and sintering conditions. The experimental cermet was prepared using commercial composition with the other binder contents by PM process. It was found that the magnetic properties of the sintered cermets remarkably depended on the microstructure and the total carbon content. The magnetic saturation was proportional to increment of coercive force. At high carbon content in sintered cermet, the magnetic saturation was increased by decreasing the concentration of solutes such as W, Mo, Ti in Co-Ni binder. As the coercive force increases, the hardness usually increases. The strength and toughness of the cermet also increased with increasing the magnetic saturation. The measurement of magnetic properties made it possible to evaluate the mechanical properties in the cermet cutting tools.

Hot ductility behavior of precipitation-hardened low-carbon iron alloys containing 0.02 wt% Ti and 0.05 wt% Nb was characterized by a hot tensile stress test. Carbon (0.05, 0.1, 0.25 wt%) and boron (0.002 wt%) contents were varied to study the effect of precipitates on the high-temperature embrittlement of the alloys in the temperature range of $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. Ductility loss was observed at $700^{\circ}C$ for the tested alloys. The cause of the ductility loss was mainly attributed to the carbides and ferrite films formed at the grain boundaries during deformation. Although the carbon content tended to raise the total fraction of Nb (C, N), the precipitates were formed mostly in the grain interior as the precipitation temperature was raised above the deformation temperature by the high carbon content. Hence, carbon in excess suppressed the hot ductility loss. Meanwhile, boron addition improved the hot ductility of the alloys. The improvement is likely due to the boron atoms capturing carbon atoms and thus retarding the carbide formation.

Stainless steels stabilized with Ti or Nb are largely used in offshore and shipbuilding industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance. In this study, carbide stabilizers, Ti and Nb, were added to stainless steel 304 specimens with different concentrations(Ti: 0.26%, 0.71%, Nb: 0.29%, 0.46%, 0.71%), and their mechanical and electrochemical characteristics were evaluated. Micro-Vickers hardness testing was employed to characterize the mechanical characteristics with alloying elements. Electrochemical evaluation techniques including Tafel analysis, cyclic polarization experiment, galvanostatic experiment were utilized to compare the corrosion characteristics of the specimens. The result of hardness tests revealed that Nb containing specimens showed increasing hardness with increasing alloying contents while adding Ti had little effect on increase in hardness. In the case of electrochemical measurements, the electrochemical characteristics of the specimens were enhanced with increasing Nb contents while they were deteriorated with increasing Ti contents. As a result, different stabilizers and their contents may produce significant differences in electrochemical characteristics, and there such effect must be taken account of in development of stainless steels for marine environment.
In the present paper, the thermal deactivation characteristics of plate-type commercial $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ SCR catalyst were investigated. For this purpose, the plate-type catalyst was calcined at different temperatures ranging from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. Structural and morphological changes were characterized byXRD, specific surface area, porosity, SEM-EDS and also NOx conversion with ammonia according to the calcine temperature. The NOx conversion decreased with increasing calcine temperature, especially when the catalysts were calcined at temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$. This is because the crystal phase of $TiO_2$ changed from anatase to rutile, and the $TiO_2$ grain growth and $CaWO_4$ crystal phase were formed, which reduced the specific surface area and pore volume. In addition, $V_2O_5$, which is a catalytically active material, was sublimated or vaporized over $700^{\circ}C$, and a metal mesh used as a support of the catalyst occurred intergranular corrosion and oxidation due to the formation of Cr carbide.
Diamond thin films were deposited on silicon, molybdebum, titanum and tugsten substrates, and were chlwntnizen using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy. From the result of experiment in various deposition periods, it was found that found that were nucleated and grown on interlayed carbide layers, which were formed on refractory metal substrates at the initial stage of.
In this study, recrystallization behaviors in the two-phase (${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) region of micro-alloyed steels such as Base, Nb, TiNbV and CAlN were investigated in terms of flow stress, microstructure and associated grain boundary characteristics. The flow stress of all specimens reached peak stress and gradually decreased, which means that recrystallization or recovery of proeutectoid deformed ferrite and recovery or transformation to ferrite of deformed austenite occurred by thermal activation. The precipitation of carbide or nitride via the addition of micro-alloying elements, because it reduced prior austenite grain size upon austenitization, promoted transformation of austenite to ferrite and increased flow stress. The strain-induced precipitation under deformation in the two-phase region, on the other hand, increased the flow stress when the micro-alloying elements were dissolved during austenitization. The recrystallization of the Nb specimen was more effectively retarded than that of the TiNbV specimen during deformation in the two-phase region.
Electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests are used to evaluate the degree of sensitization (DOS) of stainless steels and nickel base alloys. The validity of EPR test to detect DOS of these alloys, however, depends all the electrolyte composition employed. The existence of precipitates such as NbC, and TiC, etc. in the alloys also affects the reactivation behaviors of these alloys. In this investigation, the reactions involved during EPR processes are analyzed. In 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$+ 0.01 M KSCN electrolyte, a reactivation peak associated with the localized attack around NbC, different from that of intergranular corrosion, is observed for the solution annealed 347 SS. For solution annealed Alloy 600, matrix corrosion and localized attack around TiC with distinct anodic peaks appeared in the EPR curves are seen in the $H_2SO_4$+ KSCN electrolyte. With proper adjustment of elect rolyte composition, the contribution from intergranular corrosion, as a result of chromium carbide precipitation along the grain boundaries, can be distingui shed from the matrix and localized corrosion for the sensitized Alloy 600.

The characteristics of tool wear and the machinability in cutting of GFRP have been studied. The wear behavior of carbide insert tools(P20, M10, K10) and Cermet in TiC grade was studied by turning of changing the cutting condition. Machinability could be estimated as the following empirical formula, CT$^{n}$ =W The main results obtained are as follows: (1) Dependence of rate of tool wear on cutting speed; with increases of cutting speed, the rate of tool wear initially increases gradually(1st range), then it increases proportionally to cutting speed(2nd range), and finally the rate is constant(3rd range). (2) When the contact length has a main, effect on tool wear, the cutting speed does nit affect the tool wear. On the contrary, the cutting speed has a main effect on tool wear, the contact length does not affect the tool wear. (3) The order of machinability is K10, M10, P20 and Cermet in TiC grade.
In this study, we prepared a sample of AISI 409L weld metals using automotive exhaust manifolds and evaluated their corrosion properties by conducting an anodic polarization test after 10 minute of heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$. The specimens of AISI 409L transformed fully ferrite. Weld metal was refined more than base metal. Specimen of heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ and as weld specimen was formed precipitation. However heat treatment specimen was bulkly formed and coarser than the as weld specimen. The strength measured by 10 Hv highly at heat treatment specimens in comparison with as weld. The increase in strength is attributed to the precipitation of Ti. The result of heat treatment suggest that there was a decrease of current density and high corrosion potential. Following heat treatment process produced Ti precipitation and for this reason, it can restrain Cr-carbide so that steel will have more corrosion resistance.
