WC-TiC-TaC binderless cemented carbide was oxidized under low partial pressure of oxygen (50ppm) at 873K for 1 to 20 h. Surface roughness was measured using atomic force microscope, and effect of TiC amount on oxidation behavior of the carbide was investigated. WC phase was oxidized more easily than WC-TiC-TaC solid solution phase. With an increase in TiC amount, WC-TiC-TaC phase increased and the oxidation resistance of the carbide increased.
The austenitic STS 304 stainless steel was turned to clarify the effects of tool geometry on the tool wear. The wear of TiN-TiCN-TiC-TiAlN coated tungsten carbide tool was the smallest, exhibiting larger wear in the order of Si-Al-O-N ceramic, TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiN-TiCN-TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiC-TiN cermet and M20 tungsten carbide tools at the same cutting conditions. The S-type tool of M20 with large approach angle showed the longest tool life of all tools used in this tests due to preventing the groove wear of the side cutting edge. The wear of the S-type tool with the rake angle of 15$^{\circ}$became smaller than with that of -5$^{\circ}$, but the tool with the nose radius of 0.8mm did not perform much better with increasing the rake angle.

(Ti.W)C complex carbide was synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) chemical furnace. Attempt to find the optimal condition for synthesis of (Ti.W)C the effects of molar ratio of Ti:W:C on the synthesized powders and mechanical properties were investigated, Optimum molar ratio of these synthe-sized powder was Ti:W:C=0.7:0.2:1.0 The bulk density M,O.R Hardness Fracture toughness of (Ti.W)C complex carbide sintered at 200$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min by hot-pressing under the pressure of 20 MPa were 7.6g/cm3, 475 MPa, 17,.7 GPa respectively.
Toughening mechanism of boron carbide ceramics by the addition of titanium boride was investigated. Speci-men was prepared by hot pressing of boron carbide with upto 30vol% of titanium boride particulates. Toughness of boron carbide ceramics was increased from 4.7 MPa m1/2 to 6.3 MPa m1/2 with 15 vol% TiB2 addition. But further increase of TiB2 content results in slow decrease of toughness. From microstructure evaluation and crack propagation behavior it is concluded that the major toughening mechanism is crack deflection pheno-mena.

Magnetron sputtered TiN, (Ti, Al)N and TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coatings grown on cemented carbide substrates have been characterized by using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), nanoindentation, scratcher and cutting tests. Results show that TiN coating is bell mouth columnar structures, (Ti, Al)N coating is straight columnar structures and the modulation structure has been formed in the TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating. TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating exhibited higher hardness, better adhesion with substrate and excellent cutting performance compared with TiN and (Ti, Al)N coating.
TiC-Ni and TiC-Ni-Mo cermet powders were produced by Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. The cooling rate of synthesized powders were controlled by using the V-shaped copper jig and the carbide size decreased with increasing the cooling rate I. e decreasing the width of copper jig Round shape carbide particles were produced after SHS reaction in TiC-Ni as well as TiC-Ni-Mo powders. Local segregation of Mo rich phases was observed in SHS powder of TiC-Ni-Mo and the uneven dis-triobution of Mo promoted the faster growth rate of carbide particles during sintering compared to the same composition specimen with commercial TiC powder. Howogeneous microstructure of TiC-Ni-Mo cermet was obtained when the elemental Mo powder was mixed with the SHS powder of TiC-Ni.
Investigations have been made in order to improve the toughness of TiC coated Cemented Carbide tools by CVD. The effects of coating parameters on TiC layer and eta phase and the effects of the thickness of TiC Coated layer and eta phase on TRS were studied.
The effect of carbon addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallic alloys have been characterized. It is shown that carbon is not only an efficient solid solution strengthener in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl, it is also an efficient precipitation strengthener by fine dispersion of carbide. Transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the particle-dislocation interactions in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallics containing various types of fine precipitates. In an $L1_2$-ordered $Ni_3Al$ alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2~3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ type carbide, which has the cube-cube orientation relationship with the matrix, appear during aging. Typical Orowan loops are formed in $Ni_3Al$ containing fine dispersions of $M_{23}C_6$ particles. In the L10-ordered TiAl containing 0.1~2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$ matrix, appear in the matrix and preferentially at dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns analyses have shown that the needle-shaped precipitate is $Ti_3AlC$ of perovskite type. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_3AlC$ and the $L1_0$ matrix is found to be $(001)_{Ti3AlC}//(001)_{L10\;matrix}$ and $[010]_{Ti3AlC}//[010]_{L10\;matrix}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer period at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlC$ with a hexagonal structure are formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$ matrix. The orientation relationship between the $(0001)_{Ti2AlC}//(111)_{L10\;matrix}$ is and $[1120]_{Ti2AlC}//[101]_{L10\;matrix}$. High temperature strength of TiAl increases appreciably by the precipitation of fine carbide. Dislocations bypass the carbide needles at further higher temperatures.
The effects of the simultaneous variations of the ratio of feed gases(H2/N2 Flow ratio), feed gas flow rate (H2/N2, total-flow rate) and partial pressures of TiCl4 (PTiCl41) as well as deposition time and cobalt content of the substrate on the deposition rate of the TiN Coated Cemented Tungsten Carbide Tools were investigated. Deposition was carried out in the temperature range of 930$^{\circ}C$-1080$^{\circ}C$ and an activation energy of 46.5 Kcal/mole can be calculated. Transverse rupture strength was noticeably reduced by the TiN coating on the virgin surfa-ce of Cemented Tungsten Carbide, the extent of which was decreased according to the coa-ting thickness. Microhardness value observed on the work was in the range of 1700∼2000kg/mm, which were in well agreement with the value of bult TiN. The wear resistance of TiN layers was performed by turning test and it was observed that crater and flank resistance remarkably enhanced by TiN coating.
