Fabrication of High Speed Optical Matrix Wwitch by Ti:Ti:LiNbO3 (Ti:Ti:LiNbO3를 이용한 초고속 광 매트릭스 스위치 제조)

  • To realize channel cross-connecting in optical communications systems, a high speed optical matrix switch was fabricated using z-cut $LiNbO_3$. For switch fabrication was design bending structure and coupling length and four $2{\times}2$ directional couplers were integrated on one substrate far construction of a $4{\times}4$ switch. Single-mode optical waveguides were formed by Ti-diffusion at a wet $O_2$ atmosphere. Ti-diffusion profile, refractive index variation and waveguide morphology were analyzed by Prism coupler and optical microscopy, respectively.

  • A Mach-Zehnder type $Ti:LiNbO_3$ optical modulator with a grooved $SiO_2$ buffer layer, was evaluated in terms of an electrode structure. The finite element method was performed to find out the optinum design parameters of electrodes. characteristic impedance ($Z_o$), MW effective index ($N_{eff}$) and attenuation constant ($a_o$)of fabricated traveling-wave electrodes were measured and compared with those obtained by the simulation expectation. For an optical modulator with 11${\mu}m$thick electrodes and a grooved $SiO_2$ buffer layer, the 3dB bandwidth based on the RF measurement results turned out to be 18GHz.

  • A fabrication process of periodic electric field assisted poling of Ti-diffused channel waveguides in LiNbO3 (Ti:PPLN) has been developed and improved using a periodic 180o phase inversion along the z-axis. The zig for poling inversion and the Labview program of charge control have been devised. Pulse high voltage and duty cycle were adjusted based on the estimated charge required for poling inversion. Monitoring the change of leakage current under applied voltage less than the coercive voltage also minimized a breakdown.

Low Temperature Sintering and Microwave Dielectric Properties of Ca[Ti1-x(Ni1/3Nb2/3)x]O3 Ceramics (Ca[Ti1-x(Ni1/3Nb2/3)x]O3 세라믹스의 저온소결 및 마이크로파 유전특성)

  • The microwave dielectric properties and low temperature sintering of $Ca[Ti_{1-x}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_x]O_3$ system were investigated at the sintering temperature $1,200\~1,350^{\circ}C$. The density and quality factors $(Q{\times}f)$ increased while dielectric constants slightly decreased with the decrease of Ti. The dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of resonance frequency $(\tau_f)$ were 64, 17,000 GHz, and $-9.1\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ respectively, when $CaTi_{1/2}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1/2}O_3$ ceramics were sintered at $1,300^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. $2Li_2O-B_2O_3$ was added to $CaTi_{1/2}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1/2}O_3$ to decrease the sintering temperature for LTCC application. The microwave dielectric properties of the samples sintered at $925^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with the addition of $6\;wt\%\;2Li_2O-B_2O_3$ were $\varepsilon_r=48.7,\;Q{\times}f=8,460\;GHz$, and $\tau_f=+5.6ppm/^{\circ}C$. Compatibility test of the composition with silver electrode shows no reaction with silver electrode, implying the feasibility as a high-K LTCC material.

  • Seven kinds of most representative photorefractive crystals expected to contribute to the realization of the volume holographic storage were reviewed The growth conditions and problems for highly homogeneous optical qualities of the following crystals depending on the growth methods were discussed;(1) $LiNbO_3$ and $Bi_2SiO_{20}$ by Czochralski method (2) $Bi_{12}TiO_{20}$, $KNbO_3$ and $BaTiO_3$ by top seeded solution growth and (3) $(Sr_{1-x}Ba_{x})Nb_{2}O_{6}$ and $(K_{1-y}Na_y)_{2A-2}(Sr_{1-x}Ba_x)_{2-A}Nb_2O_6$ by Stepanov method, And then the figure of merits for the estimation of phororefractive materials on performances, such as $Q_1$, $Q_2$ and sensitivity, were discussed.

  • Ti:LiNbO$_3$optical waveguides were fabricated as a function of Ti thickness and pigtailed with polarization maintaining fiber(PMF). The near field patterns and total insertion loss of these sample was showed and measured for optical wavelength 1550nm. The fiber-to-waveguide coupling loss was described also .

Phase Transition Study on Ilmenite under High Pressure and Temperature (고온-고압하에서 티탄철석에 대한 상면이 연구)

  • high pressure and temperature conditions. However, those results are not consistent with one another, and phase boundary between ilmenite and perovskite phases determined only from the quenching method may be not so reliable at all. Therefore, in-situ high pressure-temperature (hP-T) X-ray diffraction measurements were performed up to 19 GPa and $700^{\circ}C$ in a large volume press apparatus using synchrotron radiation. Experimental results show that perovskite phase is stable at pressures above 16 GPa, and transforms back to $LiNbO_3$phase near 15 CPa at room temperature, and that the perovskite-ilmenite transition is back and forth near 15 CPa at $500^{\circ}C$. LiNbO$_3$phase transforms to ilmenite at 13 CPa and $300^{\circ}C$ and at 10.8 CPa and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. These data indicate that $LiNbO_3$phase may have a stability region in the hP-T phase diagram and that the perovskite-ilmenite phase boundary would be quite different from that previously reported.

The Pigrailing and The Loss Analysis of low loss LiNbO$_3$ Optical Waveguide with Fiber-to-fiber Insetion Loss<6dB (Total Fiber-to-fiber Insertion Loss가 <6dB 인 Ti:$LiNbO_3$ 과도파로 Pigtailing 및 손실분석)

  • A low loss x-cut $LiNbO_3$optical waveguide was fabricated by Yi in-diffusion, and the properties of guided-mode and the total insertion loss of the pigtailed waveguide with polarization maintaining fiber(PMF) were measured at optical wavelength 1550nm. for forming the waveguides, the parameters of diffusion, Ti thickness, waveguide line-width, length, diffusion temperature, time and atmosphere were set $1400{\AA}$, $8{\mu}m$, 3.3cm, $1050^{\circ}C$, 8 hours and wet bubbled oxygen, respectively. And then after the polishing and piatailing, it showed that the total insertion loss was -4.1dB for TM mode, -5.5dB for TE mode, and mode size, that is, the horizontal/ vertical size were $13.8{\mu}m/18{\mu}m$ for TM mode, $9.6{\mu}m/6.5{\mu}m$ for TE mode.
