Self-adaptive and Bidirectional Dynamic Subset Selection Algorithm for Digital Image Correlation

  • The selection of subset size is of great importance to the accuracy of digital image correlation (DIC). In the traditional DIC, a constant subset size is used for computing the entire image, which overlooks the differences among local speckle patterns of the image. Besides, it is very laborious to find the optimal global subset size of a speckle image. In this paper, a self-adaptive and bidirectional dynamic subset selection (SBDSS) algorithm is proposed to make the subset sizes vary according to their local speckle patterns, which ensures that every subset size is suitable and optimal. The sum of subset intensity variation (${\eta}$) is defined as the assessment criterion to quantify the subset information. Both the threshold and initial guess of subset size in the SBDSS algorithm are self-adaptive to different images. To analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, both numerical and laboratory experiments were performed. In the numerical experiments, images with different speckle distribution, different deformation and noise were calculated by both the traditional DIC and the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher accuracy than the traditional DIC. Laboratory experiments performed on a substrate also demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in selecting appropriate subset size for each point.

  • There is an immense need to obtain nanometric surface finish on optical glass owing to the advantage of improved performance of the components. But owing to brittleness and hardness, optical glass is one of the materials that is difficult to ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile mode machining, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo a transition from brittle to ductile machining region below a critical undeformed chip thickness. Below this threshold, it is suggested that the energy required for plastic formation. Thus, plastic deformation is the predominant mechanism of material removal in machining these materials in this mode. An experimental study is conducted diamond cutting for machining BK7 glass. The investigation presents the feasibility of achieving nanometric surface and the understanding the mechanism of cutting glass, proving the cutting edge radius effect.

  • Nondestructive damage sensing and mechanical properties for acid-treated carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE). Carbon black (CB) was used to compare to CNT and CNF. The results were compared to the untreated case. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity under double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content. For surface treatment case, the damage sensitivity and reinforcing effect were higher than those of the untreated case. The results obtained from sensing fiber damage were correlated with the morphological observation of nano-scale structure using FE-SEM. The information on fiber damage and matrix deformation and reinforcing effect of carbon nanocomposites could be obtained from electrical resistivity measurement as a new concept of nondestructive evaluation.

스테레오 영상을 이용한 비행 중인 항공기 날개의 변위 및 진동 측정 (Measurement of Aircraft Wing Deformation and Vibration Using Stereo Pattern Recognition Method)

  • The present study was conducted by using stereo pattern recognition method(SPR method) to measure the displacement and vibration of an airplane wing in flight condition. A SPR based measurement system was developed using two visible light stereo cameras. The visible light stereo images were processed to obtain marker points by adaptive threshold method and marker filtering technique. The marker points were used to reconstruct 3D point, displacement, and vibration data. The SPR system was installed on F-16 fighter. The wing displacement and vibration were measured in flight condition. Therefore, this paper presents a possibility that SPR based measurement system using visible light stereo camera can be very useful for measuring displacement and vibration of an airplane in flight condition.

Seismic performance of single pier skewed bridges with different pier-deck connections

  • This research focuses on seismic performance of a class of single pier skewed bridges with three different pier-deck connections; skew angles vary from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. A well-documented four span continuous deck bridge has been modeled and verified. Seat-type connections with fixed and sliding bearings plus monolithic pier-deck connections are studied. Shear keys are considered either fully operational or ineffective. Seismic performances of the bridges and the structural components are investigated conducting bidirectional nonlinear time history analysis in OpenSees. Several global and intermediate engineering demand parameters (EDP) have been studied. On the basis of results, the values of demand parameters of skewed bridges, such as displacement and rotation of the deck plus plastic deformation and torsional demand of the piers, increase as the skew angle increases. In order to eliminate the deck collapse probability, the threshold skew angle is considered as $30^{\circ}$ in seat-type bridges. For bridges with skew angles greater than $30^{\circ}$, monolithic pier-deck connections should be applied. The functionality of shear keys is critical in preventing large displacements in the bearings. Pinned piers experience considerable ductility demand at the bottom.

Development of Computer Aided 3D Model From Computed Tomography Images and its Finite Element Analysis for Lumbar Interbody Fusion with Instrumentation

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanical behavior of human lumbar vertebrae (L3/L4) with and without fusion bone under physiological axial compression. The author has developed the program code to build the patient specific three-dimensional geometric model from the computed tomography (CT) images. The developed three-dimensional model provides the necessary information to the physicians and surgeons to visually interact with the model and if needed, plan the way of surgery in advance. The processed data of the model is versatile and compatible with the commercial computer aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA) software and rapid prototyping technology. The actual physical model is manufactured using rapid prototyping technique to confirm the executable competence of the processed data from the developed program code. The patient specific model of L3/L4 vertebrae is analyzed under compressive loading condition by the FEA approach. By varying the spacer position and fusion bone with and without pedicle instrumentation, simulations were carried out to find the increasing axial stiffness so as to ensure the success of fusion technique. The finding was helpful in positioning the fusion bone graft and to predict the mechanical stress and deformation of body organ indicating the critical section.

  • 여러가지 핵분열중성자(核分裂中性子) 스펙트럼에 $^{32}S(n,\;p),\;^{27}Al(n,\;{\alpha})$$^{115}In(n\;n')$ 여기함수(勵起函數)를 증율(增率)시켜 평균핵반응단면적(平均核反應斷面積)을 전자계산기(電子計算機)로 계산(計算)하였다. 그 결과(結果) 발단(發端)에너지가 높을수록 중성자(中性子)스펙트럼 변화(變化)에 따라 평균(平均) 단면적(斷面積)은 민감(敏感)하게 변화(變化)한다는 것이 판명(判明)되었다. 발단(發端)에너지가 비교적(比較的) 낮은 인디움의 경우(境遇), 핵분열특성(核分裂特性)에 따라 그의 평균(平均) 단면적(斷面積)은 크게 변화(變化)되지 않았는데 중성자(中性子) 산란작용(散亂作用)에 의(依)한 영향(影響)이 배제(排除)될 수만 있다면 인디움은 핵임계사고시(核臨界事故時)에 방출(放出)되는 중성자(中性子)의 적산계(積算計)로서 효과적(效果的)으로 사용(使用)될 수 있을 것 같았다. 더욱이 중성자선량환산인자(中性子線量換算因子)가 핵분열(核分裂) 중성자(中性子)스펙트럼에 거의 무관(無關)하다는 사실(事實)은 인디움을 핵임계사고시(核臨界事故時)의 중성자선량적산계(中性子線量積算計)로 사용할 수 있음을 뒷받침하는 것 같았다.

The electrical characteristics of flexible organic field effect transistors with flexible multi-stacked hybrid encapsulation

  • One of the critical issues for applications of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) for flexible electronic systems is the electrical stabilities of the OTFT devices, including variation of the current on/off ratio (Ion/Ioff), leakage current, threshold voltage, and hysteresis under repetitive mechanical deformation. In particular, repetitive mechanical deformation accelerates the degradation of device performance at the ambient environment. In this work, electrical stability of the pentacene organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) employing multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layers was investigated under mechanical cyclic bending. Flexible bottom-gated pentacene-based OTFTs fabricated on flexible polyimide substrate with poly-4-vinyl phenol (PVP) dielectric as a gate dielectric were encapsulated by the plasma-deposited organic layer and atomic-layer-deposited inorganic layer. For cyclic bending experiment of flexible OTFTs, the devices were cyclically bent up to 105 times with 5mm bending radius. In the most of the devices after 105 times of bending cycles, the off-current of the OTFT with no encapsulation layers was quickly increased due to increases in the conductivity of the pentacene caused by doping effects from $O_2$ and $H_2O$ in the atmosphere, which leads to decrease in the Ion/Ioff and increase in the hysteresis. With encapsulation layers, however, the electrical stabilities of the OTFTs were improved significantly. In particular, the OTFTs with multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layer showed the best electrical stabilities up to the bending cycles of $10^5$ times compared to the devices with single organic encapsulation layer. Changes in electrical properties of cyclically bent OTFTs with encapsulation layers will be discussed in detail.

화강풍화토의 동적 거동 (Dynamic Behavior of Decomposed Granite Soils)

  • 최근 우리나라도 내진설계의 필요성에 따라 지진시 등의 고변형률로부터 정밀기계기초에 미치는 미소변형률 진동까지 기초지반의 동적거동에 관한 연구가 점증하고 있는 실정이다. 한편, 화강풍화토는 국내에 가장 널리 분포되어 있는 대표적인 흙으로써 지반진동문제 해결에 필요한 지반계수 등의 동적거동 파악이 시급한 형편이나 이에 관한 연구는 극히 한정되어 있다. 본 연구는 수원지방의 화강풍화토에 대하여 간극비, 포화도가 다른 공시체를 제작하여 구속압력 및 반복응력비를 변화시켜 공진주시험과 반복삼축시험을 실시하여 불포화 화강풍화토의 동적거동을 고찰하였고 지반보강을 위하여 흔히 사용되는 흙-시멘트 혼합토에 대하여도 시멘트 혼합비와 간극비를 달리한 공시체에 대하여 같은 조건하에 동적거동을 구명하기 위한 두가지 같은 실험을 수행하였다. 연구결과 불포화 화강풍화토의 전단탄성계수는 표면장력에 지배되며 최적포화도는 간극비에 따라 공진주 시험인 경우 약 17%~l8%, 반복삼축시험인 경우 약 10%~l5% 로 나타났다. 또한, 수원지역의 화강풍화토에 대한 한계 변형률 범위와 평균전단탄성계수도 추정할 수 있었다. 한편, 일련의 공진주시험과 반복삼축시험의 결과를 토대로 하여 화강풍화토의 시멘트 혼합량에 따른 최대전단탄성계수 추정식을 비교적 조밀한 경우와 비교적 느슨한 경우로 나누어 제안하였다.

마찰력이 작용하는 동적 시스템의 점착 구현을 위한 마찰모델 제안 및 정확성 검증 (A Dry Friction Model to Realize Stick for Simulation of the System with Friction and Accuracy Verification of the Friction Model)

  • Friction causes self-excited vibration, stick-slip vibration and any other friction-induced phenomena. That kinds of vibrations cause chatter and squeal. In order to predict such vibrations accurately, employing an accurate friction model is very important because a dynamic behavior of a system with friction is dominantly governed by a friction model. A Coulomb friction model is the most widely known model. Coulomb friction model is useful model to obtain analytical solutions of the system with friction and the model gives relatively good simulation result. However, defining a friction force at a stick state in simulation is hard because of the characteristic itself and a Coulomb friction model is discontinuous function between a static and a dynamic friction coefficient. Therefore, applying the Coulomb friction model to a simulation is not appropriate. In order to resolve these problems, an approximated Coulomb friction model was developed using simple and continuous function. However, an approximated Coulomb friction model cannot realize stick. Therefore, an approximated Coulomb friction model cannot describe friction phenomena accurately. In order to analyze a friction phenomenon accurately, a friction model for a simulation was proposed in this paper. A proposed friction model realizes stick and gives reasonably good results compared to results obtained by the simulation employing an approximated Coulomb friction model. Accuracy of a proposed friction model was verified by comparing experimental results.
