  • The unpredicted worldwide oil price makes the energy efficiency technology be more importance than any other period. The small cogeneration system is one of the most representative technology among the energy efficiency technologies, and recently, the household cogeneration system has been the center object of attention because of the loss of power transmission and the reasonable energy consumption relative to the household (condensing) boiler producing heat only. A tiny, 1kW of electrical output, gas fueled internal combustion engine cogeneration system was investigated. The electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency of the system were measured. With the emission characteristics, the cogeneration system was analyzed. It was showed the gas engine cogeneration system produced the lowest NOx level compared any other cogeneration system due to the three-way catalyst.

  • Since photocatalysts are activated by lights of UV wavelengths, plasma is alternatively used as a light source for a photocatalytic reactor. Light intensity generated by plasma is proportional to the surface area of catalytic material, and this, in many practical applications, is prescribed by the geometry of a plasma generator. Thus, it is crucial to increase the surface area far sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction. For example, in a pack-bed type reactor, multitudes of beads are used as a substrate in order to increase the surface area. Honeycomb monolith type substrate, which has very good surface area to volume ratio, has been difficult to apply plasma as a light source due to the fact that light penetration depth through the honeycomb monolith was too short to cover sufficient area, thus resulting in poor intensity for photocatalytic reaction. In this study, nonthermal plasma generation through a photocatalytic reactor of honeycomb monolith substrate is investigated to lengthen this short penetration depth. The ceramic honeycomb monolith substrate used in this study has the same length as a three way catalyst used fur automotive applications, and it is shown that sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction can also be obtained with honeycomb monolith type reactor.

  • Monometallic, bimetallic and trimetallic particles consisting of different weight compositions of Pt-Pd-Rh over pure alumina wash coats have been synthesized and their catalytic performance on methane conversion was studied from 150 to $600^{\circ}C$. Different catalyst formulations with variable Pt, Pd and Rh contents for bimetallic and trimetallic systems were tried and $Pt_{(1.5)}Rh_{(0.3)}/Al_2O_3$ and $Pt_{(1.0)}Pd_{(1.0)}Rh_{(0.3)}/Al_2O_3$ shows low $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$ temperatures. Bimetallic and trimetallic particle synergism acts as three way catalysts and therefore, all the catalysts show 100% methane conversion. The effect of supports such as $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$ on methane combustion was investigated; from $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$ results both $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ are suitable supports for low temperature methane combustion.

  • Natural gas is a high-octane fuel that is effective in controlling knocking combustion. In addition, as a low-carbon fuel with a high hydrogen-carbon ratio, it emits less carbon dioxide and almost no particulate matter compared to conventional fossil fuels. Stoichiometric combustion engines equipped with a three-way catalyst are useful in various fields such as transportation and power generation because of their excellent exhaust emission reduction performance. However, stoichiometric combustion engines have a disadvantage of lower thermal efficiency compared to lean combustion engines. In this study, a combination of high compression ratio and Atkinson cycle was implemented in a 11 liter, 6-cylinder, spark-ignition engine to improve the thermal efficiency of the stoichiometric engine. As a result, pumping and friction losses were reduced and the operating range was extended with optimized Atkinson camshaft. Based on the exhaust gas limit temperature of 730℃, the maximum load and thermal efficiency were improved to BMEP 0.66 MPa and BTE 35.7% respectively.

  • LPG direct injection (LPDi) technology is a method of improving the weaknesses of existing LPG vehicles by directly injection into the combustion chamber. This study was conducted on the comparison of emissions and fuel efficiency performance of the engine and vehicle by applying LPDi technology. The LPDi hybrid engine's maximum output and maximum torque were measured at an equivalent level of less than 1% compared to conventional gasoline fuel. The fuel amount was corrected using the LCU controller, and the THC, CO, and NOx emissions were reduced to 90% in the operating range of the three-way catalyst through air-fuel ratio control. The analysis of THC+NOx and CO emissions in FTP-75 (CVS-75) driving mode satisfied the US LEV III SULEV30 regulation.

  • $TiO_2$- and $SiO_2$-supported $Co_3O_4$, Pt and $Co_3O_4$-Pt catalysts have been studied for CO and $C_3H_8$ oxidations at temperatures less than $250^{\circ}C$ which is a lower limit of light-off temperatures to oxidize them during emission test cycles of gasoline-fueled automotives with TWCs (three-way catalytic converters) consisting mainly of Pt, Pd and Rh. All the catalysts after appropriate activation such as calcination at $350^{\circ}C$ and reduction at $400^{\circ}C$ exhibited significant dependence on both their preparation techniques and supports upon CO oxidation at chosen temperatures. A Pt/$TiO_2$ catalyst prepared by using an ion-exchange method (IE) has much better activity for such CO oxidation because of smaller Pt nanoparticles, compared to a supported Pt obtained via an incipient wetness (IW). Supported $Co_3O_4$-only catalysts are very active for CO oxidation even at $100^{\circ}C$, but the use of $TiO_2$ as a support and the IW technique give the best performances. These effects on supports and preparation methods were indicated for $Co_3O_4$-Pt catalysts. Based on activity profiles of CO oxidation at $100^{\circ}C$ over a physical mixture of supported Pt and $Co_3O_4$ after activation under different conditions, and typical light-off temperatures of CO and unburned hydrocarbons in common TWCs as tested for $C_3H_8$ oxidation at $250^{\circ}C$ with a Pt-exchanged $SiO_2$ catalyst, this study may offer an useful approach to substitute $Co_3O_4$ for a part of platinum group metals, particularly Pt, thereby lowering the usage of the precious metals.

  • Recently, because of the increased oil prices globally, there have been studies investigating the improvement of fuel-conversion efficiency in internal combustion engines. The improvements realized in thermal efficiency using lean combustion are essential because they enable us to realize higher thermal efficiency in gasoline engines because lean combustion leads to an increase in the heat-capacity ratio and a reduction of the combustion temperature. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines enable lean combustion by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder and controlling the combustion parameters precisely. However, the extension of the flammability limit and the stabilization of lean combustion are required for the commercialization of GDI engines. The reduction characteristics of three-way catalysts (TWC) for lean combustion engines are somewhat limited owing to the high excess air ratio and low exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in the present study, we assess the reaction of exhaust gases and their production in terms of the development of efficient TWCs for lean-burn GDI engines at 2000 rpm / BMEP 2 bar operating conditions, which are frequently used when evaluating the fuel consumption in passenger vehicles. At the lean-combustion operating point, $NO_2$ was produced during combustion and the ratio of $NO_2$ increased, while that of $N_2O$ decreased as the excess air ratio increased.

  • Recently, registrated passenger cars have increased and were close about seventy million at the end 2017 year in Korea. Among the passenger car using gasoline fuel make up forty six percentage of total registrated vehicles. In this study, investigation on real driving emission characteristics in the passenger car using gasoline fuel with various engine displacements were carried out. The real driving emission characteristics were measured and analyzed by using PEMS (Portable Emission Measurement System). PEMS was composed of gas analyzer, emission flow meter and sample conditioning system et al. Also, test six vehicles were selected to the gasoline passenger car with engine displacement from 1.6L to 3.7L. Two test routes with engine start of cold and hot conditions were applied to analyze the emission characteristics of RDE, respectively. The results show that the $CO_2$ emission have a increasing trend as the engine displacement and vehicle weight. Also, it is guessed that the $CO_2$ emission and vehicle weight were more correlated than the engine displacements. On the other hand, NOx emissions of RDE have not increasing or decreasing tendency according engine displacements or vehicle weight because the activation of three-way catalyst in the gasoline vehicles.

  • Technical ceramics, due to their unique physical properties, are excellent candidate materials for engineering applications involving extreme thermal and chemical environments. When ceramics are rapidly cooled, they receive thermal shock. The thermal shock parameter is defined as the critical temperature difference. The critical temperature difference for ceramic parts is influenced by its size, the convective heat transfer coefficient, etc. The thermal shock for a component is analyzed by using the transient thermal stress. If the transient thermal stress exceeds the modulus of rupture (MOR), cracking by thermal shock is initiated. The critical temperature difference for water is less than the critical temperature difference for air. The three-way catalyst substrate used in this study has an adequate performance against thermal shock because its radial and axial temperature differences existed below the critical temperature differences.

  • The major source of harmful air pollutants in Korea have been shifted as economy grows. Particulate matter(PM) and Sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) emitted from industries and coal-fired domestic sectors were important pollutants in 1970's and later industrializing period of Korea. Then the characteristic of pollution was changed into so-called "developed country type pollution". Vehicles have been responsible for significant amount of Nitric oxide ($NO_x$) pollution and consequent Ozone formation in urban area since 1990's. Variety of control measures have been introduced to deal with the vehicle emissions in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). Emission control technologies have successfully reduced pollutants from vehicles. Three-way catalyst for vehicles fueled by gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), for example, has achieved large amount of pollutants. Compressed natural gas (CNG) urban bus have penetrated existing diesel bus market and reduces PM and $NO_x$ emissions in many Korean cities. However, diesel vehicles are still reaming as a critical emission source of urban area. Diesel vehicles gain more popularity than ever because of their better fuel efficiency and driving power. Unfortunately, it is widely known that the pollutant emissions of diesel vehicles are much larger than those of gasoline and LPG vehicles. In this note, we briefly introduce the trends of emission control strategies which are accomplished by automotive industries for about last ten years. Emission regulation, cleaner fuel, diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other measures are discussed from technical as well as legislative perspectives.
