  • A three dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis is used to study the influence of various design decisions for tieback walls. The numerical model simulates the soldier piles and the tendon bonded length of the anchors with beam elements, the unbonded tendon with a spring element, the wood lagging with the shell elements, and the soil with solid 3D nonlinear elements. The soil model used is a modified hyperbolic model with unloading hysteresis. The complete sequence of construction is simulated including the excavation, and the placement and stressing of the anchors. The numerical model is calibrated against a full scale instrumented tieback wall at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site (NGES) on the Riverside Campus of Texas A&M University. Then a parametric study is conducted. The results give information on the influence of the following factors on the wall behavior : location of the first anchor, length of the tendon unbonded zone, magnitude of the anchor forces, embedment of the soldier piles, stiffness of the wood lagging, and of the piles. The implications in design are discussed.

  • For windshield defrosting, flow analysis of inner room(vehicle) and heat conduction on the windshield surface are undertaken. Simulation for defrosting enthalpy method is usedand verification of heat and fluid flow analysis for room is done in cavity flow. The defrosting process is three dimensional phenomena and phase is changing. The result of defrosting analysis are well presenting the phase change and these results offer basic design data for defrosting phenomena.

  • Numerical analysis of turbulent flow in three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes are calculated for analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, a full-3d simulation based on solid elements has been reported as a reliable approach. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on 3d solid elements. Numerical analyses have been applied to the injection molding processes of three aspheric lenses for an image sensing module of a mobile phone. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experimental results.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis to estimate condensation heat and mass transfer of the condenser was carried out using the PMA (porous medium approach). In the PMA, the details of tube bundle in the condenser are replaced by the porous medium, and the flow resistance term is added in the momentum equation. In this regard, the PMA is quite helpful for the study of tube bundle in the large condenser. The pressure loss through tube bundle can be compensated by viscous and inertial momentum sink terms, which was validated numerically. Value of the pressure drop was compared to that of Butterworth correlation. Three dimensional analysis of condensation for McAllister condenser with the PMA was conducted using Fluent 6.2 and UDFs (use-defined functions). The result of condensation rate was analogous to previous results (experimental and numerical data).

  • The depression of the external situation like the departure of WTO system and the plan of EEZ proclaim is forcing fishery into improving their fishing condition. By this international and domestic circumstance, development of the sea water cooling apparatus for fish hold storage is demanded sincerely. This study represents the thermal characteristics of the fish hold storage during transportation. The numerical analysis in this study is the finite volume method with the SIMPLE computational algorithm to study the seawater flow behavior in the fish hold storage. The computation were carried out with the variations of the circulating flow velocity and depth of fish hold storage. As the result of the three dimensional simulations, the mean temperature doesn't almost change by the circulating flow rate. find the mean temperature is suddenly changed by the ratio of depth of fish hold storage.

  • Numerical analysis of three dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in LNG marine high pressure drop control valves was carried out by using the CFD-ACE from ESI-Group. In this study, flow characteristics of control valves with complex flow fields including cavitation effect were investigated. Simulation was performed on five models of control valve that had different orifice diameters of anti-trim and the size of valve. Comparing newly designed control valves for controling the occurrence of cavitation with the conventional valve, new valves showed a improved flow pattern with almost no cavitation.

  • Numerical analysis has been conducted to simulate pedestrian flow in the model of two-storied subway station. Because almost all the subway stations are two or three storied structure, simulations are conducted for the passengers those who get off the train and pass the wicket. Passenger flow analysis is very important factor to design the station and also to manage the operation of subway system. In the subway station, pedestrians move to the horizontal directions as well as vertical ones. Therefore, to consider the movement of pedestrians is necessary for the guarantee of safety and conveniency. As the up and down floors are connected with step, escalator and elevator, the entire movements in the multi-storied station should be simulated as like a 3-dimensional flow. Numerical schemes for the directional sweeping are developed to prevent the dependency on physical structure of station and to determine primary direction and secondary one. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of exit and elapsed time.

  • Three-dimensional numerical analyses of mechanical ventilation system in vent shaft of subway in operation are carried out in relation with the different air flow passage of vent shaft and two ventilation operation modes of push/pull, The ventilation characteristics of vent shaft with regard to the shape change are evaluated. And the air flow rate through the vent shaft by ventilation system is measured within subway in operation to assess the accuracy and applicability of the numerical analysis method. The decrease of air flow rate due to vent-shaft change are between 0.7 to 2.2% in the cases examined.

  • One of the most common applications of ferrocement is the manufacturing of thin stiffened plates which are prone to buckling. This study focuses on the investigation of the behavior of a ferrocement plate, stiffened in both directions by means of an appropriate grid of ribs. In the present paper detailed three-dimensional numerical Finite Element models are formulated for the simulation of the behavior of the structure under study, which are able to take into account both the geometric and material non-linearities that are present in the subject at hand (plasticity, cracking, large displacements). The difference among the formulated models lies on the use of different types of finite elements. The numerical results obtained by each model are compared and the most efficient model is determined. Finally, this model is in the sequel used for the further investigation of the effect of different parameters on the ultimate load capacity, such as the initial out-of-plane imperfection of the plate and the interaction between the axial loads in both directions.
