In this study, two dimensional and three dimensional finite element models of lower first premolar were analyzed. The mandibular specimen including a premolar was obtained from a cadaver and scanned with micro-CT. Finite element method models were reconstructed from CT images at mid-sagittal plane of the tooth. Most studies have used a wide range of value(0.07${\~}$1000MPa) for elastic modulus of periodontal ligament. The elastic modulus of the periodontal ligament was analyzed by finite element method and compared with that of experiment model. This study indicated that the model without pulp was more suitable than that with pulp in two dimensional finite element analysis.
Crystallographic texture evolution during forming processes has a significant effect on the anisotropic flow behavior of crystalline material. In this study, a crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM), which incorporates the crystal plasticity constitutive law into a three-dimensional finite element method, was used to investigate texture evolution of a face-centered-cubic material - an aluminum alloy. A rate-dependent polycrystalline theory was fully implemented within an in-house program, CAMPform3D. Each integration point in the element was considered to be a polycrystalline aggregate consisting of a large number of grains, and the deformation of each grain in the aggregate was assumed to be the same as the macroscopic deformation of the aggregate. The texture evolution during three different deformation modes - uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, and plane strain compression - was investigated in terms of pole figures and compared to experimental data available in the literature.

Two dimensional Analysis has been applied to most of tunnel lining design in these days. Two dimensional analysis uses beam or curved beam element for finite element method. But because the behaviors of tunnel concrete lining structure is near to shell, it is required to model the tunnel lining as shell structure for safety design of tunnel lining structure. In this paper, two dimensional analysis by beam element and the three dimensional analysis by shell element of tunnel concrete lining are studied, in which 3 type of tunnel lining and lateral pressure factors are considered. As results of the study, three dimensional analyses of the behavior of tunnel concrete lining structure considering lateral pressure factor shows that the moment of three dimensional analysis is greater than those of two dimensional analysis. The results shows that three dimensional analysis is necessary for safety design of tunnel lining.
Clinical application of composite resin recently draw great concerns in dentistry. Especially due to advantages such as esthetics, adhesiveness, simple clinical procedures, various shapes and kinds of composite resins are widely being applied to prosthodontics, conservative dentistry, and orthodontics. But, clinical problems attributable to the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin have been proposed, and we have to regard clinical problems such as secondary caries, loss of restoration, fracture of the surrounding tooth structure, marginal discoloration, and tooth sensitivity, and many portions are remained to be overcome. Therefore, this study attempts to analyze stress distribution between resin and tooth structure which is generated during polymerization shrinkage of composite resin using three dimensional finite element method. Three dimensional finite element models with conventional box-shape cavity and erosion/abrasion type V-shape lesion cavity in upper central incisor were developed. These cavities were filled with four different types of placement techniques. (bulk filling, horizontal increment filling, oblique occlusal increment filling, oblique gingival increment filling) The stresses generated by polymerization shrinkage of composite resin were calculated. The results analyzed with three dimensional finite element method were as follows : 1. The increment filling technique showed the highest maximum normal stress in both conventional box-shape and V-shape cavities and showed a tendency to decrease after complete polymerization. 2. The bulk filling technique resulted in increased stresses during the curing process in both conventional box-shape and V-shape cavities and the highest maximum normal stress occurred after complete polymerization. 3. The bulk filling resulted in the lowest maximum normal stress in both box-shape and V-shape cavities 4. Regardless of placement method, in conventional box-shape cavity, the maximum normal stress increased in dentin floor, enamel, dentin sequence and in V-shape cavity, the maximum normal stress increased in enamel, dentin sequence.

In this paper, The bulging behavior of the solidified shell in continuously cast slabs have been numerically analyzed using three-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element method Three-dimensional model has been applied in order to investigate the effect of the narrow face shell on restraining the bulging deflection. Solidification analysis are carried out by two-dimensional finite difference method. In this way, strains occurring at the solidification front near the narrow face of the slab, as well as those occurring in the board face have been computed. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. In addition, the effect of the slab width and casting speed on the bulging are discussed.
A FE-(FE-HE)-BE procedure is presented for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams. In this technique, dam body is discretized by solid finite elements, while the reservoir domain is considered by a combination of fluid finite elements and a three-dimensional fluid hyper-element. Furthermore, foundation rock domain is handled by three-dimensional boundary element formulation. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various conditions. Moreover, the effects of canyon shape on response of dam, is also discussed.
Smart flanges are used for pipeline and riser repair in subsea. In a typical case in the gas export pipeline project, the end cap bolts of a 4inch smart flange were broken during operation, and in turn leakage occurred. This work presents the detail of three dimensional finite element analysis of the smart flange to support the observed end cap bolts failure. From finite element analysis it turns out that in the presence of external bending moment, an uneven contact distribution is present between seal and end cap, which in turn changes the uniform load distribution on bolts and threaten the integrity of bolts. On the other hand, 3D finite element analysis of interaction between pipeline and seabed is presented by means of Abaqus to explore the distribution of bending moment along the pipeline route. It is found that lateral buckling occurs in the pipeline which introduces large bending moment.
The finite element alternating method is a convenient and efficient method to analyze three-dimensional cracks embedded in an infinite or a finite body because the method has the property that the uncracked body and cracks can be modeled independently. In this paper the method was applied for fatigue crack growth simulation. A surface crack in a cylinder was considered as an initial crack and the crack configurations and stress intensity factors during the crack growth were obtained. In this paper the finite element alternating method proposed by Nikishkov, Park and Atluri was used after modification. In the method, as the required solution for a crack in an infinite body, the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method formulated by Li and Mear was used. And a crack was modeled as distribution of displacement discontinuities, and the governing equation was formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations.

This paper describes an automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for three-dimensional structures consisting of tree-form surfaces. This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Voronoi diagram method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.

This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.
