In order to investigate the effect of nozzle on stress concentration in pressure vessels, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed. The results were compared with those for corresponding two dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses. A three dimensional finite element model with a surface crack was also designed to evaluate the effect of internal pressure and heat transfer on crack face, and the resulting stress intensity factors from the finite element analyses were compared with those for ASME Sec. XI and Raju-Newman's stress intensity factor solution. As a result, the validity of currently available stress intensity factor solutions for a surface crack was reviewed in the presence of geometrical complexity, heat transfer and internal pressure.
Finite element alternating method has been suggested and used effectively to obtain the fracture parameters in assessing the integrity of cracked structures. The method obtains the solution from alternating independently between the FEM solution for an uncracked body and the crack solution in an infinite body. In the paper, the finite element alternating method is extended in order to obtain the elastic-plastic stress fields of a three dimensional inner crack. The three dimensional crack solutions for an infinite body were obtained using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. As an example of a three dimensional inner crack, a penny-shaped crack in a finite body was analyzed and the obtained elastc-plastic stress fields were compared with the solution obtained from the finite element analysis with fine mesh. It is noted that in the region ahead of the crack front the stress values from FEAM are close to the values from FEM. But large discrepancy between two values is observed near the crack surfaces.

To reduce the effort in preprocessing of finite element analysis, we developed two types of three-dimensional finite element models based on the standard teeth model. Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element models by considering the measuring factors such as angulation, crown inclination, rotation and translations. The finite element analysis for the wire activation with a T-loop arch wire was carried out. Mechanical behavior on the movement and the initial stress for the malocclusion finite element model was shown to agree with the objectives of the actual treatment. Finite element models and procedures of analysis developed in this study would be suitably utilized for the design of initial shape of the wire and determination of activation displacements.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare stress distributions of implant-supported crown placed in fibula bone model with those in intact mandible model using three-dimensional finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two three-dimensional finite element models were created to analyze biomechanical behaviors of implant-supported crowns placed in intact mandible and fibula model. The finite element models were generated from patient's computed tomography data. The model for grafted fibula was composed of fibula block, dental implant system, and implant-supported crown. In the mandible model, same components with identical geometries with the fibula model were used except that the mandible replaced the fibula. Vertical and oblique loadings were applied on the crowns. The highest von Mises stresses were investigated and stress distributions of the two models were analyzed. RESULTS. Overall stress distributions in the two models were similar. The highest von Mises stress values were higher in the mandible model than in the fibula model. In the individual prosthodontic components there was no prominent difference between models. The stress concentrations occurred in cortical bones in both models and the effect of bicortical anchorage could be found in the fibula model. CONCLUSION. Using finite element analysis it was shown that the implant-supported crown placed in free fibula graft might function successfully in terms of biomechanical behavior.
A prediction method for determining the welding residual stress by artificial neural network is proposed. A three-dimensional transient thermomechanical analysis has been performed for the CO $_{2}$ Arc Welding using the finite element method. The validity of the above results is demonstrated by experimental elastic stress relief method which is called Holl Drilling Method. The first part of numarical analysis performs a three-dimensional transient heat transfer anslysis, and the second part then uses results of the first part and performs a three-dimensional transient thermo-clasto-plastic analysis to compute transient and residual stresses in the weld. Data from the finite element method were used to train a backpropagation neural network to predict residual stress. Architecturally, the finite element method were used to train a backpropagation voltage and the current, a hidden layer to accommodate failure mechanism mapping, and an output layer for residual stress. The trained network was then applied to the prediction of residual stress in the four specimens. The results of predicted residual stress have been very encouraging.
Many analysis methods, including finite element method, have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrary three dimensional cracks, the finite element alternating method is extended. The crack is modeled by the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method as a distribution of displacement discontinuities, which is formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations. And the finite element method is used to calculate the stress values for the uncracked body only. Applied the proposed method to several example problems for planner cracks in finite bodies, the accuracy and efficiency of the method were demonstrated.
The measurement of residual stress distribution of $Si_3N_4/SUS304$ joint was performed on 23 specimens with the same joint condition using PSPC type X-ray stress measurement system and the two-dimensional elastoplastic analysis using finite element method was also attempted. As results, residual stress distribution near the interface on the ceramic side of the joint was revealed quantitatively. Residual stress on the ceramic side of the joint was turned out to be tensional near the interface, maximum along the edge, varying in accordance with the condition of the joint and variance to be most conspicuous for the residual stress normal to the interface characterized by the stress singularities. In the vicinity of the interface, the high stress concentration occurs and residual stress distributes three-dimensionally. Therefore, the measured stress distribution differed remarkably from the result of the two-dimensional finite-element analysis. Especially at the center of the specimen near the interface, the residual stress, $\sigma_{x}$ obtained from the finite element analysis was compressive, whereas measurement using X-ray yielded tensile $\sigma_{x}$. Here we discuss two dimensional superposition model the discrepancy between the results from the two dimensional finite element analysis and X-ray measurement.
In this study, the geometric modeling has been conducted for the current lower end fitting and 2 candidates using three-dimensional solid modeler, Solidworks. Then, the three-dimensional stress analysis using the finite element method has been performed. The evaluation for the mechanical integrity of 2 candidates has been performed based on the stress distribution obtained from the finite element analysis.
Three dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method(FEM) were developed to predict the mechanical behavior of hip implants. The purpose of this study is to investigate the stress distribution of two types of cementless total hip replacement femoral component -a straight stem and a curved stem, and to compare their effect on the stress shielding between two types by three dimensional finite element method. The authors analyzed von Mises stress in the cortex & stem and compared the stress between the straight and the curved stem. In comparison of stresses between two different design of femoral stem, there was 25% more decrease of stress in straight stem than curved stem in the medial cortex at proximal region. The straight stem had consistently much lower stresses than the curved stem throughout the whole medial cortex with maximum 70% reduction of stress. However, there was little change in stress between nature and 2 implanted femur throughout the lateral cortex. Stress of femoral stem was much higher in the straight stem than the curved stem up to 60%. The straight stem had more chance of stress shielding and a risk of fatigue fracture of the stem compared with the curved stem in noncement hip arthroplasty. In design of femoral stem still we have to consider to develop design to distribute more even stress on the proximal medial cortex.
