  • Since a typical plate heat exchanger is made up of a huge number of unitary cells, it may be impossible to predict the aero-thermal performance of the full scale heat exchanger through three-dimensional numerical simulation due to the enormous amount of computing resources and time required. In the present study, a simple flow-network model using the friction factor correlation and a thermal-network model based on the effectiveness-number of transfer units (${\varepsilon}$-NTU) method has been developed. The complicated flow pattern inside the cross-corrugated heat exchanger has been modeled into flow and thermal networks. Using this model, the heat transfer between neighboring streams can be considered, and the pressure drop and the heat transfer rate of full-scale heat exchanger matrix are calculated. In the calculation, the aero-thermal performance of each unitary cell of the heat exchanger matrix was evaluated using correlations of the Fanning friction factor f and the Nusselt number Nu, which were calculated by unitary-cell CFD model.

Performance analysis of Savonius Rotor for Wave Energy Conversion using CFD

  • A general purpose viscous flow solver Ansys CFX is used to study a Savonius type wave energy converter in a 3D numerical viscous wave tank. This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the effect of blade configuration on the performance of 3 bladed Savonius rotors for wave energy extraction. A piston-type wave generator was incorporated in the computational domain to generate the desired incident waves. A complete OWC system with a 3-bladed Savonius rotor was modeled in a three dimensional numerical wave tank and the hydrodynamic conversion efficiency was estimated. The flow over the rotors is assumed to be two-dimensional (2D), viscous, turbulent and unsteady. The CFX code is used with a solver of the coupled conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, with an implicit time scheme and with the adoption of the hexahedral mesh and the moving mesh techniques in areas of moving surfaces. Turbulence is modeled with the k.e model. Simulations were carried out simultaneously for the rotor angle and the helical twist. The results indicate that the developed models are suitable to analyze the water flows both in the chamber and in the turbine. For the turbine, the numerical results of torque were compared for all the cases.

Modeling of air cushion vehicle's flexible seals under steady state conditions

  • The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the efficacy of modeling a surface effect ship's air-cushion flexible seal utilizing a two-dimensional beam under steady state conditions. This effort is the initial phase of developing a more complex three-dimensional model of the air-seal-water fluid-structure interaction. The beam model incorporates the seal flexural rigidity and mass with large deformations while assuming linear elastic material response. The hydrodynamic pressure is derived utilizing the OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver for a given set of steady-state flow condition. The pressure distribution derived by the CFD solver is compared with the pressure required to deform the seal beam model. The air pressure, flow conditions and seal geometry are obtained from experimental analysis. The experimental data was derived from large-scale experimental tests utilizing a test apparatus of a canonical surface effect ship's flexible seal in a towing tank over a variety of test conditions.

OLED 증착을 위한 선형증발원 히터 위치선정 (Selection of Heater Location in Linear Source for OLED Vapor Deposition)

  • Organic light emitting diode(OLED) is one of the most promising type of future flat panel display. A linear source is used to deposite organic vapor to a large size OLED substrate. An electric heater which is attached on the side of linear source heats the organic powder for the sublimation. The nozzle of heater, which is attached at the top of the linear source has an optimal temperature. An numerical analysis has been performed to find optimal heater position for the optimal nozzle temperature. A commercial CFD program, FLUENT, is used on the analysis. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis have been performed. The analysis showed that the heater should be attached at the outer side of crucible wall rather than inner side of housing, which was original design. Eighteen milimeter from the top of the linear source was suggested as the optimal position of heater. Improving thermal performance of linear source not only helps the uniformity of organic vapor deposition on the substrate but also increase productibity of vapor deposition process.

침선어초 주위의 유동특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of the Flow around a Sunken Vessel)

  • This paper deals with the numerical and experimental study on the characteristics of the flow around a sunken vessel. Numerical simulation of the two dimensional steady flow on the midship section are carried out by the CFD code which is developed by using finite volume method and which includes the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model with standard wall function. A experimental study is also carried out for the 1/100 scale model in circulating water channel. A velocity fields around the ship are measuremed by using particle image velocimetry technique. And the fluid forces acting on the ship hull by uniform current are measured by two axis load cell. The computed and measured velocity fields on the midship section are compared with each other in the view point of velocity dstribution and reattachement length, which shows good agreement in quality. The drag force on the vessel also showed the same tendency in both computational and experimental results. However, the quantitative disagreements are shown due to the three dimensional effect of the experiment. The result are used to determine the functional efficiency and stability of the vessel as a artificial reef.

2-D & 3-D Calculations for the Effect of Guide Vane of Impulse Turbine

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of impulse turbine for owe type wave energy conversion device. Numerical analysis was performed using a commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes the variation of the setting angle of guide vane. Since parametric study at various flaw coefficients requires tremendous amounts of computing time, two-dimensional cascade flaw approximation was employed to find out optimum principal particulars in rather simple manner. Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several cases to confirm the validity of two-dimensional approach. Results were compared to other experimental data, for instance Setoguchi et al (2001)'s extensive set of data, and found to be well demonstrating the usefulness of 2-D analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of each method were also evaluated.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present UAV(TR-S5-04) finite element model is constructed as a full three-dimensional configuration with different fuel conditions and tilting angles for helicopter, transient and airplane flight modes. In addition, the 3-dimensional supporting equipment structures of electronic devices are considered for vibration analysis. As the results of this study, transient structural displacements and accelerations are presented in detail. Moreover, vibration characteristics of structural parts and installed equipments are investigated for different fuel conditions and tilting angles.

A computational approach to the simulation of controlled flows by synthetic jets actuators

  • The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.

3차원 patched-grid 알고리즘을 이용한 삼각 날개-원통형 동체 형상 전산 해석 (Computational Analysis of the Delta Wing-Cylindrical Body Configuration Using the Three-Dimensional Patched-Grid Algorithm)

  • 기존 정렬 격자의 많은 제약 조건들을 완화할 수 있는 patched-grid 알고리즘을 이용하여 효율적으로 정렬 격자계를 구성하였다. EFD-CFD 워크숍의 case 4: 삼각 날개-원통형 동체 형상에 크게 3가지의 접근 방식을 적용하여 기존의 격자 생성 문제점들을 해결하였고, 실험값과 비교하여 검증하였다. 고 받음각 영역에서 표면 압력 분포가 실험값과 다소 차이를 보였다. 마하수의 증가에 따른 피칭 모멘트의 기울기 변화를 분석하였고 이는 tuck under 현상으로 설명할 수 있었다. 초음속 영역에서는 형상 앞에 궁형 충격파가 발생함으로써 삼각익 뒷전까지 양력을 발생시키는 영역이 확장되었다. 또한, 마하수와 받음각에 따라 압력 중심과 무게 중심의 위치를 비교하여 피칭 모멘트의 경향성을 분석하였다.
