This study was carried out to examine the effects of animal manure on efficiency of the nitrogen utilization of silage corn (Zea mays L.) and soil fertility. The experiment was conducted on the field plot at Gongiam, Kwangju, Kyunggi-Do for 3 years, from 1996 to 1998, and arranged in split-plot design with three replications. The main plots were two kinds of composts such as swine manure fermented with sawdust (SMFWS) and swine manure fermented without sawdust (SMF). Subplots were the nitrogen fertilization rate (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400kgNhalyear). The nitrogen (N) yield increased as the nitrogen fertilization rate increased up to a rate of 300 kg Nha, but decreased at rate of 400 kg Nlha. Nitrogen yield in SMF treatments was higher than that of SMFWS treatments. But there were no significant differences between SMFWS and SMF treatments. Organic matter (OM) content of the soils in SMFWS was higher than that of SMF, &d was not significantly different between SMFWS and SMF treatments. OM content increased with increasing the nitrogen fertilization rate. Total nitrogen (TN) content of the soils increased as the nitrogen fertilization rate increased. No difference of TN content was found between SMFWS and SMF treatments. (Key words : Swine manure, Compost, Corn, Sawdust, Nutritive value)

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of cultivar and tedding frequency on changes of moisture content of oat(Avena sativa L.) hay during field drying and on quality of baled oat hay after storage. The experimental design was a split-plot with the four oat cultivm such as 'Magnum', 'Cayuse', 'West' and 'Murray' as main plots and the two tedding frequencies such as 1 or 3 times a day as subplots in three replications. Moisture content of fresh cut oat cultivar was higher in the order of 'Magnum', 'Cayuse', 'West', and 'Murray' and the moisture content difference among the cultivm was maintained to the final curing day(P< 0.05). Moisture loss from the oat hay during the last 3 curing days was greater with 3 tedding a day than I tedding a day. Temperature of baled oat hay began to rise critically from the 6th day of storage and wa5 highest in 'Magnum' oat cultivar($45.3^{\circ}C$). Total nitrogen and ADIN contents of late maturing oat hay 'Magnum' and 'Cayuse' were higher than those of early maturing 'Murray' and 'West'. Tedding frequency did not influence total nitrogen and ADIN contents. ADF and NDF contents of early maturing oat hay were higher than those of late maturing oat hay. Relative feed value (RFV) of 'Magnum' oat hay was the highest(l06) and classified as Grade 2 in forage quality standard. Quality grade difference between early and late maturing oat cultivan was only 1 or 2.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of seed disinfectant, in control of brown leaf blight, growth characteristics, and dry root yield in the cultivation of Alisma plantago after early maturing rice cropping. Experimental plot was laid out in split plots design with three replications. The major seed disinfectants were benomyl Wp, 20%, Captan Wp, 50%, Triferine Ec, 17%, Etridia zole Ec, 25%, and Thioplant-mythyl Wp, 50%. Even though seed disinfectant treated had no effect on the growth and flowering date of Alisma plantago, dry root yield was increased largely with benomyl Wp, 20%, in seed disinfectant than in the other seed disinfectants and contorl. All seed disinfectants had no injury with standard dosage. But all seed disinfectants had slight injury in the double dosage level for the Alisma plantago. On the basis of yield, vegetative and disease paramerer, benomyl Wp (20%) ($100g/20{\ell}$) had shown superior performance, however, all the seed disinfectants are effective as compare to without treatment.

Growth characteristics and seed productivities of orchardgrass "Hwabsung 2 Ho" cultivated for seed production were examined in the NLRI from 2000 to 2002. The experimental design was a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The main-plots were three drill widths of 15, 30 and 45cm, and subplots were four nitrogen application levels of 45, 90, 135 and 180kg/ha in early spring. Lodging was less in 45cm of drill width than in 15 and 30cm and was not severe by 90kg per ha of nitrogen including 45cm of drill width. Number of panicles per $1\m^2$ was tended to be more in 15cm of drill width than in 30 or 45cm. Among 45cm of drill widths. 45kg per ha of nitrogen had most numerous panicles. Panicle length, number of 1st branch, weight of 1,000 grain, and germination of 30 or 45cm of drill width showed better characters than that of 15cm. Seed yield was not statistical different among the treatments but was some more in 30cm of drill width, and was tended not to be different among nitrogen levels. Therefore, considering lodging tolerances, seed yield components, and mechanizations, treatment with 45cm of drill width including 45kg per ha of nitrogen in early spring was better than other treatments for orchardgrass seed production.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the forage yield and quality potential of Festulolium braunii (Festuca pratensis Huds. $\times$ Lolium multiflotum Lam) as forage source in Korea. The experimental design was a split plot design with four replications from Feb. 1994 to Jan. 1996 at Hohenheim uniwrsity. Main plots were three forage species {Fesruca pratensis(Cosmos), Lolium mult~~orum(Lemtal) and Festulolium braunii(Pau1ita)) and subplots were three N levels (150,300 and 450kgha). No differences in dry matter(DM) yields were noted between Festulolium braunii and Lolium multj7orum, but DM yields for Festulolium braunii was 138 more than for Fesruca prafensis(P<0.01 ). Total DM yields over all species increased linearly with increasing N levels. The peak of DM yields over 2 years mean at 450kglha N levels were higher for Lolium mulriJotum(l5,724kg) than for Festulolium braunii(14,730kg) and for Festuca pratensis(l3,68 l kg) (P<0.01). OMD, ME, NEL and other minerals of Fesrulolium braunii were slightly higher and CP, Ca and Mg slightly lower than thsoe of Fesruca pratensis, but CP, OMD, NEL and minerals were absolutly higher for Fesrulolium braunii than for Lolium mulriflorum(P<0.01). It appears that Festulolium braunii has higher potential for improvement of the forage quality than Fesruca prarensis or Lolium rnulrijlorum. The content of CP, CF and minerals were increased, wherease OMD, ME and NEL were decreased in all species with increasing N levels. Yields of CP, DOM and NEL over 2 yean mean were increased in all species with increasing N levels. CP, DOM and NEL yields of Festulolium braunii were higher than those of Lolium multiflorum or Festuca pratensis(P

This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Festulolium braunii(Festuca pratensis Huds. $\times$ Loliurn mulrijZorum Lam.)as forge sources. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with four replications from Feb. 1995. to Jan. 1996 at Hohenheim university. Main plots consisted of three forage species, Festulolirtrn braunii(Paulita), Lolium multiJomm(Lemtla), and Secale cereale(Halo) and subplots consisted of three maturity, boot, heading, and anthesis. The growth characteristics, DM yields, nutritive value, N and energy balance were observed. The heading date of Festulolium braunii was about two days earlier than that of Loliunz mrtltiflorum, farthermore Fesrulolium braunii retained higher leaf weight ratio(LWR) than other species. Festulolium brarrnii failed to show any significant differences in grass length, number of tillers, LAI, CGR, and DM accumulation when harvested at the same stage of maturity as compare with Loliurn mulriiflorutn or Setale cerede, bur the content of CP, OMD, and mineral elements and NEL value of Festulolium braunii compare to othes were slightly increased(P<0.05), while the content of NDF, ADF, and lignin decreased(P<0.05). The yield of CP was greater for Festulolium braunii than for Lolium multfimm and yields of DOM and NEL per unit area(ha) for Festulolium braunii were greater than for other species(P<0.05). The equivalent or higher DM production and nutritive value are obtained when Festulolium braunii are cut during the period from boot to anthesis stages, therefor DM intake, preference, and N and energy balance were also higher for Festulolirtm braunii compare to for other species. It could be suggested that Lolium multrfirum would be a more suitable substitute to Festuloliron braunii without decreasing forage production and quality, but the substitutive effect of Secale cereale would be difficult because of the maor differences in growth type and period compare to Fesrulolium braunii. From above the results of this experiment it appears that Festulolium braunii have a potential to provide forage sources. but funher research is needed to ascertain their potential under the climate of Korea.
The objectives of this research were to investigate the system of rice intensification (SRI) on early growth, grain yield, and yield components under Chinese milk vetch residue-mulched no-tillage cropping systems at silt loam soil. The field was prepared as a split-plot design with three replications, main plots consisted of Dongjinbyeo, and Sobibyeo as a cultivar, and subplots consisted of $10{\times}10$ cm, $20{\times}20$ cm, and $30{\times}30$ cm as a planting density. Weed infestation during rice growing season was more severe in wider planting density $30{\times}30$ at 35 days after transplanting (DAT), and $20{\times}20$ cm at 95 DAT in both Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo. The maximum plant height was recorded in Sobibyeo compared with Dongjinbyeo, $10{\times}10$ cm and $20{\times}20$ cm planting density compared with $30{\times}30$ cm from 20 DAT until 60 DAT. Among the three planting densities, SPAD values were significantly greater in planting density of $20{\times}20$ cm both in Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo followed by $30{\times}30$ cm compared with closer planting density of $10{\times}10$ cm. The lowest grain yield was observed in wider planting density of $30{\times}30$ in both Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo due to lower number of panicle per unit area. Our findings suggest that optimum planting density for SRI in no-tillage paddy was $20{\times}20$ cm and it should be useful the systems to small-scale rice farmers in Korea as a sustainable farming system.

These experiment was conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer levels and mixture small grains on productivity and quality of spring forage rape at south region of Korea(Mokpo). The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of three different levels of nitrogen fertilizer(100, 150 and 200 kg/ha). The sub plots consisted of five kinds of mixed small grain species(Rye, Oat, Barley, Italian ryegrass, and Rape monoculture). The results obtained are summarized as follow. Dry matter(DM) content of Rye + Rape and Ba.ley + Rape mixtures were increased by $2\~3\%$ compared to Rape monoculture. The high level of nitrogen application increased the fresh matter yield, and yield of Rye + Rape and Rape monoculture were higher than that of others. Dry matter yield of Rye + Rape mixture and Rape monoculture with 200kg/ha of nitrogen application were higher by 9,449 and 9,227 kg/ha, respectively. The crude protein(CP) content of rape was high as $18.6\%$ while average CP content was $16\%$. The average total digestible nutrient(TDN) content showed high as $70\%$. It is suggested the Rye + Rape mixture or Rape monoculture would recommendable for spring usage of rape at south region of Korea.

In order to study the effect of barley, Italian ryegrass (IRG), and legume mixture on nitrogen fixation and transfer to grasses on spring paddy field, an experiment was carried out from Oct. 2006 to June 2007 in Naju, Korea. A split plot design with three replications was used for the experiment. One reference plot was assigned for each treatment to determine nitrogen fixation. Main plots consisted of Chinese milk vetch, crimson clover, forage pea, and hairy vetch with barley, respectively. Subplot treatment were barley or IRG with four seeding ratio of legumes (50:50, 60:40, 70:30, and 80:20). To estimate N fixation by legumes, $^{15}N$ isotope dilution technique was used. $^{15}N$ fertilizer [$(^{15}NH_4)_2SO_4$ solution at 99.8 atom N] was uniformly applied to $600cm^2$ in the middle of each plot on April 15, 2007. Plots were harvest by hand on June 8, 2007. Dried sample were ground to a fine power and analyzed for total N isotope N. $^{15}N$ was determined using elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The calculation of N transfer was determined with the isotope dilution method. The content of N was higher in legumes than that in barley or Italian ryegrass. Nitrogen level in forage pea was significantly higher than that of other legumes. There were significantly differences in N content between legumes in IRG mixture. Atom % $^{15}N$ excess was significantly different in legumes with barley. The 60:40 sub plot had higher (p<0.05) atom % $^{15}N$ than other seeding ratio treatments. The enrichment ranged from 0 to 0.58. Compared to barley, the enrichment of IRG with its accompanied legumes was higher, ranging from 0.38 to 1.0. The N derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) ranged from 0% to 49.5% with barley-legume mixture. It ranged from 0 to 60.5% in IRG-legume plots. N transfer from legumes to neighboring grasses was 12.3 to 90.9 kg/ha for barley-legume mixture and 31.7 to 107.8 kg/ha for IRG plots. IRG plots showed higher N transfer for IRG-legume mixture in general based on difference method. Based on $^{15}N$ dilution method, the N transfer was 0 to 36.1 kg/ha for barley-legume mixture and 0 to 50.6 kg/ha for IRG plots. There was a tendency toward higher N transfer on the difference method than that of the $^{15}N$ dilution method.

This experiment was conducted at Sancheong from 2013 to 2015. The objective of this study was to establish the seeding rate, and to clarify the optimum nitrogen fertilizer level for rye seed production in the southern area of Korea. We employed Korean rye cultivar 'Gogu' in this test. The experimental design was a split-plot design with three replications. A split-plot design was used with three seeding levels (3, 5, and 7 kg 10 a-1) on the main plots and other treatments fully randomized in sub-plots. A factorial arrangement of treatments included three different nitrogen fertilizer levels (0, 3, 6, and 9 kg 10 a-1). The grain yields of rye affected by increasing the seeding rate. The number of spike per m2 and immature grain weight was increasing, while the fertility rate and the number of grain per spike were decreased as seeding rate were increased from 3 kg 10 a-1 to 7 kg 10 a-1. The percentage of a productive tiller, 1-liter weight, and 1000-grain weight also decrease by increasing seeding but the grain yields of rye had less effect. There was an increase in the number of spike per m2, the number of grain per spike, and grain yields as nitrogen fertilizer level was increased from 0 kg 10 a-1 to 9 kg 10 a-1 and followed a delaying heading and an increasing lodging of the plant. But grain yields did not affected by the interaction of seeding rate × nitrogen fertilizer levels. The best seeding rate and nitrogen fertilizer level for rye seed production were 5 kg and 3 kg 10 a-1, respectively, considering seed and fertilizer reduction and the prevention of pollution by excess fertilization.
