  • This paper treated a new method that generates the dipole magnetic field for high speed machines by using Halbach array, which was suggested by Klaus Halbach. The Halbach array can produce the various field distribution without magnetic materials. Therefore, the iron losses can be reduced. This paper presented the magnetic characteristics on both linear and cylindrical Halbach array. And the Halbach array for dipole field was manufactured with Nd-Fe-B magnets having 1.17(T), the measured flux density was compared the theoretical values acquired by three dimensional FEM analysis. Finally, the magnetic characteristics of Halbach array were compared with those of other conventional dipole field systems.

  • This paper analyses a deterministic scheduling problem concerned with manufacturing multiple types of components at a pre-assembly stage composed of parallel fabrication machines. Each component part is machined on a fabrication machine specified in advance. The manufactured components are subsequently assembled into products. The completion time of a job(product) is measured by the latest completion time of its all components at the pre-assembly stage. The problem has the objective measure of minimizing the total weighted completion time of a finite number of jobs. Two lower bounds are derived and tested in a branch-and-bound scheme. Also, three constructive heuristic algorithms are developed based on the machine aggregation and greedy strategies. Some empirical evaluation of the performance of the proposed branch-and-bound and heuristic algorithms are also performed.

  • The main aim of this paper is to study effects of different voltage sags and their intensity on the behavior of induction motors using a simulation approach. For this purpose, necessary simulation was done in Matlab - Simulink first. Then, to ensure-reasonable accuracy of the simulation, some results of the simulation were compared with the corresponding results measured in the laboratory. Then effects of intensity of symmetric voltage sag (three phase) and its starting point on the behavior of small and large induction motors was studied using simulation and subsequently, the effects of asymmetric voltage sags (single phase and two phase) has also been studied and finally the conclusion of the study was presented.

  • This paper presents the performance analysis of a sliding mode based hybrid controller for three phase voltage source inverter. The main objective of this analysis is to observe the effectiveness of the controller for fault ride through (FRT) capability improvement of the distributed generations (DG). The performance of the conventional PI based cascaded controller is also presented for comparison purpose.

  • Power converter plays a very important role in switched reluctance motor (SRM) systems, and it is also the easiest one to experience failures. Power converter faults will cause the motor to run in non equilibrium states, and a long time fault operation will lead to motor and other modules damaged, and make the system completely lose working stability. This paper uses an asymmetric bridge converter as the research object with three-phase SRM, employs the wavelet packet decomposition for the phase currents. It analyzes and studies the short circuit fault condition of IGBT, uses an energy discrete degree of the wavelet packet nodes as the fault characteristic, and conducts the corresponding experimental and simulation analysis to verify the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method.

  • This paper performs two kinds of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for dual three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (DTP-PMSM).The first is based on vector space decomposition to study the effect of current harmonics on electromechanical energy conversion. And the second presents the coupling relations between two sets of windings using two d-q transformation. And then this paper has deeply studied the differences between these two strategies, the different effect on the control of harmonic current and the reason for these differences. MATLAB-based Simulation studies of a 3KW DTP-PMSM are carried out to verify the analysis of differences between the two FOC strategies.

  • In this paper, a load balancing problem among operators is considered, when one or more identical machines can be assigned to an operator. The operations of a job are separated into three categories : machine-controlled elements, operator-controlled elements and machine/operator-controlled elements. Machining or forming operations are included into the first category. The second category includes inspection and moving to another machine, and the last category includes setup and loading/unloading operation. The objective is to balance the workloads among operators under the constraints of available machine-time and operator-time. A hierarchical heuristic solution procedure is suggested for allocating jobs to each machine and allocating machines to each operator. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated with various data set.

  • This paper describes the restructuring of power electronics and electric drives courses, sponsored by NSF, EPRI, NASA and the local utilities, which has significantly increased student enthusiasm, and the undergraduate enrollment in these courses at the University of Minnesota has tripled since 1997. The developed leaching approaches have been the subject of NSF-sponsored faculty workshops in 1994, 1997, 1998,2002, and 2003. In power electronics, the power-pole based building-block approach unifies analysis and control aspects of all converters. PSpice-based simulations aid in analysis and design, supported by a hardware laboratory. For electric drives, an integrative approach addressing all three aspects of electric drives - machines, power converters and control is being. used. Space vectors, introduced on a physical basis rather than purely mathematical ions, are used fur analysis of ac machines. This leads to a more physical understanding of machine operation and also makes it easier to address control aspects in the advanced course. The lecture materials are supported by a DSP-based laboratory.

  • Corporate credit rating analysis has drawn a lot of research interests in previous studies, and recent studies have shown that machine learning techniques achieved better performance than traditional statistical ones. This paper applies support vector machines (SVMs) to the corporate credit rating problem in an attempt to suggest a new model with better explanatory power and stability. To serve this purpose, the researcher uses a grid-search technique using 5-fold cross-validation to find out the optimal parameter values of kernel function of SVM. In addition, to evaluate the prediction accuracy of SVM, the researcher compares its performance with those of multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), case-based reasoning (CBR), and three-layer fully connected back-propagation neural networks (BPNs). The experiment results show that SVM outperforms the other methods.

  • Cloud computing has drastically reduced the price of computing resources through the use of virtualized resources that are shared among users. However, the established large cloud data centers have a large carbon footprint owing to their excessive power consumption. Inefficiency in resource utilization and power consumption results in the low fiscal gain of service providers. Therefore, data centers should adopt an effective resource-management approach. In this paper, we present a novel load-balancing framework with the objective of minimizing the operational cost of data centers through improved resource utilization. The framework utilizes a modified genetic algorithm for realizing the optimal allocation of virtual machines (VMs) over physical machines. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework improves the resource utilization by up to 45.21%, 84.49%, 119.93%, and 113.96% over a recent and three other standard heuristics-based VM placement approaches.
