PCR-Based Determination of the Prevalence of Common Venereal Bacterial Pathogens in Breeding Thoroughbreds of South Korea

  • Taylorella equigenitalis (T. equigenitalis), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) are sexually transmittable bacteria known to cause venereal diseases (VD) in horses. T. equigenitalis causes contagious equine metritis (CEM), which is a considerable concern for equine breeding industry. K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa may cause endometritis and infertility in susceptible mares. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of these bacteria among breeding Thoroughbreds in South Korea. External genital swabs were collected from 178 breeding Thoroughbreds, including 11 stallions and 167 mares. The samples were tested using a commercial multiplex real-time PCR kit. T. equigenitalis, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumoniae were present in 5.6%, 7.3%, and 5.6% of tested Thoroughbreds, respectively. The results highlight the need for regular testing of South Korean Thoroughbreds, particularly those used for breeding, for these bacteria. The regular pre-breeding test for these bacteria will prevent health complications for the horse and financial losses for the owner as a result of VD.

말에서 국내산 이탈리안 라이그라스 사일리지의 수입산 티모시 건초 대체 효과 (Replacement of Imported Timothy Hay with Domestic Italian Ryegrass Silage in a Horse Feedstuff)

  • 본 연구는 수입산 티모시 건초(TH)를 국내산 이탈리안 라이그라스 사일리지(IRGS)로 대체할 목적으로, 말에서 급여사료 중 TH 대신 IRGS의 대체급여 가능성을 사료품질, 영양소소화율 및 사료가격 측면에서 검토하였다. 실험 처리는 공시동물에게 급여 사료 중 TH를 급여한 대조구와 TH대신 IRGS를 대체 급여한 처리구로 하였다. 소화실험은 한국마사회 원당종마목장의 더러브렛 6두(평균체중 475.7±33.3kg)로 대조구와 처리구에 각 3두를 배치하여 전분채취법으로 수행하였다. 사료성분과 상대적사료가치(RFV)는 IRGS가 TH보다 높았으며 IRGS의 발효품질도 양호하여 말의 풀사료로 충분히 이용할 수 있는 것으로 생각된다. 영양소소화율, 가소화에너지총량(TDN) 및 가소화에너지(DE)은 대조구와 처리구 간의 차이가 없어(p>0.05) TH를 IRGS로 대체 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 총급여사료 중 TH와 IRGS의 사료비는 IRGS가 TH 보다 53.7~62.4%로 현저히 절감되는 것으로 나타나 사료비 절감 측면에서도 IRGS가 유리하였다. 이상에서 IRGS는TH와 영양소소화율, TDN함량 및 DE에서 차이가 없고 사료성분, RFV 및 사료비 측면에서 유리하여 수입산 TH를 충분히 대체할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

말에서 Granulosa Cell Tumor에 의한 무발정 치료 예 (Surgical Treatment for Granulosa Cell Tumor in a Thoroughbred Mare)

  • An 8-year-old Thoroughbred mare showing anestrus for longer than 6 months with left ovarian mass was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. For 6 months, the mare had received 2 times hormonal therapies with $PGF_2{\alpha}$ and progesterone. The mare had not responded to these therapies and not shown estrous behavior. On rectal palpation, the left ovary was enlarged and contralateral ovary was small and inactive. Transrectal ultrasonographic examination of the left ovary revealed a mass composed of multiple, irregularly shaped follicles. Granulosa cell tumor (GCT) was suspected according to her history. Ovariectomy was performed through the left flank laparotomy with a standing position in a simple chute located outside of horse farm. The mass was diagnosed as GCT on histopathology. The mare was recovered without any problem and became pregnant next spring.

경주마에서 와이어와 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 합성충진제를 사용한 제측열제의 치료 1례 (Successful Treatment of Quarter Crack Using Wiring and Polymethylmethacrylate Composites in a Thoroughbred Racehorse)

  • A 4-year-old Thoroughbred stallion was referred to J&C Equine Hospital with a quarter crack of the right front foot. On visual inspection, there was a medial quarter crack with laminar necrosis. The first step to treat this problem was to remove the necrotized tissue around the crack using Dremel tools, disinfecting crack, administering antibiotics through regional limb perfusion and systemically administering antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs consistently. After one month's anti-inflammatory management, the quarter crack was treated successfully using two series of wiring with one week's term and polymethylmethacrylate composites (Equilox). After treatment, this racehorse successfully resumed training and racing in Korea Racing Authority Seoul Race Course, and won three times, finishing second and third place once, out of thirteen starts.

Efficiency of Equilume light mask on the resumption of early estrous cyclicity and ovulation in Thoroughbred mares

  • Equilume light masks had no impact on hastening the resumption of estrous cyclicity in mares maintained in outdoor pastures on the mainland of Korea due to the cold weather conditions. Jeju Island is a major horse-breeding site in Korea and is warmer than the mainland during the winter season. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to explore the efficiency of the Equilume light mask on the resumption of seasonal estrous cycles in Thoroughbred mares on Jeju Island. A total of 20 nonpregnant mares were randomly divided into the Equilume light mask (n = 9) and stable lighting (n =11) groups. The experiment was performed at seven different horse-breeding farms located on Jeju Island from November 15, 2020, to February 15, 2021. The mares were exposed to the respective lights from 16:00 to 23:00. Follicle size and uterine edema were measured by ultrasound scanning. Body condition scores (BCS) were also monitored during the experiment. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SAS and SPSS software, and p-values of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Two of the nine (22.2%) mares in the Equilume light mask group and three of the 11 (27.28%) mares in the stable lighting group were still cycling in December and January, which were considered as all-year-round cycling mares. On February 15, there was no difference between groups in the resumption of early seasonal estrus cycle, which was determined by follicles > 25 mm in addition to uterine edema. All mares in the Equilume light mask group and five of the eight mares (62.5%) in the stable lighting group had resumed cycling. Interestingly, six of the seven mares (87.5%) in the Equilume light mask and four of eight mares (50%) in the stable lighting group had already ovulated on February 15 (p > 0.05), as determined by the presence of a recent corpus luteum. No difference was observed in BCS and uterine edema between groups (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the Equilume light mask can be an effective approach to induce early seasonal estrus cycles of mares in Jeju Island, and it also enhances the efficiency of farm management by reducing labor.

Microsatellite DNA를 이용한 말 집단의 유전적 특성 및 유연 관계 (Genetic Relationship and Characteristics Using Microsatellite DNA Loci in Horse Breeds.)

  • 말 6개 품종 192두를 대상으로 17개의 microsatellite DNA marker를 이용하여 유전자(DNA)형을 분석하여 비교한 결과 제주마에서 각 marker별로 대립유전자의 수는 5-10개(평균 7.35개)로 분포하였고 제주마에서 관찰된 대립유전자는 총 125개가 관찰되어 평균 좌위 당 7.35개로서 몽고마의 130개(평균 7.65개)보다는 낮은 수치였다. 또한 AHT5 marker에서 대립유전자 P, ASB23 marker에서 대립유전자 Q와 R, CA425 marker에서 대립유전자 H, HMS3 marker에서 대립유전자 S, HTG10 marker에서 대립유전자 J, LEX3 marker에서 대립유전자 J 등 6개 marker에서 7개의 특이 대립유전자가 관찰되었다. 관찰된 이형접합성(observed heterozygosity)과 기대된 이형접합성(expected heterozygosity)은 각각 0.429-0.905(평균 0.703)와 0.387-0.841(평균 0.702)로 관찰되었고 다량정보량(PIC)은 0.354(HTG6)-0.816(LEX3)로서 평균 0.659로 나타났으며 17개 marker중 AHT4, AHT5, CA425, HMS2, HMS3, HTG10, LEX3, VHL20 marker 등이 다량정보량(PIC) 0.7 이상을 나타내었다. 17개 marker에 대한 전체 부권부정율(친부마 혹은 친모마 하나의 유전자형을 알고 있을 경우)을 제주마에 적용 시 99.99%로 나타났다. 말 6개 품종별로 분석하였을 때 평균 대립유전자의 수는 7.64개(몽고마)-4.23개(미니츄어 말)로 분포하였고 17개 marker 전체에서는 153개의 대립유전자가 검출되었다. 품종별로 분석한 결과 기대된 이형접합성(expected heterozygosity)과 관찰된 이형접합성(observed heterozygosity)은 각각 0.7950$\pm$0.0141(몽고마)-0.6751$\pm$0.0378(미니츄어 말), 0.7135$\pm$0.0180(제주경주마)-0.5621$\pm$0.0401(미니츄어 말)로 나타났다. 말 6개 품종을 17개 microsatellite marker로 분석한 결과 몽고마, 제주마, 제주경주마 등의 순으로 높은 유전적 다양성을 보였다. 제주마와 가장 가까운 유전적 유연 관계를 나타낸 집단은 몽고마로서 Da genetic distance에서 0.1517로 나타났고, 제주경주마와는 0.2628의 유전적 거리를 보였다.

Treatment of Surgical Site Infection and Delayed Union in Fetlock Arthrodesis of a Mare

  • A 6-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented to the Korea Racing Authority Equine Hospital with dropping of the left front fetlock due to an injury sustained while racing. Radiographic examination revealed a comminuted fracture of both proximal sesamoid bones of the affected fetlock. Arthrodesis of the fetlock joint using a broad dynamic compression plate with a tension band wire was performed as a salvage procedure for the future use as a broodmare. After surgery, however, a delayed union of the bones and surgical site infection was present for a prolonged period. Staphylococcus aureus was persistently identified from the surgical site, and antimicrobial therapies were based on antibiotic sensitivity tests, including regional perfusions. The removal and replacement of surgical implants associated with seropurulent discharge was based on coordinating the development of fetlock ankylosis and infection control over 13 months. Firstly, seven screws associated with surgical drainage were replaced and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and local antibiotics were placed into the surgical site to accelerate bone fusion at postoperative month 7. Further six screws, along with drainage, were removed at postoperative month 10. The plate and screws were removed from the limb due to the progression of bone fusion at postoperative month 13; BMP-2 and local antibiotics were also used. Delayed healing of arthrodesis due to surgical site infection and implant instability were treated by implant removals and antibiotic therapies, and the horse eventually showed improved weight-bearing ability of the affected limb.

말의 흉추골유합과 요추골변형의 1례 (A case of fused thoracic vertebrae and deformity of the lumbar vertebrae in equine)

  • The fused thoracic vertebra and deformity of the lumbar vertebrae in the female Thoroughbred horse were observed macroscopically. The 11th and 12th thoracic vertebrae (T) were partially fused. They were composed of three parts between the spinous process of the 11th and 12th T, left and right caudal articular processes of the 11th T, and left and right cranial articular processes of the 12th T. The vertical surface of cranial articular process of the 11th T and left mamillary process of the 12th T were absent. The left caudal part of the transverse process of the 12th T and left costal fovea of the transverse process of the 12th T were severely deformed. On the other hand, the left transverse process of the first lumbar vertebra (L) was a typical rib-like transverse process and two times longer than the right transverse process of the 2nd L. The right transverse process of 4th L has an oval concave facet on the medial part of caudal border for articulation with the right transverse process of 5th L; the latter has a corresponding convex facet on the medial part of the cranial border in the right transverse process of the 5th L.
