  • We have studied on the effect of the operation voltage according to the reverse twist for the different fringe field switching (FFS) structure. The FFS structure with a vertically patterned edge of the pixel electrode (VPP) has lower operation voltage comparing to the one with a horizontally patterned edge of the pixel electrode (HPP). The reason is like that the number of the pattern of the pixel edge for the VPP structure is one third comparing with the HPP structure and thus, there is small reverse twist area for the VPP structure. Actually, the reverse twist disturbs the twist of LC near adjacent active area, result that LCs near there have the unstable dynamics. That is, the operation voltage increases as the reverse twist area increases. Therefore, it is very important to design pixel electrode with a small reverse twist region for the FFS mode.

  • An electrochemical study related to the electroreduction of 4-amino-6-methyl-3-thio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one(I), 6-methyl-3-thio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one(II), and 2,4-dimetoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine(III) in dimethylformamide at glassy carbon electrode has been performed. A variety of electrochemical techniques, such as differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry, and coulometry were employed to clarify the mechanism of the electrode process. The compounds I and II with thiol group exhibited similar redox behavior. Both displayed two cathodic peaks, whereas the third compound, III, without thiol group showed only one cathodic peak in the same potential range of the second peak of I and II. The results of this study suggest that in the first step the one electron reduction of thiol produced a disulfide derivative and in the second reduction step the azomethane in the triazine ring was reduced in two electron processes. A reduction mechanism for all three compounds is proposed on this basis. In addition, some numerical constants, such as diffusion constant, transfer coefficient, and rate constant of coupled chemical reaction in the first reduction peak were also reported.

  • In this paper, 3rd overtone mode energy-trapped filter using modified PbTiO$_3$ system ceramics was manufactured to apply for intermediate frequency(IF) SMD type fillet with splitted electrode and gap size. To investigate the effects of splitted electrode and gap size on filter characteristics of 3rd overtone mode energy-trapped filter, ceramic wafers were fabricated by etching splitted rectangular electrode size(b$\times$d) of b=0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1mm, d=0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6mm and gap size(c) c=0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6mm, respectively. And then, SMD type ceramic filter were fabricated with the size of 3.7$\times$3.1$\textrm{mm}^2$. SMD type ceramic filter with the size of b=0.8mm, d=0.4mm and gap(c)=0.4mm, which showed insertion loss of 2.951dB, 3dB bandwidth of 54.7kHz and 20dB stop bandwidth of 129.27kHz, was suitable for IF bandpass filter application.

  • Polymer thick film capacitors were successfully fabricated by using ink-jet printing and screen printing technology. First, a bottom electrode was patterned by ink-jet printing of a nano-sized silver ink. Next, a dielectric layer was formed by the screen printing, then a top electrode was pattern by ink-jet printing of a nano-sized silver ink. The printed area of the dielectric layers were changed into $2{\times}2m^2$and $4{\times}2m^2$, and also the area of the electrodes were patterned with $1{\times}1mm^2$ and $1{\times}3mm^2$. The thickness of the printed dielectric layer was ranged from 1.1 to $1.4{\mu}m$. The analysis of capacitances verified that the capacitances was proportional to the area of the printed electrode. The capacitances of the fabricated capacitors resulted in one third of the calculated capacitances.

  • Compound semiconductor/CNTs composites have shown considerably improved efficiency improvement in photovoltaic devices, which is often attributed to two different factors. One is the formation of efficient electronic energy cascade structures. The other effect of CNTs on the performance of photovoltaic devices is the decrement of interfacial resistance. The interfacial resistances at n-type/ p-type materials and/or n-type materials/TCO electrode are reduced by an outstanding electrical property of CNTs. In addition to the effects of CNTs, we report the third reason for increment of efficiency in photovoltaic devices by CNT's well-known electrical field enhancement effects. The improved ${\beta}$ values in reverse-FE currents of CIGS electrode with SWNTs layers indicate the enhancement of electrical field in photovoltaic devices, which implies the acceleration of the electron transfer rate in the cell. Due to the formation of an efficient electronic energy cascade structure and the decrease of the interfacial resistance as well as the improvement of the electrical field in the photovoltaic devices, the power conversion efficiency of electrochemically deposited superstrate-type CIGS solar cells was increased 24.3% in the presence of SWNTs and showed 10.40% conversion efficiency.

  • This paper describes a type of piezoelectric transformer with improved design principles. It consists of a thin rectangular piezoelectric ceramic plate having two input electrodes and one output electrode. The length of each input and output electrode is nearly one third of that of piezoelectric transformer itself. In the driving section, the ceramic plate is poled in the thickness direction reversely with each other, and has electrodes on both main faces. The electric input near its fundamental resonance frequency is applied to the driving section in parallel and the output voltage from the generating section is connected to the resistor load. Its equivalent circuit is derived from the Mason\`s model. The frequency characteristics near the resonance frequency under no load have been investigated. Moreover, using this piezoelectric transformer we measured the LCD backlight characteristics.

  • In this paper, a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), one of the representative third-generation solar cells with eco-friendly materials and processes compared to other solar cells, was modeled using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation was conducted by designating values of series resistance, parallel resistance, light absorption coefficient, and thin film electrode thickness, which are directly related to the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells, as arbitrary experimental values. In order to analyze the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells, the optimal value among each parameter experimental value related to efficiency was found using formulas for fill factor (FF) and conversion efficiency.

  • Direct electron transfer of hemoglobin (Hb) in the chitosan (CTS) and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (nano-$TiO_2$) composite films was achieved by using a room temperature ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ($BMIMPF_6$) modified carbon paste electrode (CILE) as the basal electrode. UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that Hb in the film retained the native structure. Electrochemical investigation indicated that a pair of well-defined quasi-reversible redox peaks of Hb heme Fe(III)/Fe(II) was obtained with the formal potential located at -0.340 V (νs. SCE) in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The electrochemical parameters such as the electron transfer coefficient (α), the electron transfer number (n) and the standard electron transfer rate constant ($k_s$) were got as 0.422, 0.93 and 0.117 $s^{-1}$, respectively. The fabricated CTS/nano-$TiO_2$/Hb/CILE showed good electrocatalytic ability to the reduction of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which exhibited a potential application in fabricating a new kind of third generation biosensor.

  • In the present work, the operating parameters were optimized using Box Behnken Design (BBD) in response surface methodology (RSM) to maximize the hydrogen production rate (R1) and hydrogen production rate per unit watt consumed (R2) of a proton exchange membrane electrolysis cell (PEMEC), a third response (R3) which was the sum of the scaled values of R1 and R2 were selected to be maximized so that both hydrogen production rate and hydrogen production rate per unit watt consumed could be maximized. The major parameters which were influencing the experiment for enhancing the output responses were oxygen electrode/anode electrocatalyst loading (A), current supplied (B) and water inlet temperature (C). The commercial proton exchange membrane Nafion® was used as the electrolyte. The acetylene black carbon (CAB) supported IrO2 was used as the electrocatalyst for preparing oxygen electrode/anode whereas commercial Pt (40 wt%)/CHSA was used as the H2 electrode/cathode electrocatalyst. The quadratic model was developed to predict the output/ responses and their proximity to the experimental output values. The developed model was found to be significant as the P values for both the responses were < 0.0001 and F values were greater than 1. The optimum condition for both the responses were O2 electrode/anode electrocatalyst loading of 1.78 mg/cm2, supplied current of 0.33 A and water inlet temperature of 54℃. The predicted values for hydrogen production rate (R1) and hydrogen production rate per unit watt consumed (R2) were 2.921 mL/min and 2.562 mL/(min·W), respectively obtained from the quadratic model. The error % between the predicted response values and experimental values were 1.47% and 3.08% for R1 and R2, respectively. This model predicted the optimum conditions reasonably in good agreement with the experimental conditions for the enhancement of the output responses of the developed PEM based electrolyser.

  • Cooling systems for electronic equipments are becoming more important. Cooling technologies using natural and forced convection are limited and operated in very low efficiency. A corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for anair pump, which allows for airflow generation with low noise and no moving parts. However they do not enhance the flow rate and overcome the control mechanism of the pump. In this study a point-mesh type air pump, with a third electro de installed near the corona point, has been proposed and investigated by focusing on elevating the ionic wind velocity and power yield. As a result, the significantly enhanced ionic wind velocity and tremendously increased power yield can be obtained with the proposed air pump system.
