  • The structural feasibility of a variety of non-conventional sludge digesters, in the form of thin shells of revolution constructed in concrete, has formed the subject of investigation of a recent programme of research at the University of Cape Town. Such forms are usually known in the literature as "egg-shaped", and the advantages of these over conventional digesters of the wide-cylindrical type are now well-recognised: superior mixing efficiency, less accumulation of deposits at the bottom, easier removal of bottom deposits and surface crust, reduced heat losses, and so forth. With the aim of exploring the structural feasibility of various non-conventional forms for concrete sludge digesters, and making available usable analytical data and practical guidelines for the design of such thin shell structures, a number of theoretical studies have recently been undertaken, and these have covered conical assemblies, spherical assemblies and parabolic ogival configurations. The purpose of the present paper is to bring together the different analytical approaches employed in each of these studies, summarise the main findings in each case, draw comparisons among the various studied configurations with regard to structural efficiency and functional suitability, and make appropriate conclusions and recommendations.

  • A new simple 3-node triangular flat-shell element with standard nodal DOF (6 DOF per node) is proposed for the linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of very thin to thick plate and shell structures. The formulation of element GT9 (Long and Xu 1994), a generalized conforming membrane element with rigid rotational freedoms, is employed as the membrane component of the new shell element. Both one-point reduced integration scheme and a corresponding stabilization matrix are adopted for avoiding membrane locking and hourglass phenomenon. The bending component of the new element comes from a new generalized conforming Kirchhoff-Mindlin plate element TSL-T9, which is derived in this paper based on semiLoof constrains and rational shear interpolation. Thus the convergence can be guaranteed and no shear locking will happen. Furthermore, a simple hybrid procedure is suggested to improve the stress solutions, and the Updated Lagrangian formulae are also established for the geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results with solutions, which are solved by some other recent element models and the models in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, are presented. They show that the proposed element, denoted as GMST18, exhibits excellent and better performance for the analysis of thin-think plates and shells in both linear and geometrically nonlinear problems.

  • Shell finite elements are widely used for the analysis of thin section objects such as sheet metal parts, automobile bodies and et al. due to their computational efficiency. Since many of input data for finite element analysis are given as solid models or triangulated surface models, one should extract midsurface information from these input data initially and then construct shell meshes on the extracted midsurfaces. In this paper, a method of generating shell elements on midsurfaces directly from input models has been proposed, in which midsurface generating process can be omitted. In order to construct shell meshes, the input models should be triangulated on surfaces first, and then tetrahedral elements are generated by using an advancing front method, and finally mid shell surfaces are obtained from tetrahedral meshes. Some examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.

  • A new three-dimensional thin shell element for a structure containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is Proposed. The assumed strain formulation and the bubble function are introduced to improve the performance of the shell element. A finite element formulation gives a general tool that can predict the static or dynamic responses of the shell with piezoelectric sensor/actuator. The verification through the calculation of the static response for the piezoelectric bimorph beam shows that the results agree with those from the theoretical analysis very well. Dynamic response of a shell shows that the reduction of vibration is possible with the introduction of the piezoelectric shell sensor and actuator. However. the curvature of sensor/actuator is an obstacle for application, since the flexible PVDF is not strong enough and the PZT with curvature should be made specially.

  • As a basic study on the fluid-structure interaction of the shell structure, a theoretical formulation has been suggested on the free vibration of a thin-walled conical frustum shell filled with an ideal fluid, where the shell is assumed to be fixed at both ends. The motion of fluid coupled with the shell is determined by means of the velocity potential flow theory. In order to calculate the normalized natural frequencies that represent the fluid effect on a fluid-coupled system, finite element analyses for a fluid-filled conical frustum shell are carried out. Also, the effect of apex angle on the frequencies is investigated.

  • Active control of nonlinear vibration of stiffened functionally graded (SFG) cylindrical shell is studied in this paper. The system is subjected to axial and transverse periodic loads in the presence of thermal uncertainty. The material composition is considered to be continuously graded in the thickness direction, also these properties depend on temperature. The relations of strain-displacement are derived based on the classical shell theory and the von Kármán equations. For modeling the stiffeners on the cylindrical shell surface, the smeared stiffener technique is used. The Galerkin method is used to discretize the partial differential equations of motion. Some comparisons are made to validate the SFG model. For suppression of the nonlinear vibration, the linear and nonlinear control strategies are applied. For control objectives, the piezoelectric actuator is attached to the external surface of the shell and the thin ring piezoelectric sensor is attached to the middle internal surface of shell. The effect of PID, feedback linearization and sliding mode control on the suppression of vibration for SFG cylindrical shell is presented.

  • In this paper, a new three-dimensional piezoelectric thin shell element containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. The distributed piezoelectric sensor layer monitors the structural shape deformation due to the direct effect and the distributed actuator layer suppresses the deflection via the converse piezoelectric effect. A finite element formulation is presented for static response of laminated shell with piezoelectric sensors/actuators. An eight-node and forty-DOF shell element is built. The performance of the shell elements is improved by reduced integration technique. The static shape control of structure is derived. The shell element is verified by calculating piezoelectric polymeric PVDF bimorph beam. The results agreed with those obtained by theoretical analysis, Tzou and Tseng (1990) and Hwang and Park (1993) fairly well. At last, the static shape control of a paraboloidal antenna is presented.

  • A nine node isoparametric plate bending element is used for bending analysis of laminated composite skew cylindrical shell panels. Both thick and thin shell panels are solved. Rotary inertia and shear deformation are incorporated by considering first order shear deformation theory. The analysis is performed considering shallow shell theory. Both shallow and moderately deep skew cylindrical shells are investigated. Skew cylindrical shell panels having different thickness ratios (h/a), radius to length ratios (R/a), ply angle orientations, number of layers, aspect ratio (b/a), boundary conditions and various loading (concentrated, uniformly distributed, linear varying and doubly sinusoidal varying) conditions are analysed. Various new results are presented.
