Design of the Thermally Conductive Mould to Improve Cooling Characteristics of Injection Mould for a Mouse (마우스 사출성형금형의 냉각 특성 향상을 위한 열전도성 금형 설계)

  • The objective of present research work is to design the heat conductive mould to improve cooling characteristics of the injection mould for a mouse. In order to obtain the high cooling rate of the mould, a heat conductive mould with three different materials was designed. The materials of the base structure, the mid-layer and the molding part of the heat conductive mould were chosen as Cu-Ni alloy (Ampcoloy 940) to improve the heat conductivity of the mould, Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400) to reduce a thermal stress, injection tool steel (P21), respectively. Through the three-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis and the thermal stress analysis, the effects of the geometrical arrangement of each material on the cooling characteristics and the thermal stress distribution were examined. From the results of the analyses, a proper design of the thermal conductive mould was obtained.

Effects of Coating Materials on Fluidity and Temperature Loss of Molten Metals from Runner Systems in Full Moulds.

  • The full mould casting process in one of the newly developed techniques which has many advantages. Unbonded sand mould has been prepared for the major mould and $CO^2$ gas mould has been used occasionally for comparison. Patterns were built up with expanded polystyrene and coated with three different materials. Silica, graphite and zircon were used for the coating layer. The effects on fluidity and temperature loss of molten metals were investigated. The molten metals were Al-5% Si alloy, Cu-30% Zn alloy and gray iron of approximately 4.0% of carbon equivalent. Experimental variables were runner section area, superheat, sprue height, coating materials, coating thickness and apparent density of EPS pattern. The effects of coating materials on fluidity and temperature loss of the molten metals during transient pouring are summarized as follows : As runner section area, superheat and sprue height increased, fluidity increased. Temperature loss decreased as runner section area and sprue height increased. However, reversed effects were observed in the case of superheat increment. The coating materials decreased the fluidity of each alloy in the order of silica, graphite and zircon. Zircon brought to the highest temperature loss among the coating materials used. The fluidity increased in the order gray iron, Cu-30% Zn and Al-5% Si alloy while temperature loss in the reverse order. Especially in case of reduced pressure process, the fluidity was increased apparently. Al-5% Si alloy showed the lowest temperature loss among the alloys. The increment of the apparent density of EPS pattern resulted in the fluidity decrease and temperature loss increase. The relation between fluidity and temperature loss of each alloy can be expressed by the following equation within the coating thickness limit of 0.5-1.5㎜. Structural Evolution of ZnO:Ga Thin Film on Profiled Substrate Grown by Radio Frequency Sputtering

  • Recently, Zinc oxide (ZnO) nano-structures have been received attractive attention because of their outstanding optical and electrical properties. It might be a promising material considered for applications to photonic and electronic devices such as ultraviolet light emitting diode, thin film transistor, and gas sensors. ZnO nano-structures can be typically synthesized by the VLS growth mode and self-assembly. In the VLS growth mode using various growth techniques, the noble metal catalysts such as Au and Sn were used. However, the growth of ZnO nano-structures on nano-crystalline Au seeds using radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering might be explained by the profile coating, i.e. the ZnO nano-structures were a morphological replica of Au seeds. Ga doped ZnO (ZnO:Ga) nano-structures using this concept were synthesized and characterized by XRD, AFM, SEM, and TEM. We found that surface morphology is drastically changed from initial islands to later sun-flower typed nano-structures. We will present the structural evolution of ZnO:Ga nano-structures with increasing the film thickness.

Ultrasonic Vibration and Rheocasting for Refinement of Mg-Zn-Y Alloy Reinforced with LPSO Structure

  • In this work, ultrasonic vibration (UV) and rheo-squeeze casting was first applied on the Mg alloy reinforced with long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure. The semisolid slurry of Mg-Zn-Y alloy was prepared by UV and processed by rheosqueeze casting in succession. The effects of UV, Zr addition and squeeze pressure on microstructure of semisolid Mg-Zn-Y alloy were studied. The results revealed that the synergic effect of UV and Zr addition generated a finer microstructure than either one alone when preparing the slurries. Rheo-squeeze casting could significantly refine the LPSO structure and ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix in $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy without changing the phase compositions or the type of LPSO structure. When the squeeze pressure increased from 0 to 400 MPa, the block LPSO structure was completely eliminated and the average thickness of LPSO structure decreased from 9.8 to $4.3{\mu}m$. Under 400 MPa squeeze pressure, the tensile strength and elongation of the rheocast $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy reached the maximum values, which were 234 MPa and 17.6%, respectively, due to its fine ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix (${\alpha}1-Mg$ and ${\alpha}2-Mg$ grains) and LPSO structure.

  • A new titanium alloy system. Ti-xFe-ySi (x,y=0-4 wt%). was designed and characterized with the point at low cost and high strength for casting applications. Fe improved room and elevated temperature mechanical properties owing to solid solution hardening and beta phase stabilization. Si yielded titanium silicides and Si addition over 1 wt% resulted in poor ductility due to coarse silicide chains at prior beta boundaries. The optimum composition was found to be Ti-4Fe-(0.5-1)Si in the viewpoint of tensile strength and ductility which are comparable to the Ti-6Al-4V. The metal-mould reaction was also examined for Ti-xFe and Ti-xSi binary alloy system. The thickness of surface reaction layer w as not affected significantly with Fe content, while it was decreased with Si content. In the Ti-4Si alloy, no reaction layer was found. The depth of surface hardening layer was about $200\mum$ regardless of the mould materials.

  • The injection-molded plastic parts have many surface defects: warpage, weldline, flowmark, zetting, scratching, shading and so on. As weldline was one of the major surface defects in the case of desktop monitor, warpage and surface shrinkage are the bigger problems of LCD monitor in the pursuit of light weight and thinner thickness of parts. Some measures to improve these defects were introduced in this paper. Based on these, the laboratory work to find out the optimum processing conditions and to get the best parts was repeated injection moulding try-out after reflecting these improvements. The defects of warpage and surface shrinkage was significantly improved after the improvements in the case of the 20.1 inch even if in the 15 and 17inch case the warpage size was a lttle over the allowed specification because of not taking the measure for parts design within the allowable limits from the required specification in the cause of cost down.

A Study of Property F.R.P Structure Strength According to the Direction of Lay-up in the Small Ship (적층 방향에 따른 F.R.P 구조강도특성에 관한 연구)

  • FRP(Fiber glass reinforced plastics) is compound with materials, which are created to combine each other materials, of which nature of mechanical and chemical are different. Even though the weight and the thickness are identic, its physical figure of characteristic changes with consisting of lay-up and work situation. It is also a method of creating after manufacturing of mould. It has feature that manufacturing of FRP runs parallel design of material with design of structure simultaneously. The rule of FRP structure is distinguished from the length of a ship and it is hard to catch the feature of structure mechanics due to identical formula and figure used for it regardless of the shape of a ship or the speed. This studying, basing on a small FRP ship, will show te fundamental data needed to design of structure analysing the feature of intensity with direction, the method of Lay-up, and the characteristic of materials of FRP.

Chemical compatibility of interim material and bonding agent on shear bond strength (임시수복 재료와 본딩제의 화학적 호환성이 전단결합강도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is finding proper bonding agents to be used when adding bis-acryl composite provisional materials. Materials and Methods: Three bonding agents with different chemical compositions were included in this study. Forty disk shaped specimens of bis-acryl composite provisional material were prepared and divided into 4 groups according to the bonding agents. Control group didn't have bonding agent. Through the Teflon mould with 4.0 mm diameter hole with 4.0 mm thickness the same bis-acryl composite provisional material was added on the disks after the surface of each specimen was treated with designated bonding agent according to the manufacturer's instructions. Shear bond test was performed and the fractured surfaces were inspected with a microscope. One-way analysis of variance was conducted and the result was further analysed with Turkey post hoc test at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The highest strength was acquired from the specimens bonded with chemical cure system and it was statistically significant (P < 0.05). This group showed 100% cohesive failures. The lowest bonding strength was recorded from the specimens used conventional light cure bonding agent, and this group's result was similar with the control group. The group used a light cure bonding agent claiming improved compatibility revealed significantly higher bond strength to the traditional light cure bonding agent group in a statistically significant way (P = 0.043). Conclusion: According to the bonding agent used the shear bond strength was significantly affected. Therefore the choice of proper bonding agent is important when hiring a bonding agent to add bis-acryl composite provisional materials.
