  • In order to develop a high voltage insulation material, spherical silicas with two average particle sizes of 5 ${\mu}m$ and 20 ${\mu}m$ were mixed in different mixing ratios (1:0, 0.7:0.3, 0.5:0.5, 0.3:0.7, 0:1) and their total filling content was fixed at 65 wt%. In order to observe the dispersion of the spherical silicas and the interfacial morphology between silica and epoxy matrix, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was used. The electrical insulation breakdown strength was estimated in sphere-plate electrodes with different insulation thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 mm. Electrical insulation breakdown strength decreased with increasing mixing ratio of 5/20 ${\mu}m$ and the thickness dependence of the breakdown strength was also observed. The tensile strength of the neat epoxy was 82.8 MPa as average value and its increased with decreasing particles size and that of epoxy/silica (2 ${\mu}m$) was 107 MPa, which was 130.8% higher value.

  • The laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer of anisotropic fluids in the vicinity of a wedge have been examined with constant surface temperature. The similarity variables found by Falkner and Skan are employed to reduce the stream wise-dependence in the coupled nonlinear boundary layer equations. The numerical solutions are presented using the fourth-order Runge - Kutta method and the distribution of velocity, micro-rotation, shear and couple stresses and temperature across the boundary layer are plotted. These results are also compared with the corresponding flow problems for Newtonian fluid over wedges. It is found that for a constant wedge angle, the skin friction coefficient is lower for micropolar fluid, as compared to Newtonian fluid. For the case of the constant material parameter K, however, the magnitude of velocity for anisotropic fluid is greater than that of Newtonian fluid. The numerical results also show that for a constant wedge angle with a given Prandtl number, Pr = I, the effect of increasing values of K results in increasing thermal boundary layer thickness for anisotropic fluid, as compared with Newtonian fluid. For the case of the constant material parameter K, however, the heat transfer rate for anisotropic fluid is lower than that of Newtonian fluid.

  • Propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed, twin edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate ($\sigma$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edge-flames can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Experimental results are presented for premixed methane/air twin flames in terms of the effects of $\sigma$ on $U_{edge}$. Both low-$\sigma$ and high-$\sigma$ extinction limits were discovered for all mixtures tested. As a result, the domain of edge-flame stability was obtained in terms of heat loss factor and normalized flame thickness, and comparison with the numerical result of other researchers was also made. For low ($CH_4/O_2/CO_2$) and high ($C_{3}H_{8}$/air) Lewis number cases, propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le.

  • The detachment stability characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO jet attached flames were studied. The flame stability was observed while varying the syngas fuel composition, coaxial nozzle diameter and fuel nozzle rim thickness. The detachment stability limit of the syngas single jet flame was found to decrease with increasing mole fraction of carbon monoxide in the fuel. In hydrogen jet flames with coaxial air, the flame detachment stability was found to be independent of the coaxial nozzle diameter. However, velocities of appearance of liftoff and blowout velocities of lifted flames have dependence. At lower fuel velocity range, the critical coaxial air velocity leading to flame detachment increases with increasing fuel jet velocity, whereas at higher fuel velocity range, it decreases. This increasing-decreasing non-monotonic trend appears for all $H_2$/CO syngas compositions (50/50~100/0% $H_2$/CO). To qualitatively understand the flame behavior near the nozzle rim, $OH^*$ chemiluminescence imaging was performed near the detachment limit conditions. For all fuel compositions, local extinction on the rim is observed at lower fuel velocities(increasing stability region), while local flame extinction downstream of the rim is observed at higher fuel velocities(decreasing stability region). Maximum values of the non-monotonic trends appear to be identical when the fuel jet velocity is normalized by the critical fuel velocity obtained in the single jet cases.

  • We report the space charge and the surface potential of the interface between metal and copper(Ⅱ)-phthalocyanine(CuPc) thin films by measuring the microwave reflection coefficients S/sub 11/ of thin films using a near-field scanning microwave microscope(NSMM). CuPc thin films were prepared on Au and Al thin films using a thermal evaporation method. Two kinds of CuPc thin films were prepared by different substrate heating conditions; one was deposited on preheated substrate at 150。C and the other was annealed after deposition. The microwave reflection coefficients S/sub 11/ of CuPc thin films were changed by the dependence on grain alignment due to heat treatment conditions and depended on thickness of CuPc thin films. Electrical conductivity of interface between metal and organic CuPc was changed by the space charge of the interface. By comparing reflection coefficient S/sub 11/ we observed the electrical conductivity changes of CuPc thin films by the changes of surface potential and space charge at the interface.

  • This study investigated the fatigue stength of non-load carrying cruciform welded joints, which was maunfactured using the SM570 and POSTEN80 high strengh steel. Factors such as fatigue strength, fatigue crack initiation and propagation, thickness effect, and the relatioinship between the static strength and the fatigue strength were examined and compared with previous fatigue testing results. Results showed that the fatigue strength of SM570 and POSTEN80 steel are higher than the grade represented on the design specification. It is also identified the size effect and the dependence of the static stength in a few cases.

  • Silicon-based thin film was prepared at room temperature by an electrochemical deposition method and a feasibility study was conducted for its use as an anode material in a rechargeable lithium battery. The growth of the electrodeposits was mainly concentrated on the surface defects of the Cu substrate while that growth was trivial on the defect-free surface region. Intentional formation of random defects on the substrate by chemical etching led to uniform formation of deposits throughout the surface. The morphology of the electrodeposits reflected first the roughened surface of the substrate, but it became flattened as the deposition time increased, due primarily to the concentration of reduction current on the convex region of the deposits. The electrodeposits proved to be amorphous and to contain chlorine and carbon, together with silicon, indicating that the electrolyte is captured in the deposits during the fabrication process. The silicon in the deposits readily reacted with lithium, but thick deposits resulted in significant reaction overvoltage. The charge efficiency of oxidation (lithiation) to reduction (delithiation) was higher in the relatively thick deposit. This abnormal behavior needs to clarified in view of the thickness dependence of the internal residual stress and the relaxation tendency of the reaction-induced stress due to the porous structure of the deposits and the deposit components other than silicon.

  • In this paper, warm deep drawing process with local heating and cooling technique was attempted to improve the formability of AZ31 magnesium alloy which is impossibly to form by conventional methods at room temperature by finite element method and experiment. For FE analysis, in first model with considering heat transfer, both die and blankholder were heated to 573K while the punch was kept at room temperature by cooling water. Also distribution of thickness and von Mises stress at room temperature and 498k for warm deep drawing were compared by FEM. Uniaxial tension tests at elevated temperature were done in order to obtain the temperature dependence of material constant under temperature of $293K\~573K$ and cross head velocity of $5\~500mm/min$. The phenomenological model for warm deep drawing process in this work was based on the hardening law and power law strain rate dependency. Deep drawing experiment were conducted at temperatures of room temperature, 373K, 423K, 473K, 498K, 523K, and 573K for the blank and deep drawing tools(holder and die) and at a punch speed of 10mm/min.

  • Microstructural dependence of magnetic property of RF/DC sputtered $Co_{69.0}Ni_{18.5}Cr_{12.5}/Cr$ double layer thin film was studied. Grain size was found to be decreased with substrate temperature in the range of $100-200^{\circ}C$ and Cr underlayer thickness(from $500\;{\AA}-2000\;{\AA}$). The peaks (200) and (1120) of X-ray diffraction patterns were evidently grown with the substrate temperature for the Cr underlayer and magnetic layer, respectively. The CoNiCr magnetic layer was found to be well epitaxialy grown on Cr underlayer, and subsequently the coercivity was enhanced.

  • We have investigated the dependence of the magnetization, anisotropy, coercivity, and Kerr rotation on the Fe concentration in FeCo/Pd multilayer thin films, where the Fe concentration in the FeCo sublayer varied between 0 and 100% with maintaining the same sublayer thickness of $2.5\;{\AA}$ FeCo and $10.5\;{\AA}$A Pd. The maximum saturation magnetization was observed at the Fe concentration of about 48at.% in the FeCo sublayer. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and coercivity of the FeCo/Pd multilayer thin film decreased monotonically with increasing the Fe con-centration. The Kerr rotation angle also decreased with increasing the Fe concentration and the amount of vari-ation was remarkably changed with decreasing the light wavelength.
