  • In this report, stress analysis of restraint specimen was done by numerical method (finite element method). Calculations were done by elastic-plastic analysis and thermo-elastic-plastic analysis. The results showed similarities for both cases, and by thermo-elastic-plastic analysis transient characteristics of welding could be found.

  • Welding processes cause undesirable problems, such as residual stresses and deformations due to the thermal loads imposed by local heating, melting, and cooling processes. This paper presents a computational modeling technique to simulate the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process, emphasizing the effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution. Both a three-bar analogy and a three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analysis are carried out in order to explain the effect. Element (de)activation, enthalpy, and adjustment of the reference temperature of thermal strain are considered with respect to the effect of the weld filler metal added to the base metal during a thermo-elastic-plastic analysis. Stress distributions obtained by the present study are compared with measured values and available data from other studies. The effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution is discussed and demonstrated.

  • Finite element analysis of welding processes, which entail phase evolution, heat transfer and deformation, is considered in this paper. Attention focuses on numerical implementation of the thermo-elastic-plastic constitutive equation proposed by Leblond et al in consideration of the transformation plasticity. Based upon the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient, hyperelastic formulation is employed for efficient numerical integration, and the algorithmic consistent moduli for elastic-plastic deformations including transformation plasticity are obtained in the closed form. The convergence behavior of the present implementation is demonstrated via a couple of numerical example.

  • A prediction method for determining the welding residual stress by artificial neural network is proposed. A three-dimensional transient thermo-mechanical analysis has been performed for the $CO_2$ arc welding using the finite element method. The first part of numerical analysis performs a three-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis, and the second part then uses the results of the first part and performs a three-dimensional transient thermo-elastic-plastic analysis to compute transient and residual stresses in the weld. Data from the finite element method are used to train a back propagation neural network to predict the residual stress. Architecturally, the fully interconnected network consists of an input layer for the voltage and current, a hidden layer to accommodate the failure mechanism mapping, and an output layer for the residual stress. The trained network is then applied to the prediction of residual stress in the four specimens. It is concluded that the accuracy of the neural network predicting method is fully comparable with the accuracy achieved by the traditional predicting method.

  • Some industrial steel structures are composed by components linked by several welding joints to constitute an assembly. The main interest of assembly simulation is to evaluate the global distortion of welded structure. The general method, thermo-elasto-plastic analysis, leads to excessive model size and computation time. In this study, a simplified method called "Local and Global approach" was developed to break down this limit and to provide a accurate solution for distortion. Local and global approach is composed of 3 steps; 1) Local simulation of each welding joint on a dedicated mesh (usually very fine due to high thermal gradients), taking into account for the non linearity of the material properties and the moving heat source. 2) Transfer to the global model of the effects of the welding joints by projection of the plastic strain tensors. 3) Elastic simulation to determine final distortions in global model. The welding deformation test for mock-up structure was performed to verify this approach. The predicted welding distortion by this approach had a good agreement with experiment results.

  • An integrated analysis for the thermo-elastic deformation, fatigue, wear and brittle damage evolution of the shrink-fitted die with multi stress-ring of dissimilar materials is presented. A simple numerical algorithm for the moving elastic boundaries characterizing the contacts of the insert and multi stress-rings is presented. The initial stress distribution in the die due to shrink-fit is considered and the traction at the die surface contacting with the work piece is obtained by analyzing the elasto-plastic deformation of work piece. Elastic analysis of the separate-type die is performed and then the evolution of brittle damage, wear and fatigue life are predicted. This integrated analysis is applied to the extrusion die with two layers of stress-rings and the results are discussed in detail.
