Some industrial steel structures are composed by components linked by several welding joints to constitute an assembly. The main interest of assembly simulation is to evaluate the global distortion of welded structure. The general method, thermo-elasto-plastic analysis, leads to excessive model size and computation time. In this study, a simplified method called "Local and Global approach" was developed to break down this limit and to provide a accurate solution for distortion. Local and global approach is composed of 3 steps; 1) Local simulation of each welding joint on a dedicated mesh (usually very fine due to high thermal gradients), taking into account for the non linearity of the material properties and the moving heat source. 2) Transfer to the global model of the effects of the welding joints by projection of the plastic strain tensors. 3) Elastic simulation to determine final distortions in global model. The welding deformation test for mock-up structure was performed to verify this approach. The predicted welding distortion by this approach had a good agreement with experiment results.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the transitional behavior and main factor of excessive welding distortion caused by fabrication process of STS 304 vacuum vessel having double curvature for the efficient quality control of vacuum vessel. In order to do it, the predictive equations of the welding distortion in simple weldment of vacuum vessel were established by conventional finite element analysis. And the principal factor controlling the welding distortion was identified by evaluating the welding distortion of vacuum vessel in each fabrication process with FEA and simplified thermo elastic method. Based on the results, the principal factors of distortion of vacuum vessel were clarified as angular distortion and transverse shrinkage which are a source of excessive out-of plane distortion in the double curved vacuum vessel. It was expected that the FE analysis results of this study could contribute to establish the proper control method of welding distortion for double curved vacuum vessel.
The purpose of this study is to establish the control method of the global bending distortion caused by fabrication process of hatch-cover in a container ship. In order to do it, the transitional behavior of global bending distortion in the deck of hatch-cover during fabrication process was measured by 3-dimensional measuring instrument. From the results, the principal factor controlling the global bending distortion was identified as the bending moment associated with the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the change of the centroid axis of hatch-cover in each fabrication process. Therefore, in this study, with the predictive equations of the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the simplified thermo elastic method, the predictive method for the global bending distortion was established and verified by comparing with the measured result. Based on the results, the amount of reverse bending distortion of main stiffeners was determined to prevent the global bending distortion of hatch-cover.
The purpose of this study is to propose the proper fillet welding process for preventing the buckling distortion in thin panel welded structure. In order to do it, a heat input model for laser hybrid welding process was developed using FEA and experiment. The principal factors controlling the angular distortion and longitudinal shrinkage force caused by FCA and laser hybrid welding were identified as the welding heat input and weld rigidity using FEA. The predictive equations of angular distortion and longitudinal shrinkage force for each welding process were formulated as a function of the principal factors proposed. With the predictive equations, the buckling distortion at the thin panel welded structure with welding process was evaluated and compared using nonlinear buckling analysis and STEM(simplified thermo elastic method). Based on the results, the best way to prevent the buckling distortion at the given welded panel structures was identified as an intermittent FCA welding.

This paper presents the simplified welding distortion analysis method to predict the welding deformation of both plate and stiffener in fillet welds. Currently, the methods based on equivalent thermal strain like Strain as Direct Boundary (SDB) has been widely used due to effective prediction of welding deformation. Regarding the fillet welding, however, those methods cannot represent deformation of both members at once since the temperature degree of freedom is shared at the intersection nodes in both members. In this paper, we propose new approach to simulate deformation of both members. The method can simulate fillet weld deformations by employing composite shell element and using different thermal expansion coefficients according to thickness direction with fixed temperature at intersection nodes. For verification purpose, we compare of result from experiments, 3D thermo elastic plastic analysis, SDB method and proposed method. Compared of experiments results, the proposed method can effectively predict welding deformation for fillet welds.
The use of thin plate increases due to the need for light weight in large ship. Thin plate is easily distorted and has residual stress by welding heat. Therefore, the thin plate should be carefully joined to minimize the welding deformation which costs time and money for repair. For one effort to reduce welding deformation, it is very useful to predict welding deformation before welding execution. There are two methods to analyze welding deformation. One is simple linear analysis. The other is nonlinear analysis. The simple linear analysis is elastic analysis using the equivalent load method or inherent strain method from welding experiments. The nonlinear analysis is thermo-elastic analysis which gives consideration to the nonlinearity of material dependent on temperature and time, welding current, voltage, speed, sequence and constraint. In this study, the welding deformation is analyzed by using thermo-elastic method for PCTC(Pure Car and Truck Carrier) which carries cars and trucks. PCTC uses thin plates of 6mm thickness which is susceptible to welding heat. The analysis dimension is 19,200mm(length) * 13,825mm(width) * 376mm(height). MARC and MENTAT are used as pre and post processor and solver. The boundary conditions are based on the real situation in shipyard. The simulations contain convection and gravity. The material of the thin block is mild steel with $235N/mm^2$ yield strength. Its nonlinearity of conductivity, specific heat, Young's modulus and yield strength is applied in simulations. Welding is done in two pass. First pass lasts 2,100 second, then it rests for 900 second, then second pass lasts 2,100 second and then it rests for 20,000 second. The displacement at 0 sec is caused by its own weight. It is maximum 19mm at the free side. The welding line expands, shrinks during welding and finally experiences shrinkage. It results in angular distortion of thin block. Final maximum displacement, 17mm occurs around welding line. The maximum residual stress happens at the welding line, where the stress is above the yield strength. Also, the maximum equivalent plastic strain occurs at the welding line. The plastic strain of first pass is more than that of second pass. The flatness of plate in longitudinal direction is calculated in parallel with the direction of girder and compared with deformation standard of ${\pm}15mm$. Calculated value is within the standard range. The flatness of plate in transverse direction is calculated in perpendicular to the direction of girder and compared with deformation standard of ${\pm}6mm$. It satisfies the standard. Buckle of plate is calculated between each longitudinal and compared with the deformation standard. All buckle value is within the standard range of ${\pm}6mm$.
As ships become to be larger than ever, the thicker plate and the higher tensile steel plate are used in naval shipyard. Though special chemical composition is needed for high-tensile steels, recent high-tensile steels are made by the TMCP(Thermo-Mechanical control process) skill. The increase of yield stress and tensile stress of TMCP steels is induced from bainite phase which is transformed from austenite, but that increased yield stress can be vanished by another additional thermal cycle like welding and heating. As thermal deformations are deeply related by yield stress of material, the study for prediction of plate deformation by heating should reflect principle of TMCP steels. This study developed an algorithm which can calculate inherent strain. In this algorithm, not only the mechanical principles of thermal deformations, but also the predicting of the portion of initial bainite is considered when calculating inherent strain. The simulations of plate deformation by these values showed good agreements with experimental results of normalizing steels and TMCP steels in welding and heating. Finally we made an inherent strain database of steels used in Class rule.
This paper focuses on the thermal deformation induced preload change in the tilting pad journal bearing, using a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-hydro-dynamic (THD) approach. Preload is considered as a critical factor in designing the tilting pad journal bearing. The initial preload measured under nil external load and nil thermal gradient is influenced by two factors, namely, the thermal deformation and elastic deformation. Thermal deformation is due to a temperature distribution in the bearing pads, whereas the elastic deformation is due to fluid forces acting on the pads. This study focuses on the changes induced in preload and film clearance due to thermal deformation. The generalized Reynolds equation is used to evaluate the force of the fluid and the 3D energy equation is used to calculate the temperature of the lubricant. The abovementioned equations are combined by establishing a relationship between viscosity and temperature. The heat transfer within the bearing pads, the lubricant, and the spinning journal is calculated using the heat flux boundary condition. The 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) is used in modeling the (1) heat conduction in the spinning journal and bearing pads, (2) thermal gradient induced thermal distortion of the spinning journal and pads, and (3) viscous shearing, and heat conduction and convection in a thin film. This evaluation method has an increased fidelity, and it can prove to be a cost-effective tool that can be used by designers to predict the dynamic behavior of a bearing.
The membrane-type Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo tank is equipped with a double barrier to seal the LNG, of which the secondary barrier serves to prevent LNG leakage and mainly uses fiber-reinforced composite materials. However, the composite materials have thermal expansion anisotropy, which deteriorates shape distortion and mechanical performance due to repeated thermal loads caused by temperature changes between cryogenic and ambient during the unloading of LNG. Therefore, in this study, the longitudinal thermal expansion characteristics of the composite materials were obtained using a vertical thermo-mechanical analyzer, and the elastic modulus was obtained through the tensile test for each temperature to perform thermal load analysis for each direction. This is considered that it is useful to secure reliability from the viewpoint of the design of materials for a LNG cargo hold.
