  • This study is to investigate the effect of thermo mechanical treatment on the mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite was formed by deformation. With increasing number of thermo mechanical treatment, volume fraction of martensite was increased rapidly, and then unchanged. With increasing number of thermo mechanical treatment, hardness and strength was increased rapidly, and then unchanged while elongation was decreased rapidly, and then unchanged. With increasing volume fraction of martensite formed by thermo mechanical treatment, hardness and strength was increased rapidly, elongation was decreased rapidly. Thus, hardness, strength and elongation of thermo mechanical treated 316L stainless steel was strongly affected by martensite formed by thermo mechanical treatment. Good combination of strength and elongation was obtained from thermomechanical treatment.

  • This paper is concerned with a study on thermo-elastoplastic characteristics of functionally graded composite. Compared to the classical layered composites, it shows a wide range of thermo-elastoplastic characteristics according to the choice of two major parameters, the thickness-wise volume fraction of constituents and the relative thickness ratio of the graded layer. Therefore, by selecting an appropriate combination of the two parameters, one is expected to design the most suitable heat-resisting composite for a given thermal circumstance. Here, we address the parametric investigation on its characteristics together with theoretical study on thermo-elastoplasticity and numerical techniques for its finite element approximations. Through the numerical experiments, we examine the influence of two parameters on the thermo-elastoplastic characteristics.

  • In this work, transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of an infinite functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPE) plate whose upper surface suffers time-dependent thermal shock are investigated in the context of different thermo-piezo-elastic theories. The thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded piezoelectric plate under consideration are expressed as power functions of plate thickness variable. The solution of problem is obtained by solving the corresponding finite element governing equations in time domain directly. Transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of the FGPE plate, including temperature, stress, displacement, electric intensity and electric potential are presented graphically and analyzed carefully to show multi-field coupling behaviors between them. In addition, the effects of functionally graded parameters on transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses are also investigated to provide a theoretical basis for the application of the FGPE materials.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the mechanical properties and damping capacity of thermo-mechanical treated 316L stainless steel. Dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites were formed by thermo-mechanical treatment, and the grain size was changed from micrometer to sub-micrometer by 5-cycled thermo-mechanical treatment. The volume fraction of dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites was increased, and grain size of austenite increased and lengthened by the with increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. In 5-cycled specimens, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite was more than 25% and the less than 5% of volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite was attained. With increasing number of thermo-mechanical treatment, hardness, strength and damping capacity were increased, but elongation was decreased. Damping capacity was increased with increased hardness and strength, but decreased with increased elongation, and this result was the opposite tendency for general metal.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of thermo-field emission in a freestanding silicon nanomembrane under ion bombardment with various thermal and field conditions. The thermal effect and field effect in thermo-field emission in silicon nanomembrane are investigated by varying kinetic energy of ions and electric field applied to the silicon nanomembrane surface, respectively. We found that thermo-field emission increases linearly as the electric field increases, when the electric field intensity is lower than the threshold. The thermo-field emission (schottky effect) increases proportionally to the power of temperature, which agree well with the predictions of a thermo-field emission model.

  • The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

  • Thermo-acoustic emission (AE) from composite laminates under the repetitive thermal cyclic loads have been quantitatively analyzed in consideration of AE source mechanisms. The repetitive thermal load brought about a large reduction, i.e. an exponential decrease in AE total ringdown counts and AE amplitudes. It was thought that generation of thermo-AE during the first thermal cycle was not caused by crack propagation but by secondary microfracturing due to abrasive contact between crack surfaces.
