A new method is suggested herein to measure the virgin earth stresses by means of a borehole. This novel concept is basically a combination of borehole stress relieving and borehole fracturing techniques. The destressing of the borehole is achieved by means of inducing thermal tensile stresses at the borehole periphery by using a cryogenic fluid such as Liquid Nitrogen($LN_2$). The borehole wall eventually develops fractures when the induced thermal stresses exceed the existing compressive stresses at the borehole periphery in addition to the tensile strength of the rock. The above concept is theoretically analyzed for its potential applicability to interpret in situ stress levels from the tensile fracture stresses and the corresponding borehole wall temperatures. Coupled thermo-mechanical numerical simulations are also conducted using FLAC3D, with thermal option, to check the validity of the proposed techniques. From the preliminary theoretical and numerical analysis, the method suggested for the measurement of in situ stresses appears to be capable of accurate estimation of the virgin stresses by monitoring tensile crack formation at a borehole wall and recording the wall temperatures at the time of crack initiation.
Thermal behavior of soils is mainly focused on thermal conduction, and the study of natural convection is very limited. Increase of soil temperature causes natural convection due to buoyancy from density change of pore water. The limitations of the analysis using fluid dynamics for natural convection in the porous media is discussed and a new numerical analysis is presented for natural convection in porous media using THM governing equations fully coupled in the macroscopic view. Numerical experiments for thermal probe show increase in the uncertainty of thermal conductivity estimated without considering natural convection, and suggest appropriate experimental procedures to minimize errors between analytical model and numerical results. Burial of submarine power cable should not exceed the temperature changes of $2^{\circ}C$ at the depth of 0.2 m under the seabed, but numerical analysis for high permeable ground exceeds this criterion. Temperature and THM properties of the seafloor are important design factors for the burial of power cable, and in this case effects of natural convection should be considered. Especially, in the presence of heat sources in soils with high permeability, natural convection due to the variation of density of pore water should be considered as an important heat transfer mechanism.

A computational analysis of hygro-thermal and mechanical behaviour of concrete column at high temperature is presented. The objective of this study is to develop a finite difference model that simulates coupled heat and transport phenomena in reinforced concrete structures exposed to rapid heating conditions such as fires. The theoretical basis for the integrated finite difference method is presented to describe a powerful numerical technique for solving of fluid flow in porous media. The numerical results predict the phenomena of 'moisture clog' and the explosive spalling of concrete under fire. The investigations show that high-strength concrete(HSC) and normal-strength concrete(NSC) exposed to high temperature have different pore pressure buildup dependent on porosity, permeability and moisture contents. HSC has more possibility than NSC on spalling.

Atmosphere Plasma of Gas Discharge (APGD) has been used in plasma sources for material processing such as etching, deposition, surface modification and so on due to having no thermal damages. The APGD researches on AC source with high frequency have been mainly processed. However, DC APGD studies have been not. In order to understand APGD further, it is necessary to study on fundamental properties of DC APGD. In this paper, we developed a one-dimensional fluid simulation model with capacitively coupled plasma chamber at the atmosphere pressure (760 [Torr]). Nine kinds of Ar discharge particles such as electron (e), positive ions ($Ar^+$, $Ar_2^+$) and neutral particles ($Ar_m^*$, $Ar_r^*$, $Ar_h^*$, $Ar_2^*$(1), $Ar_2^*$(3) and Ar gas) are considered in the computation. The simulation was worked at the current range of 1~15 [mA]. The characteristics of voltage-current were calculated and the structure of Joule heating were discussed. The spatial distributions of Ar DC APGD and the mechanism of power consumption were also investigated.

Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate laminar convective heat transfer in a tube for supercritical water near the thermodynamic critical point. Fluid flow and heat transfer are strongly coupled due to large variations of thermodynamic and transport properties such as density, specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity near the critical point. Heat transfer characteristics in the developing region of the tube show transition behavior between liquid-like and gas-like phases with a peak in heat transfer coefficient distribution near the pseudocritical point. The peak of the heat transfer coefficient depends on pressure and wall heat flux rather than inlet temperature and Reynolds number, Results of the modeling provide convective heat transfer characteristics including velocity vectors, temperature, and the properties as well as the heat transfer coefficient. The effect of proximity to the critical point is considered and a heat transfer correlation is suggested for the peak of Nusselt number in the tube.

This paper proposes a method that involves a combination of FDM and FEM for analyzing casting process. At present, many numerical analysis methods such as FDM, FEM, and BEM are used for solving engineering problems. For a given problem, a specific method that is suited to the problem is adopted; in general, FDM or FVM is favored for problems related to fluid flow or heat transfer, and FEM is adopted in stress analysis. However, there is an increasing need for using a combined method for complex and coupled phenomena analysis. Hence, we proposed a method in which FDM and FEM are coupled in three-dimensional space, and we applied this method to analyze casting process. In the proposed method, solidification and heat transfer was analyzed by using FDM. The field data such as temperature distribution were converted into a format suitable for FEM analysis that was used for calculating thermal stress distribution. Using the proposed method, we efficiently analyzed the analysis process from the viewpoints of work and time.
The objective of this study is to conduct a thermal-hydraulic analysis on the spent fuel pool and to evaluate a parametric effect for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of spent fuel pool. The selected parameters are the Reynolds Number and the gap flow through the oater gap between fuel cell and fuel bundle. The simplified flow network for a path of fuel cells is used to analyze the natural circulation phenomenon. In the flow network analysis, the pressure drop for each assembly from the entrance of the fuel rack to the exit of the fuel assembly is balanced by the driving head due to the density difference between the pool fluid and the average fluid in each spent fuel assembly. The governing equations ore developed using this relation. But, since the parameters(flow rate, pressure loss coefficient, decay heat, density)are coupled each other, iteration method is used to obtain the solution. For the analysis of the YGN 3&4 spent fuel rack, 12 channels are considered and the inputs such as decay heat and pressure loss coefficient are determined conservatively. The results show the thermal-hydraulic characteristics(void fraction, density, boiling height)of the YGN 3&4 spent fuel rack. There occurs small amount of boiling in the cells. Fuel cladding temperature is lower than 343.3$^{\circ}C$. The evaluation of parametric effect indicates that flow resistances by geometric effect are very sensitive to Reynolds number in the transition region and the gap flow is negligible because of the larger flow resistance in the gap flow path than in the fuel bundle.
In order to more closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields, simultaneously. In this study, the thermal-fluid characteristics of high current vacuum arcs were calculated by a commercial multiphysics package, ANSYS, in order to obtain Joule heat, Lorentz force and the interactions with flow variables. We assumed the diffused-mode arc within an AMF vacuum interrupter. It was found with four different currents that the temperature distributions on the anode surface are diffused uniformly without concentration in 7kA for both types (cup and coil-type). But the arc plasma transition and an increase of thermal flux density for increasing the applied current have caused the change of temperature distributions on the anode surface. We should need further studies on the two-way coupling method and radiation model for arc plasmas in order to accomplish the advanced analysis method for multiphysics.

There have been recent efforts to establish methods for high-fidelity and multi-physics simulation with coupled thermal-hydraulic (T/H) and neutronics codes for the entire core of a light water reactor under accident conditions. Considering the computing power necessary for a pin-by-pin analysis of the entire core, subchannel-scale T/H analysis is considered appropriate to achieve acceptable accuracy in an optimal computational time. In the present study, the applicability of in-house code CUPID of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute was extended to the subchannel-scale T/H analysis. CUPID is a component-scale T/H analysis code, which uses three-dimensional two-fluid models with various closure models and incorporates a highly parallelized numerical solver. In this study, key models required for a subchannel-scale T/H analysis were implemented in CUPID. Afterward, the code was validated against four subchannel experiments under unheated and heated single-phase incompressible flow conditions. Thereafter, a subchannel-scale T/H analysis of the entire core for an Advanced Power Reactor 1400 reactor core was carried out. For the high-fidelity simulation, detailed geometrical features and individual rod power distributions were considered in this demonstration. In this study, CUPID shows its capability of reproducing key phenomena in a subchannel and dealing with the subchannel-scale whole core T/H analysis.
