The present study was performed on humans to investigate the physiological strain of wearing protective clothing for shielding electromagnetic waves and to compare control clothing that are currently on the market and new clothing that are developed for improving thermal comfort and material weight. Experiments were conducted in a climatic chamber of $28.8{\pm}0.6^{\circ}C$, $37{\pm}5%$RH under three differed experimental clothing conditions: None, Control, New. The results were as follows. Mean skin temperature and rectal temperature in New were significantly lower than that in None and Control (p<.05). The temperature and humidity inside clothing were lower in None (p<.05). Total weight loss was lower in New. Thermal sensation and thermal comfort were less hot and more comfortable in New than those in Control. It was concluded that wearing the protective clothing for shielding electromagnetic waves affects physiological responses such as distribution of body temperature, sweat rate, etc.
The wearing comfort of garment is governed by two kinds of characteristics such as moisture and thermal transport properties and mechanical properties of fabrics. The porosity influenced by yarn and fabric structural parameters is known as main factor for wearing comfort of garment related to the moisture and thermal transport properties. This study investigated effect of porosity of composite yarns to the moisture and thermal comfort properties of composite fabrics made of hollow composite DTY and ATY yarns. The theoretical porosity and pore size were inversely proportional to cover factor of fabric, but cover factor was not correlated with experimental pore size. The wicking property of hydrophobic PET filament fabric showed inferior result irrespective of porosity, pore size and cover factor. The drying rate was superior at composite fabrics with high pore size and low cover factor, and pore size was dominant factor for drying property. On the other hand, thermal conductivity of composite fabric was mainly influenced by cover factor and not influenced by porosity. Air permeability was influenced by both porosity and cover factor and was highly increased with increasing porosity and decreasing fabric cover factor.
This study has measured indoor temperature and relative humidity and evaluated it for one year by selecting Chungnam's rural areas for improving indoor environment of rural housing in the circumstance that the environment of housing is poor due to deterioration of rural housing. As a result of its evaluation, the indoor temperature difference by household appeared to be more than $13^{\circ}C$, and it was measured that the indoor temperature was mostly low. A difference of more than 40% in case of relative humidity occurred, so the difference of the indoor environment by household was clear. In case of the thermal comfort zone, the number of households that are distributed to more than 50% of a thermal comfort criterion in the winter was only 3 households, rather than the summer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on body temperature, shivering, and perceived thermal comfort of web-based evidence-based practice guideline for patients undergoing gastrectomy. Methods: Eighty patients scheduled for gastrectomy were recruited and assigned to the control or experimental group by sequential order. Before collecting data from the experimental group, a systematic educational program on evidence-based guidelines was provided to the nurses as well anesthesiologists. Data were analyzed using t-test and repeated measured ANOVA. Results: The experimental group showed higher body temperature from the induction of anesthesia until four hours after surgery compared to the control group. In addition, the levels of thermal comfort as well as satisfaction with thermal management were significantly higher in the experiment group. Conclusion: Use of evidence-based guidelines was effective in maintaining body temperature, lowering sensitivity to shivering, and promoting perceived thermal comfort. Therefore, adoption of evidence-based interventions in nursing practice is recommended.
All the outdoor and indoor spaces are connected with each other. The human being moves toward those spaces and experiences temperature fluctuation between the natural and artificial temperature. We conducted an experiment which subjects are the college students wearing the data logger in urban life, and measured 24 hours' exposed temperature and thermal comfort in summer. Results were as follows. 1. Most subjects get weather information(84.6%). Fashion(46.2%) and weather (30.8%) are the reasons to select clothes. They spend their time in indoor environment for 84.92% hours of a day and have an air-conditioner(61.5%) in their houses. 2. Exposed temperature fluctuation were from 33.8$^{\circ}C$ to 15.6$^{\circ}C$. The median value of experienced temperature were 26-27$^{\circ}C$ and average temperature was 26.3$^{\circ}C$. Subjects experienced cold shock of 3.96 times in a day and 67.21% of all evaluated thermal comfort in the range of -1 and 1 by ASHRAE 7 Category Scales. Artificial environment which connected with outside let people experienced temperature fluctuation in wide range.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate comfort levels of functional and non-functional chairs using subjective comfort rating, interface pressure measurement, muscle activity measurement, and skin temperature measurement. Background: Chairs are used for a prolonged period of time for sitting in many places such as the office, at university, at school, in industry, and so on. Almost all people use chairs in their everyday life. The functional properties of the chair are associated with comfort. Method: The subjective evaluation contains questions regarding chair comfort which can be rated with five point scale. The body-seat interface pressure was measured using a pressure mat system. The symmetry of sitting was measured using electromyography. The change in body part (thigh and buttock) temperature before and after sitting on a chair was measured with an infrared camera. Results: Participants rated significantly (p < 0.05) higher comfort scores for the functional chair in relation to the buttock and thigh region. Also, the participants felt a better cushion effect in the functional chair. When using the functional chair, lower interface pressure, better thermal comfort, and better symmetry of erector spinae muscle activity were observed. Conclusion: Overall, interface pressure measurement, muscle activity measurement, thermal imaging and subjective comfort score results showed that the functional chair was more comfortable than the non-functional chair. Application: The adopted methodologies could be used to measure the seating comfort of train seats.
Urban green spaces offer a variety of benefits to living things and humans. However, existing green spaces have been reduced and fragmented due to urbanization, and there is a limit to creating new large green spaces in densely developed cities. Street trees have fewer restrictions on land use, which can be a measure to secure green areas in cities. In Korea, excessive pruning is being done on some street trees for reasons such as blocking of building signboards, contact with electric wires, and restrictions on sidewalk widths. Therefore, it is necessary to quantitatively understand the relationship between the benefits provided by street trees and their structures to come up with an efficient and systematic planning and management plan for urban street trees. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the relationship between the thermal comfort improvement by the shades of street trees and the vertical structure, planting environment, and types of street trees. To calculate the thermal comfort felt by human body, we calculated UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index) of each street tree. For the vertical structure of street trees, we used Terrestrial LiDAR and the point clouds of street tree's crown was sliced vertically at 1m intervals. We conducted a multiple regression analysis on the thermal comfort improvement using the variables we obtained from fields. As a result, in the case of a street tree's vertical structure, the lager the volume of tree's crown located 3-4m (β=0.298, p<.05) and 6-7m (β=0.568, p<.001) above clear length, the better the cooling effect. In addition, the thermal comfort improvement was assessed to decrease as the DBH increased (β=-0.435, p<.001). In general, the crown diameter and DBH are positively correlated, with a cooling effect occurring as crown diameter increases. In this study, the opposite result was obtained due to the small number of trees measured, so additional research is needed by increasing the number of tree samples. In the case of the planting environment, the effect of improving thermal comfort was higher in the shaded area of trees planted to the south (β=-0.541, p<.001). Since unsystematic management of street trees can deteriorate the function of them, quantitative evaluations of the vertical structure of street trees are required, which can provide specific measures for planning and management of urban street trees with thermal comfort effect.
The PEM(Personal Environment Module) system is an individual air conditioning system developed in order to improve thermal comfort in office buildings. In this study, thermal characteristics of a PEM system have measured experimentally and compared with UFAC(Under Floor hir Conditioning) system in the EC(Environment Chamber) constructed in KIER. Results showed that the PEM system was better than UFAC system for thermal comfort and energy conservation.
Cool-down performance after soaking is important because it affects passenger's thermal comfort. The cooling capacity of HVAC system determines initial cool down performance in most cases, the performance is also affected by location, and shape of panel vent, indoor seat arrangement. Therefore, optimal indoor designs are required in developing a new car. In this paper, initial cool down performance is predicted by CFD(computational fluid dynamics) analysis. Experimental time-averaging temperature data are used as inlet boundary condition. For more reliable analysis, real vehicle model and human FE model are used in grid generation procedure. Thermal and aerodynamic characteristics on re-circulation cool vent mode are investigated using CFX 12.0. Thermal comfort represented by PMV(predicted mean vote) is evaluated using acquired numerical data. Temperature and velocity fields show that flow in passenger's compartment after soaking is considerably unstable at the view point of thermodynamics. Volume-averaged temperature is decreased exponentially during overall cool down process. However, temperature monitored at different 16 spots in CFX-Solver shows local variation in head, chest, knee, foot. The cooling speed at the head and chest nearby panel vent are relatively faster than at the knee and foot. Horizontal temperature contour shows asymmetric distribution because of the location of exhaust vent. By evaluating the passenger's thermal comfort, slowest cooling region is found at the driver's seat.
In this research, the psychological and physiological reactions of the driver were measured during winter to evaluate thermal comfort. The experiment was conducted using 3 different cases which are hot air heating, warm-wire seat heating and hot air & warm-wire seat heater operating simultaneously. With regard to psychological reaction, the warm-wire heating mode was the most preferred. The reason is that it is dry in other cases. With regard to EEG response, thermal comfort increased by 37% in warm air mode heating. In addition, when the warm-wire heating mode and the hot air & warm-wire heating mode were simultaneously operated, the thermal comfort continuously increased by between 17% and 20% for 20 minutes after boarding. Under the change of the autonomic nervous system, the thermal stress level increased by 23% after 15 minutes on board in the hot air heating mode and decreased continuously by 13% during the warm-wire seat heating mode. We recommended the hot air heating mode is only used for a short time to raise the inside temperature during the early boarding period and that warm-wire seat heating mode be actively utilized.
