  • Vibration of protein microtubules is investigated based upon Orthotropic Elastic Shell Model, considering the effect of thermal stresses. The complete analytical formulas of thermal vibration for microtubules are obtained. It is observed that the effects of thermal stresses on the vibrational frequency mode are more significant when the longitudinal and circumferential wave vectors are large enough. But when the length of wave vector reduces to 5 nm, these effects have no significant effects. The present results well agree with the lattice vibrations of microtubules. Moreover, the results show that the effects of thermal stresses due to small change in temperature are not so significant but with the increase in temperature its effects are obvious.

  • Thick cylindrical structures, such as assemblies with electrical induction heaters or nuclear fuel element, are sometimes subjected to thermal stresses from internal heating. Such stresses are produced by temperature gradients between the inside and outside surfaces. These problems possess symmetry about either a point or an axis. the objective of this paper is to present the determination of the temperature distribution and thermal stress-strain within a conducting body by finite element method.

  • The single fiber pull-out technique has been commonly used to characterize the mechanical behavior of fiber/matrix interface in fiber reinforced composite materials. In this study, an improved analysis considering the effect of thermal residual stresses in both radial and axial directions is developed for the single fiber pull-out test. It is found to have the pronounced effects on the stress transfer properties across the interface and the interfacial debonding behavior.

  • This paper investigates the effect of dual-phase-lags on a thermoviscoelastic orthotropic solid with a cylindrical cavity. The cylindrical cavity is subjected to a thermal shock varying heat and its material is taken to be of Kelvin-Voigt type. The phase-lag thermoelastic model, Lord and Shulman's model and the coupled thermoelasticity model are employed to study the thermomechanical coupling, thermal and mechanical relaxation (viscous) effects. Numerical solutions for temperature, displacement and thermal stresses are obtained by using the method of Laplace transforms. Numerical results are plotted to illustrate the effect phase-lags, viscoelasticity, and the variability thermal conductivity parameter on the studied fields. The variations of all field quantities in the context of dual-phase-lags and coupled thermoelasticity models follow similar trends while the Lord and Shulman's model may be different. The influence of viscosity parameter and variability of thermal conductivity is very pronounced on temperature and thermal stresses of the thermoviscoelastic solids.

  • Based on the principle of complementary energy, an analytical method is developed which focuses on the end effects for determining thermal stress distributions in a three-layered beam. This method gives the stress distributions which completely satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions. A numerical example is given in order to verify this method. The results show that the present analytical solutions have the values of stress in excellent agreement with the solutions derived by other investigators. Using this method, the effects of the thickness of bond coat on the thermal stresses of a typical sprayed thermal barrier coating, which consists of IN738LC substrate, MCrAIY bond coat and ZrO$_2$-8wt%Y$_2$O$_3$top coat, were investigated.

  • Based on the principle of complementary energy, an analytical method is developed which focused on the end effects for determining thermal stress distributions in the clad beam. This method gives the stress distributions which completely satisfy the stress-free boundary condition at the edge. Numerical results shows that shear and peeling stress at the interface between the substrate and clad are significant near the edge and become negligible in the interior region. Even thought the relative location where the maximum or minimum stresses take place moves to interior as the length of the beam becomes smaller, the absolute location from the free end and the value of these stresses are the same in spite of the variation of the length of beam.

  • In shipyard production processes, lots of steel plates are assembled by welding. Some rectangular steel plates are buttwelded to build a large block in panel production lines. There are some advantages to take the tandem arc welding in butt joints of rectangular plates with respect to welding speed. Hence, the thermal stresses and the temperature distribution of the tandem arc welding are studied in this paper. The solutions in the case of the infinite plate with two instantaneous point heat sources have been obtained. And then the solutions have been extended to the case of two moving heat sources corresponding to the tandem arc welding with the aid of Duhamel's superposition integral. It was found that the temperature distribution was good agreement with the results of the experiments by Rosenthal and Park and the thermal stresses calculated were acceptable with respect to a physical phenomenon. These solutions are able to be applied to the problem such as a line heating.

  • Piping Systems are usually designed for thermal expansion loads based on uniform temperatures at each cross section. However, in lines with low flow rates such as surge lines and spray lines, large transverse temperature gradients have been observed, resulting in too types of additional thermal stresses : (1) local thermal gradient stresses which are independent of routing and supports and (2) gross bending stresses due to induced pipe curvature which are routing and support system dependent. This paper presents a simplified method for analyzing a PER surge line for stratified flow.
