  • PCBs had numerous uses such as hydraulic fluid, heat exchange fluid, sealant, lubricant, and carbonless copy paper. They are most likely found in electric utilities, power stations, industrial facilities, electronic manufacturing plants, petrochemical plants, railroad systems, electric equipment repair facilities, mining sites (active or abandoned), and military camps. Due to its outstanding chemical and thermal stabilities and electrical insulation properties, the commercial and industrial products of PCBs, such as Aroclors, Kaneclors, Clophens, Phenaclors etc., had been widely used as thermal oil and transformer oil from 1930s until the 1970s. The transformer oils were analyzed as a main source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) emission into the environment. Qualitative estimation of oil extracts as carried out with Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260. The transformer oils contained the pure and mixed of Aroclor 1242, Aroclor 1254, and Aroclor 1260. Also, commercial screening kit of 20 ppm and 50 ppm were applied to the transformer oil samples.

  • To improve the quality of $^{99m}Tc-methylenediphonate$ $(^{99m}Tc-MDP)$ for skeletal imaging, different composed $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ complexes were prepared with addition of antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, getisic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid. To characterize the different $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ preparations, some physical and biochemical properties of $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ such as thermal stability, lipophilicity and bindability to serum protein were studied and organ distribution pattern of these complexes also compared. The thermal stabilities of $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ contained antioxidants were dependant mainly on pH, temperature, and elapsed time after the preparation. $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ complex contained gentisic acid as antioxidant was extremely unstable at alkaline condition. The most stable $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ was found in the presence of p-aminobenzoic acid. $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ complexes with antioxidants were very lipophilic but lipophilicity differences in antioxidants were not observed. The bindability of $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ to serum protein was not affect at pH $5.0\sim9.0$ by the different antioxidants. However, protein binding percentage of $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ with ascorbic acid was relatively low (22.7%) at pH 9.0. In biodistribution studies in mice, bone to muscle ratios of $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ preparations containing ascorbic acid, gentisic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid were 15.3, 24.5, and 30.1, respectively. Im to our results, p-aminobenzoic acid is fond to be the most promising antioxidant.

  • We have synthesized the soluble polymide based side chain system with covalently attached NLO chromophore Disperse Red 1. The developed polymer is optically transparent in the range of optical communication wave-lengths. Its glass transition temperature$(T_g)$ and thermal decomposition temperature$(T_d)$ are $225^{\circ}C, 310^{\circ}C$ respectively. The poled film with the poling field of $100 V/\mu\textrm{m}$ shows that the dielectric constant is 3.37 at the 10-kHz frequency, the refractive indices of TM and TE modes are both 1.631 at $\lambda = 1300 nm$, and the Electro-optic coefficients are 4.6~9.2 pm/V at $\lambda = 1300 nm$. There are no decays of the EO coefficient in the poled polymer at $180^{\circ}C$ in one hour, and $90^{\circ}C$ in 500 hours.

  • In this work, the effect of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate)(PBS) in difunctional epoxy(21:P) resin was investigated in terms of rheological properties, cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and mechanical interfacial properties. Rheological properties of the blend system were measured under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energies($\textrm{E}_c$) were determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. The $\textrm{E}_c$ was increased in the presence of 10 wt% PBS as compared with neat 2EP. From the DSC results of the blends, the cure activation energies($\textrm{E}_a$) showed a similar behavior with $\textrm{E}_c$ due to the increased intermolecular interaction between 2EP and PBS. The decomposed activation energies($\textrm{E}_t$) for the thermal stability derived from the integral method of Horowitz-Metzger equation, were also increased in 10 wt% PBS. In addition, 20 wt% PBS showed the highest critical stress intensity factor($\textrm{E}_{IC}$). which was explained by increasing the fracture toughness of the 2EP/PBS blend systems.

  • The water-like ionic liquids have been widely used to enable the proton conduction in ionic liquid based membranes at high temperature and anhydrous PEFCs. In this study, we synthesized various kinds of composite membranes based on hydrocarbon polymers having good thermal and mechanical stabilities at high temperatures and ionic liquids. The composite membrane consisting of hydrocarbon polymer and ionic liquid was characterized by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and impedance spectroscopy. Consequently the non-aqueous composite membranes of a variety of hydrocarbon polymer and ionic liquids have good conductivity and thermal stability at high temperature conditions.

  • The alkali refined rice bran oil (ARBO) and the esterified rice bran oil (ERBO) with glycerol were compared for their thermal stabilities at $150^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$, respectively. The acid value gradually increased in ARBO during heating period but increased slowly in ERBO-2 and declined gradually in ERBO-1. The peroxide value was somewhat fluctuated during heating period, and the maximum peroxide value in all samples was 13.3 meq/kg. TBA value was sharply increased for the first 10 hr. heating and slowed down thereafter for all samples but ERBO were intensely colored after the heat treatment. The TG ratio of the oils after 90 hr. heating was not different at $150^{\circ}C$ but ERBO was 2-7% higher ratio of TG than ARBO at $180^{\circ}C$. The oxidative stability of ARBO was twice higher than ERBO according to the result of active oxygen test.

  • Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by the Hummers and Offeman method from graphite. Two different types of functionalized graphene sheets (FGSs) were synthesized by using GO. Hexamethylamine (HDA) substituted vertically to the graphene sheet (Ver-HDA-GS) was synthesized from HDA and epoxy group in GSs. Whereas, horizontally substituted hexadecanol (HDO) to the GS(Hor-HDO-GS) was synthesized from HDO and alcohol groups via reduced GO (RGO), respectively. The structures of the GO, RGO, Ver-HDA-GS, and Hor-HDO-GS were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). In addition, we examined the thermal stability and morphology. Atomic force microscope (AFM) disclosed that Ver-HDA-GS consisted of one- or two-layer graphene regions. However, the Ver-HDA-GS layers showed average thickness of 1.76 nm. The thermal stabilities of the FGSs were better than those of the GO and RGO. The Ver- HDA-GS was well dispersed in common solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), toluene, chloroform, and decalin.

  • In this work, biodegradable modified aliphatic polyester (MAP) in tetrafunctional epoxy (4EP) resin was investigated in terms of cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, rheological properties, and mechanical interfacial properties. DSC results of the blends show that the cure activation energies (E$\_$a/) were increased in 10 wt% of MAP compared with neat 4EP, due to the increasing intermolecular interaction between 4EP and MAP. The decomposed activation energies (E$\_$t/) derived from Coats-Redfern method, were increased within the 10∼30 wt% composition range of MAP contents, resulting from increasing the cross-linking density of the blend system. Rheological properties of the blend system were investigated under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energies (E$\_$c/) were determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. As a result, the E$\_$c/ showed a similar behavior with E$\_$a/. The fracture toughness (K$\_$IC/) of the mechanical interfacial properties was discussed in semi-IPN behaviors of the casting specimen.

  • Recently, Importance of studying based on biomass materials have increased due to the concern about plastic waste problems. Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a potential alternative to petroleum-based plastics because of its biodegradable property. Poly(ethylene-co-isosorbide terephthalate) (PEIT) is bio-based plastic, produced by isosorbide monomer. In this study, CAB/PEIT blends were prepared by solution blending to improve thermal stability of CAB. CAB and PEIT were dissolved in chloroform, and then precipitated in ethanol. To evaluate the compatibility of CAB/PEIT blends, the morphology and glass transition behaviors were analyzed by FE-SEM and DMA, respectively. TGA results revealed the improved thermal stabilities of the PEIT-rich and 50:50 compositions. No new or changed crystal structures were observed in the XRD result. Finally, CAB/PEIT solution blends showed good compatibility in overall compositions.
