  • During their life span, post-tensioned concrete structures may be exposed to thermal loads. Therefore, there has been a growing interest in research on the advanced analysis and design of post-tensioned concrete slabs subjected to thermal loads. This paper investigates the structural behaviour of post-tensioned one-way spanning concrete slabs. A nonlinear finite element model for the analysis of post- tensioned unbonded and bonded concrete slabs at elevated temperatures was developed. The interface between the tendon and surrounding concrete was also modelled, allowing the tendon to retain its profile shape during the deformation of the slab. The load-deflection behaviour, load-force behaviour in the tendon, and the failure modes are presented. The numerical analysis was conducted by the finite element ANSYS software and was carried out on two different one-way concrete slabs chosen from literature. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of several selected parameters on the overall behavior of post-tensioned one-way concrete slab. These parameters include the effect of tendon bonding, the effect of thermal loading and the effect of tendon profile. Comparison between uniform thermal loading and nonuniform thermal loading showed that restrained post tensioned slab with bottom surface hotter has smaller failure load capacity.

  • In this study, thermal tropopause height defined from WMO (World Meteorological Organization) using temperature profile derived from Advance Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A; hereafter named AMSU) onboard EOS (Earth Observing System) Aqua satellite is retrieved. The temperature profile of AMSU was validated by comparison with the radiosonde data observed at Osan weather station. The validation in the upper atmosphere from 500 to 100 hPa pressure level showed that correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.85~0.97 and the bias was less than 1 K with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of ~3 K. Thermal tropopause height was retrieved by using AMSU temperature profile. The bias and RMSE were found to be -5~ -37 hPa and 45~67 hPa, respectively. Correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.5 to 0.7. We also analyzed the change of tropopause height and temperature in middle troposphere in the extreme heavy rain event (23 October, 2003) associated with tropopause folding. As a result, the distinct descent of tropopause height and temperature decrease of ~8 K at 500 hPa altitude were observed at the hour that maximum precipitation and maximum wind speed occurred. These results were consistent with ERA (ECMWF Reanalysis)-Interim data (potential vorticity, temperature) in time and space.

  • The thermal deformation of a workpiece during grinding is one of the most important factors that affect a flatness of a grinding surface. The heat generated in one-pass surface grinding causes the convex deformation of a workpiece. Therefore, the ground surface represents a conacve profile. In the analysis a simple model of the temperature distribution, based on the result of a finite element method, is applied. The analyzed results are compared with experimental results in surface grinding. The main results obtained are as follows; (1) The temperature distibution of a workpiece by FEM is comparatively in good agreement with the experimental results. (2) The bending moment by generated heat cause a convex deformation of the workpiece and it reads to a concave profile of the grinding surface.

  • The approach in this thesis is for prediction of deformed strip profile in hot rolling mill. This approach shows how to make an expression as a mathematical form in predicting strip profile. This approach is based on the velocity field, shear stress and material flow on the strip edge along width direction and lateral displacement and stress along width are analytically calculated. Roll force is calculated in each section and then combined together to show roll force distribution along width. All the assumptions to make equation form for this approach are supported by FEM simulation result and the result of model is verified by FEM result. So, this model will supply very useful tool to the researcher and engineers which takes less time and has similar accuracy in predicting roll force profile comparing to FEM simulation. This model has to be combined with deformed roll profile model, which include thermal crown prediction and wear prediction model to predict deformed strip profile.

  • The characteristics of temperature profile around human body with heating life vest at sea were investigated in this paper. Especially, the temperature profile of human body was numerically calculated by finite difference method with Mathcad. The main parameters were seasonal mean sea water temperature, heating amount and heating duration time of heating life vest. In this paper, the boundary layer was composed by the difference matters, and the thermal conductivity was calculated with an adjacent cells using thermal resistance method. It was clarified that the body temperature was kept highly and the risk of death from hypothermia was reduced by wearing heating life vest.

  • A thermal analysis method taking into account energy balance in each elements of heat exchanger was introduced. This method has a merit in predicting the temperature field over the heat exchanger in detail. To verify this method, the results were compared with the published ones. The thermal analysis of the radiator in vehicles was also conducted and the results were compared with experimental ones. It is concluded that this method can be used in thermal analysis with relatively small error. When the velocity profile of inlet air is not uniform, the outlet temperature of cooling water is higher than that of uniform velocity profile.

  • This study demonstrats the profiles of phosphorus ions in silicon by MeV implantation(1∼3 MeV). Implanted profiles could be measured by SIMS(Cameca 4f) and compared with simulation results(TRIM program and analytical description method only using on Pearson function). The experimental result in the peak concentration region has a little bit deviation from simulation data. By RBS and Channeling measurements the defect distribution of implanted samples could be measured and spectrum are calibrated depth with RUMP simulation By XTEM measurement the thickness of defect zone also could be measured. Finally thermal annealing for the electrical activation of implanted ions carried out by RTA(rapid thermal annealing). The concentration-depth profiles after heat treatment was measured by SR(spreading resistance)-method.

  • A Gaussian beam of single mode fiber laser was changed into a ring-shaped pattern after it was transmitted through the hollow optical fiber. The ring-shaped beam was focused on a plane by an f-. lens and it was scanned by a Galvano-mirror. The spatial profile of laser energy incident on a plane had two peaks at both sides of the scanned linear track. The profile was compared with the result obtained when the Gaussian beam was dithered transversely by an acousto-optic modulator. It is found that hollow optical fiber beam shaper can replace acousto-optic beam dithering device which is employed in a laser induced thermal printing system.

  • Although functionally gradient materials(FGM) has been developed so as to decrese the thermal stress induced by the high temperature difference between metal and ceramic, it is necessary to analyze the residual thermal stress for the fabrication of FGM. In order to reduce the residual thermal stress, compositional profile of SUS/PSZ(FGM) was suggested using finite element method(FEM). The stress analysis was made on the shape of cylinder with axial symmetry using two dimensional triangular element. For the case of various cylinder with different compositional gradient, calculated stress components were in reasonably good agreement with the expected ones. And the qualitative profile was suggested.

  • This paper describes the effects of thermally oxidized tallow on the serum lipids profile and radical scavenging activity (RSA) of the lipids extracted from the different tissues of the rabbits. Tallow was thermally oxidized at $130^{\circ}C$ for 9, 18, 27, 36 and 45 h respectively. Thermally oxidized tallow was fed to the local strain of Himalayan rabbits for one week. Results show that oxidation increases the formation of hydroperoxides and decrease the level of radical scavenging activity of the tallow. The rabbit serum lipids profile showed a dose dependent increase in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. However, no statistically significant increase was observed in the HDL-cholesterol with an increase of oxidation time. Serum glucose and rabbits body weight decrease significantly (p < 0.05) and was highly correlated with the serum lipids profile. The percent RSA of the lipids extracted from the liver, brain and muscles tissues showed a significant decrease with respect to 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/body weight as well as oxidation time. Data suggests that thermal oxidation and use of thermally oxidized beef tallow is harmful and therefore an alternative way of cooking should be used.
