  • A sequence of visually experimental observations was conducted to investigate the flow boiling and two-phase flow in a coiled tube. Different boiling modes and bubble dynamical evolutions were identified for better recognizing the phenomena and understanding the two-phase flow evolution and heat transfer mechanisms. The dissolved gases and remained vapor would serve as foreign nucleation sites, and together with the effect of buoyancy, centrifugal force and liquid flow, these also induce very different flow boiling nucleation, boiling modes, bubble dynamical behavior, and further the boiling heat transfer performance. Bubbly flow, plug flow, slug flow, stratified/wavy flow and annular flow were observed during the boiling process in the coiled tube. Particularly the effects of flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release in the bends were noted and discussed with the physical understanding. Coupled with the effects of the buoyancy, centrifugal force and inertia or momentum ratio of the two fluids, the flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release effects have critical importance for flow pattern in the bends and flow evolution in next straight sections.

  • The present paper deals with the analytical solution of a functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) cylinder in the magnetic field under mechanical, thermal and electrical loads. All mechanical, thermal and electrical properties except Poisson ratio can be varied continuously and gradually along the thickness direction of the cylinder based on a power function. The cylinder is assumed to be axisymmetric. Steady state heat transfer equation is solved by considering the appropriate boundary conditions. Using Maxwell electro dynamic equation and assumed magnetic field along the axis of the cylinder, Lorentz's force due to magnetic field is evaluated for non homogenous state. This force can be employed as a body force in the equilibrium equation. Equilibrium and Maxwell equations are two fundamental equations for analysis of the problem. Comprehensive solution of Maxwell equation is considered in the present paper for general states of non homogeneity. Solution of governing equations may be obtained using solution of the characteristic equation of the system. Achieved results indicate that with increasing the non homogenous index, different mechanical and electrical components present different behaviors along the thickness direction. FGP can control the distribution of the mechanical and electrical components in various structures with good precision. For intelligent properties of functionally graded piezoelectric materials, these materials can be used as an actuator, sensor or a component of piezo motor in electromechanical systems.

  • The electron energy probability function (EEPF) is of significant importance since the plasma chemistry such as the rate of ionization is determined by the electron energy distribution function. It is usually assumed to be Maxwell distribution for 0-D global model. Meanwhile, it has been observed experimentally that the form of EEPF of Ar plasma changes from being two-temperature to Druyvesteyn like as the gas pressure increases. Thus, to apply the 0-D global model of Maxwellian distribution to the non-Maxwellian plasma, we investigated the relative contribution of two distinct electrons with different temperatures. The contributions of cold/hot electrons to the equilibrium state of the plasma have attracted interest and been researched. The contributions to the power and particle balance of cold/hot electrons were studied by comparing the result of the global model considering all combinations of electron temperatures with that of 1-D Particle-in-Cell and Monte Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) simulation and the results of studies were analyzed physically. Furthermore, comparisons term by term for variations of the contribution of cold/hot electrons at different driving currents are presented.

  • Characteristics of a plasma reactor for partial oxidation of methane, especially focused on the role and effectiveness of plasma chemistry, is investigated. Partial oxidation of methane is investigated using a rotating arc which is a three dimensional version of a typical glidingarc. The rotating arc has both the characteristics of equilibrium and non-equilibrium plasma. Non-equilibrium characteristics of the rotating gliding arc can be increased by rotating an elongated arc string attached at both the tip of inner electrode and the edge of outer electrode. In this way, plasma chemistry can be enhanced and hydrogen selectivity can reach almost 100% that is much higher than thermal equilibrium condition. As a result, the present study enables the strategic approach of the plasma reforming process by means of appropriate reactor design to maximize plasma effect and resulting in maximized reaction efficiency.

  • We present results for transport properties of diatomic fluids by isothermal-isobaric (NpT) equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations using Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas. As the molecular elongation of diatomic molecules increases from the spherical monatomic molecule, the diffusion coefficient increases, indicating that longish shape molecules diffuse more than spherical molecules, and the rotational diffusion coefficients are almost the same in the statistical error since random rotation decreases. The calculated translational viscosity decreases with the molecular elongation of diatomic molecule within statistical error bar, while the rotational viscosity increases. The total thermal conductivity decreases as the molecular elongation increases. This result of thermal conductivity for diatomic molecules by EMD simulations is again inconsistent with the earlier results of those by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations even though the missing terms related to rotational degree of freedom into the Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas with regard to the calculation of thermal conductivity for molecular fluids are included.

  • A numerical analysis has been carried out on forced convection heat transfer in the developing region of a porous channel. The channel is filled with an isotropic porous medium. At the channel walls, a uniform heat flux is given. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy equation and the LTNE model which does not employ the assumption of local thermal equilibrium between solid and fluid phases. Details of thermal fields in the developing region are examined over wide ranges of the thermal parameters. The numerical solutions at the fully developed region are compared with the previous analytical solutions. The correlation for predicting local Nusselt number in a porous channel is proposed.

  • We have assessed the applicability of the thermal-hydraulic system analysis code, SPACE, to a small modular reactor called SMART. For the assessment, the experimental data from a scale-down integral-test facility, SMART-ITL, were used. It was conformed that the SPACE code unrealistically calculates the safety injection flow rate through the CMT and SIT during a small-break loss-of-coolant experiment. This unrealistic behavior was due to the overprediction of interfacial heat transfer at the steam-water interface in a vertically stratified flow in the tanks. In this study, a special thermal-hydraulic component model has been developed to realistically calculate the interfacial heat transfer when a strong non-equilibrium two-phase flow is formed in the CMT or SIT. Additionally, we developed a special heat structure model, which analytically calculates the heat transfer from the hot steam to the cold tank wall. The combination of two models for the tank are called the special component model. We assessed it using the SMART-ITL passive safety injection system (PSIS) test data. The results showed that the special component model well predicts the transient behaviors of the CMT and SIT.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the effect of vacuum on the thermal performance of a nonglass evacuated tube. A series of measurements are made indoors to monitor the temperature change of the absorber plate contained in the evacuated tube under different conditions of vacuum and heat fluxes. Those temperatures measured at the thermal equilibrium could be used to assess the heat losses to the ambient in link with the steady operation of non-glass evacuated tubes for solar exploitation.

  • In this paper, hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory is developed for thermal buckling of functionally graded plates with porosity by dividing transverse displacement into bending and shear parts. The present theory is variationally consistent, and accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shearstrains across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. Three different patterns of porosity distributions (including even and uneven distribution patterns, and the logarithmic-uneven pattern) are considered. The logarithmic-uneven porosities for first time is mentioned. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The non-linear governing equations are solved for plates subjected to simply supported boundary conditions. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and non-linear distribution through-the-thickness. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out to assess the effects of volume fraction index, porosity fraction index, aspect ratio and side-to-thickness ratio on the buckling temperature difference of imperfect FG plates.
