An accurate prediction of budburst in grapevines is indispensable for vineyard frost warning system operations in spring because cold tolerance depends heavily on phonology. However, existing frost warning systems utilize only daily minimum temperature forecasts since there is no way to estimate the site-specific phonology of grapevines. A budburst estimation model based on thermal time was used to project budburst dates of two grapevine cultivars (Kyoho and Campbell Early), and advisories were issued depending on phonology as well as temperature. A 'warning' is issued if two conditions are met: the forecasted daily minimum temperature falls below $-1.5^{\circ}C$ and the estimated phonology is within the budburst period. A 'watch' is issued for a temperature range of -1.5 to $+1.5^{\circ}C$ with the same phonology condition. Validation experiments were done at 8 vineyards in Anseong in spring 2005, and the results showed a good agreement with the observations. This method was applied to the climatological normal year (1971-2000) to determine sites with high frost risk at a 30 m grid cell resolution. Among 608,585 grid cells constituting Anseong, 1,059 cells were identified as high risk for growing Kyoho and 2,788 cells for Campbell Early.
The recent ABB/CE(Asea Brown Boveri Combustion Engineering) type pressurized oater reactor-s have the on-line monitoring system, i.e., the COLSS(core operating limit supervisory system), to prevent the specified acceptable fuel design limits from being violated during normal operation and anticipated operational occurrences. One of the main functions of COLSS is the on-line monitoring of the DNB(departure from nucleate boiling) overpower margin by calculating the MDNBR(mini-mum DNB ratio) for the measured operating condition at every second. The CETOP-D model, used in the MDNBR calculation of COLSS, is benchmarked conservatively against the TORC mod-el using an inlet flow factor of hot assembly in CETOP-D as an adjustment factor for TORC. In this study, a technique to optimize the CETOP-D inlet flow factor has been developed by elim-inating the excessive conservatism in the ABB/CE's. A correlation is introduced to account for the actual variation of the CETOP-D inlet flow factor within the core operating limits. This technique was applied to the core operating range of the YongGwang Units 3&4 Cycle 1, which results in the increase of 2% in the DNB overpower margin at the normal operating condition, compared with that from the ABB/CE method.
This research was conducted to provide basic data of surplus heat for designing solar heat-storage systems. The surplus heat is defined as the heat exhausted by forced ventilations from the greenhouses to control the greenhouse temperature within setting limits. Various simulations were performed to compare the differences of thermal behaviors among greenhouse types as well as among several domestic areas by using pseudo-TMY (Typical Meteorological Year) data manipulated based both on the weather data supplied from Korean Meteorological Administration and the TMY data supplied from The Korean Solar Energy Society. Additional analyses were carried out to examine the required heating energy together with some others such as the energy balances in greenhouses to be considered. The results of those researches are summarized as follows. Regional surplus solar heats for the nine regions with 4-type were analyzed. The results showed that the ratio of surplus solar energy compared to heating energy was the highest in Jeju (about 212.0~228.0%) for each greenhouse type. And followed by Busan, Kwangju, Jinju, Daegu, Daejeon, Jeonju, Suwon and Daekwanryung. And irrespective of greenhouse types, surplus solar energy alone could cover up nearly all of the required supplemental heating energy except for a few areas.
This study is about an analysis of surplus solar energy by important greenhouse types as well as setting temperature different by using Typical Meteorological Year data which was secured in order to provide basic data for designing an optimum thermal storage system to accumulate surplus solar energy generating in greenhouses during the daytime. Depending on the setting temperatures of $15{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ for greenhouse heating during day and night, surplus heat amounts were varied at the rate of about $0.2{\sim}6.9%/4^{\circ}C$ with some variations according to the greenhouse types and regions. On the other hand, the variations of supplemental heat requirements were about $29.7{\sim}50.0%/4^{\circ}C$. Depending on the setting temperatures for greenhouse ventilations(low $25{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ and high $27{\sim}31^{\circ}C$), surplus heat amounts were varied at the rate of about $-9.9{\sim}-35.6%/4^{\circ}C$ in auto-type greenhouse. But in single-type greenhouses, they were about $-5.1{\sim}-13.4%/4^{\circ}C$. There were not significant changes in supplemental heat amounts depending on setting temperatures of ventilation for both greenhouse types and regions.
This paper presents a brief historical review of various attempts to estimate the age of the Earth, and reappraises the study of Patterson (1956) which revealed for the first time that the age of the Earth is $4550{\pm}70Ma$ by measuring Pb isotope ratios of several meteorites and a marine sediment. The standard model for the planetary formation of early solar system is: formation of solid particles condensed from the cooling of hot nebular gas -> formation of planet-sized bodies by accretion of those solid particles. The Moon is supposed to have formed from the accretion of the relicts produced by the collision of proto-Earth with Mars-sized body. It is not easy to pinpoint the age of the Earth, considering the series of events related to the formation of the Earth. So, I propose that the collision age as that of the Earth, since the present status of the Earth is thought to be the direct product of the collision. According to the previous studies, the collision age can be broadly constrained between the age ($4567.30{\pm}0.16Ma$) of the earliest condensates (CAI, calcium-aluminum rich inclusion) of the nebula gas, i.e., the age of the solar system, and the oldest age ($4,456{\pm}40Ma$) among rocks and minerals of the Earth and the Moon. We need more precise estimation of the collision age, since it is important in estimating time scale for the formation of planet-size body and in revealing thermal evolution of magma oceans of the Earth and the Moon presumably developed right after the collision.
In this study, the effect of enzyme-modified starch used in the preparation of filled hydrogel powder loaded with curcumin (FHP) on redispersibility, thermal and UV stability, and curcumin retention during in vitro digestion was investigated. FHP maintained stability without layer separation when redispersed and showed more stability against UVB than the emulsion powder (EMP). There was no significant difference in the chemical stability of curcumin between rice starch-based filled hydrogel powder (RS-FHP) and enzyme-modified starch-based filled hydrogel powder (GS-FHP). However, the gel matrix of GS-FHP maintained greater stability of lipid droplets in the stomach compared to RS-FHP, thereby improving the retention rate of curcumin after in vitro digestion. GS-FHP could be used as a novel material for developing premixes that require stable formulation and maintenance of functional substances, as it can increase the dispersion stability and retention rate of functional substances after digestion.

Evaporative humidification using a humidifying element is used widely for the humidification of a building or a data center. The performance of a humidifying element is commonly expressed as the humidification efficiency, which is assumed to be independent of the air temperature or humidity. To verify this assumption, a series of tests were conducted under two air conditions - data center ($25^{\circ}C$ DBT, $15^{\circ}C$ WBT) and commercial building ($35^{\circ}C$ DBT, $21^{\circ}C$ WBT) - using humidifying elements made from cellulose/PET and changing the frontal air velocity from 1.0 m/s to 4.5 m/s. Three samples having a 100 mm, 200 mm, or 300 mm depth were tested. The results showed that the humidification efficiency is dependent on the air condition. Indeed, even dehumidification occurred at the inlet of the humidifying element at the air condition of commercial building. This suggests that a proper thermal model should account for the inlet area, where the amount of moisture transfer may be different from the other part of the humidification element. As the depth of the element increased from 100 mm to 200 mm, the humidification efficiency increased by 29%. With further increases to 300 mm, it increased by 42%. On the other hand, the pressure drop also increased by 47% and 86%.

In order to develop novel thermal imaging materials for microbolometer applications, $[(Ni_{0.3}Mn_{0.7})_{1-x}Cu_x]_3O_4$ ($0.18{\leq}x{\leq}0.26$) thin films were fabricated using metal-organic decomposition. Effects of Cu content on the electrical properties of the annealed films were investigated. Spinel thin films with a thickness of approximately 100 nm were obtained from the $[(Ni_{0.3}Mn_{0.7})_{1-x}Cu_x]_3O_4$ films annealed at $380^{\circ}C$ for five hours. The resistivity (${\rho}$) of the annealed films was analyzed with respect to the small polaron hopping model. Based on the $Mn^{3+}/Mn^{4+}$ ratio values obtained through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the hopping mechanism between $Mn^{3+}$ and $Mn^{4+}$ cations discussed in the proposed study. The effects of $Cu^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ cations on the hopping mechanism is also discussed. Obtained results indicate that $[(Ni_{0.3}Mn_{0.7})_{1-x}Cu_x]_3O_4$ thin films with low temperature annealing and superior electrical properties (${\rho}{\leq}54.83{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, temperature coefficient of resistance > -2.62%/K) can be effectively employed in applications involving complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated microbolometer devices.
Catalytic supports made of carbon have many advantages, such as high coking resistance, tailorable pore and surface structures, and ease of recycling of waste catalysts. Moreover, they do not require pre-reduction. In this study, ash-free coal (AFC) was obtained by the thermal extraction of carbonaceous components from raw coal and its performance as a carbon catalytic support was compared with that of well-known activated carbon (AC). Nickel was dispersed on the carbon supports and the resulting catalysts were applied to the steam reforming of toluene (SRT), a model compound of biomass tar. Interestingly, nickel catalysts dispersed on AFC, which has a very small surface area (${\sim}0.13m^2/g$), showed higher activity than those dispersed on AC, which has a large surface area ($1,173A/cm^2$). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the particle size of nickel deposited on AFC was smaller than that deposited on AC, with the average values on AFC ${\approx}11nm$ and on AC ${\approx}23nm$. This proved that heteroatomic functional groups in AFC, such as carboxyls, can provide ion-exchange or adsorption sites for the nano-scale dispersion of nickel. In addition, the pore structure, surface morphology, chemical composition, and chemical state of the prepared catalysts were analyzed using Brunauer-Emmett-Taylor (BET) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR).

An end-line flame arrester allows free venting in combination with flame protection for vertical vent applications. End-line flame arresters are employed in various fields, especially in shipping. In flame arresters, springs are essential parts because the spring load and the spring's elasticity determine the hood opening moment. In addition, the spring has to work under a high-temperature condition because of the burning gas flame. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical load and elasticity of the spring when the flame starts to appear. Based on simulations of the working process of a specific end-line flame arrester, a thermal and structural analysis of the spring is performed. A three-dimensional model of a burned spring is built using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input into a finite element method simulation to analyze the spring structure. The research team focused on three cases of spring loads: 43, 93, and 56 kg, correspondingly, at 150 mm of spring deflection. Consequently, the spring load was reduced by 10 kg after 5 min under a $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat condition. The simulation results can be used to predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at the burning time variation. Moreover, the obtained outcome can provide the industry with references to optimize the design of the spring as well as that of the flame arrester.
