  • This research is aimed at the development of a software that predicts the surface temperature profiles of three-dimensional objects on the ground considering the spectral solar radiation through the atmosphere. The thermal modelling is essential for identifying the objects on the scenes obtained from the satellites. And the temperature distribution on the objects is necessary to obtain their infrared images in contrast to the background. We developed a software that could be used to model the thermal problems of the ground objects irradiated by the spectral solar radiation. This software can be used to handle the conduction within the object as a one-dimensional mode into the depth or as a three-dimensional mode through the media. LOWTRAN7 is used to model the spectral solar radiation including the direct and diffuse solar radiances. In this paper, temperature distributions on the objects obtained by using the one-dimensional and the three-dimensional thermal models are compared with each other to examine the applicability of the relatively easy-to-apply one-dimensional model.

  • A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesium alloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraft components. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterized by SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed better corrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily due to the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restricting the diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermo vacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical properties of the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimen with an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness during the pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.

  • Recently, high-thermal-conductivity graphene and carbon nanotube nanoparticles have attracted particularly close attention from researchers. In the present study, the thermal conductivity and viscosity properties of two kinds of graphene and carbon nanotube nanofluids added to distilled water - two graphenes and carbon nanotubes of differing size - were compared and analyzed. The thermal conductivities of the nanofluids, formulated in the usual manner by adding graphene and carbon nanotube to distilled water and subjecting the mixture to ultrasonic dispersion, were measured by the transient hot-wire method, and the viscosities were determined using a rotational digital viscometer. As a result, we concluded that the nanofluid of small particle diameter of graphene have outstanding properties as heat transfer media, due to their excellent thermal conductivity and viscosity, compared with the other nanofluid.

  • An artificially modulated magnetic Co/Pd multilayer is one of the promising candidates for high density magneto-optic (MO) recording media, due to large Kerr rotation angle in the wavelength of a blue laser beam. however, since multilayer structure, as well as amorphous structure, is a non-equilibrium state in terms of free energy and MO recording is a kind of thermal recording which is conducted aound Curie temperature (Tc) of the recording media, when the multilayer is used for the MO recording media, changes in the multilayer structure are occurred as the amorphous structure do. Therefore, the assessment of the structural stability in the Co/Pd multilayer is crucially important both for basic research and applications. As the parameter of the structural stability in this research, modulation amplitude and particle size of the Co/Pd multilayer are measured in terms of Ar sputtering pressure and heat treatment temperature. From the results of the research, we find out that the magnetic exchange energy in the structural changes of a magnetic multilayer structure and suggest the operating temperature range for MO recording in the Co/Pd multilayer for the basic research and applications, respectively.

  • This paper presents the numerical methodology of ATHOS3 code for thermal hydraulic analysis of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) steam generators. Topics include porous media approach, governing equations, physical models and correlations for solid-to-fluid interaction and heat transfer, and numerical solution scheme. The ATHOS3 code is applied to the thermal hydraulic analysis of steam generator in the Korea Kori Unit-1 nuclear power plant and the computed results are presented.

  • The thermal front over the shallow coastal seas of Korea during the winter season provides very unique acoustic media such that wave equation is easily separable and the solutions turn out to be very simple and well known. In steady of using the WKB method to solve the radial equation the mode technique have been applied to obtain the solution. The radial propagation is rather weakly influenced by the presence of the thermal front that causes the horizontal variations of the sound speed. The physical description of the sound propagation is also presented in terms of ray tracing.

  • In this study, a thermal-gradient chemical vapor infiltration (TG-CVI) process was numerically studied in order to enhance the deposition uniformity within the preform. The computational fluid dynamics technique was used to solve the governing equations for heat transfer and gas flow during the TG-CVI process for two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) models. The temperature profiles in the 2-D and 3-D models showed good agreement with each other and with the experimental results. The densification process was investigated in a 2-D axisymmetric model. Computation results showed the distribution of the SiC deposition rate within the preform. The results also showed that using two-zone heater gave better deposition uniformity.

  • Recently, due to the tremendous growth of media technology, demands of the aspheric glass lens which is a high-performance and miniaturized is gradually increasing. Generally, the aspheric glass lens is manufactured by GMP(Grass Molding Press) method using WC(tungsten carbide) mold core. In this study, the thermal deformation which occurs in the cooling step of GMP was considered, and it was compensated the form of mold core. The lens which was molded by compensated mold core was satisfied that can be applied to the actual specifications.
