Stage transformation characteristics of Li, K and Na-graphite deintercalation compounds (GDICs) were studied under consideration of a deintercalation mechanism of the intercalants between carbon layers. Li-graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) synthesized by a controlling temperatures and pressures have been spontaneously decomposed in the atmosphere. By X-ray differaction analysis the $d_{001}$-values of stage 1 and 2 were identified to be 3.71 and 7.06 $\AA$, respectively. After 6 weeks, the deintercalation reaction of the Li-GICs ceased and only residual compounds could be observed. K-GICs were synthesized by the modified two-bulb method resulting in structural stabilities and stage transitions. By X-ray diffraction analysis the very stable K-graphite residue compounds were observed after 10 weeks. Na-GICs with stage 1 and 2 were synthesized using the high temperature and pressure technique. The temperature dependence of a deintercalation reaction and a thermal stability of Na-GICs were discussed. The structure changes of the Na-GDICs depending on heating rates were identified by X-ray diffraction. According to the deintercalation process, the stage transformations could be attributed to irregular deintercalations of the GDICs with disordered stage.
In order to reduce the cost of corrections and time needed for the block assembly process, the reverse setting method is applied for a back-heated block to neutralize deck deformation. The proper reverse setting shape for a back-heated block to correct deformation improved the deck flatness, but an excessive amount of reverse setting could inversely affect the flatness of the block. A prediction method was developed for the proper reverse setting shape using a back-heated block, considering the complex geometry of blocks, thickness of the deck plate, and thermal loading conditions such as welding and back-heating. The prediction method was developed by combining the re-meshing technique and inherent strain-based deformation analysis using the finite element method. Because the flatness deviation was decreased until the lower critical point and thereafter it tended to increase again, the optimum value for which the flatness was the best case was selected by repeatedly calculating the predefined reverse setting values. Based on this analysis and the study of the back-heating deformation of large assembly blocks, including the reverse setting shape, the mechanism for selecting the optimum reverse setting value was identified. The developed method was applied to the actual blocks of a ship, and it was confirmed that the flatness of the block was improved. It is concluded that the developed prediction method can be used to predict the optimum reverse setting shape value of a ship's block, which will reduce the cost of corrections in the construction stage.

We have been investigated the effects of the initial pH of the aquous solution, reaction temperature and time for the flaking of the soda-lime glass container. Flaking of glass occuurred in the cases of the $121^{\circ}C$, above pH 11 of solution with no $Mg^{2+}$ ions in solution. The pH of the solution approached to pH 10 under the conditions of below pH 9 of start solution. The flaking mechanism of the glass seem to be composed of formation of leached layer of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^{2+}$ ion and separation of these layers during the cooling by the difference of thermal expansion between leached layer and glass surface. The leaching of alkali ions in glass depends on the pH condition of the start solution and the temperature. In the case of $Mg^{2+}$ ions are added, $Mg^{2+}$ ions accelerate the flaking of the sodalime glasses and forms the magnesium silicate compound which result in the decrease of the pH of the solution.

Cold acoustic tests have been performed to elucidate the effect of baffle gaps on the optimal damping characteristics in a liquid rocket combustor where coaxial injectors are installed. For several axial baffle lengths, an optimal acoustic damping capacitance has been achieved in a certain gap range. Cold acoustic tests for simulating fluid viscosity by changing the pressure in a model chamber have been done to study the main mechanism of optimal damping. Experimental data have shown that the optimal gap for high damping capacity exists mainly due to the viscosity near the gap of baffles. Therefore, axial baffle length can be reduced by using the optimal baffle gap, providing a possible solution of thermal cooling problems. Also, these optimum characteristics can be some guidelines for manufacturing and assembling injectors in full-scaled rocket combustors.

Lindera obtusiloba has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of lots of diseases, including abdominal pain, bruise, and hepatocirrhosis. Here in this study, we elucidated the lifespan-extending effect of methanolic extract of Lindera obtusiloba (MLO) using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. We found that MLO has potent lifespan extension activities under normal culture condition. Then, we determined the protective effects of MLO on the stress conditions such as osmotic, thermal and oxidative stress. To reveal possible mechanism of MLO-mediated lifespan, we further investigated the effect of MLO on the antioxidant enzyme activities and intracellular ROS levels. Our results demonstrated that superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were significantly up-regulated by MLO treatment, resulted in reduced intracellular ROS levels. In this work, we also tested whether MLO-mediated longevity activity was associated with aging-related factors such as food intake and growth. Our data revealed that both of pharyngeal pumping rate and body length were significantly shifted by MLO treatment, indicating these factors were involved in MLO's lifespan-extension effects. Although MLO induces reduction in food intake, the body movement of MLO-fed aged worms was not decreased, compared to untreated control worms, indicating MLO might extend lifespan without affecting healthspan.

After harvesting the medicinal parts of Curcuma longa, the remaining underground parts were discarded. From the remaining underground parts of Curcuma longa quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside-7-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranoside (Q37) was isolated. The antioxidant activities in vitro and lifespan-extension effect of Q37 were elucidated using the Caenorhabditis elegans. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effect of Q37 showed similar potent activities in comparison with vitamin C. Q37 also showed potent superoxide quenching activities as measured by the riboflavin- and xanthine-originated superoxide quenching activity tests. Q37 prolonged lifespan of worms under normal culture condition. In terms of protective effect of Q37 on the stress conditions such as thermal and oxidative stresses, Q37-treated worms exhibited enhanced survival rate, as compared to control worms. To know the possible mechanism of Q37-mediated increased lifespan and stress resistance of worms, we examined the activities of Q37on superoxide dismutase (SOD), and invested intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The results revealed that Q37 was able to elevate SOD activity of worms and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner.
The microhardness of rhenium sheets was determined as a function of indentation load and temperature. The temperature dependence of the microhardness between room temperatures and $1000 ^{\circ}C$was studied using a hot microhardness tester equipped with a Vickers indenter. The load dependence of the microhardness was investigated using oth a Vickers and a Knoop indenter. The indentation size effect (ISE) was well explained using the normalized Meyers law. The hardness of the annealed rhenium sheet approached that of the as-rolled sheets at large indentation loads because of work-hardening under the indenter during indentation. The hardness at zero load(obtained from extrapolation of the load dependence of the hardness) suggested that the hardness is controlled by two different mech-anisms having different thermal activation. At low temperature the activation energy for the mechanism controlling the hardness was approximately 0.02 eV , Whereas at higher temperatures that was approximately 0.15eV. The tranisi-tion temperature between the two different controlling mechanisms was about $250^{\circ}C$.

The recent extensive research of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures such as nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs) has been the driving force to fabricate new kinds of nanoscale devices in electronics, optics and bioengineering. We attempt to produce silicon oxide nanowires (SiOxNWs) in a simple way without complicate deposition process, gaseous Si containing precursors, or starting material of $SiO_2$. Nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs) were applied on Si wafer and thermally treated in a furnace. The temperature in the furnace was kept in the ranges between 900 and $1,100^{\circ}C$ and a mixture of nitrogen ($N_2$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) flowed through the furnace. The SiOxNWs had widths ranging from 100 to 200 nm with length extending up to ~10 ${\mu}m$ and their structure was amorphous. Ni NPs were acted as catalysts. Since there were no other Si materials introduced into the furnace, the Si wafer was the only Si sources for the growth of SiOxNWs. When the Si wafer with deposition of Ni NPs was heated, the liquid Ni-Si alloy droplets were formed. The droplets as the nucleation sites induce an initiation of the growth of SiOxNWs and absorb oxygen easily. As the droplets became supersaturated, the SiOxNWs were grown, by the reaction between Si and O and continuously dissolving Si and O onto NPs. Photoluminescence (PL) showed that blue emission spectrum was centered at the wavelength of 450 nm (2.76 eV). The details of growth mechanism of SiOxNWs and the effect of Ni NPs on the formation of SiOxNWs will be presented.

We studied a method of manufacturing an anode to restrict contraction in reducing NiO/YSZ by uniformly mixing. In order to mix Ni and YSZ, a sub-micron Ni core surface was coated at high-speed by a mixture of nano-sized YSZ and a spherical core-shell was subsequently formed. The micron-sized core-shell anode powder was then heat treated at $400{\sim}1,450^{\circ}C$ in an air atmosphere and Ni was extruded and synthesized in nano-size. Subsequently, when the nano-sized mixture of the anode was heat treated and maintained at a temperature of $1,450^{\circ}C$, the anode was manufactured, where Ni and YSZ were uniformly distributed with the nano-structure. According to the nano-sized anode powder synthesis process, Ni particles were oxidized at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and became spherical by surface tension. In the case of the spherical core Ni powder, the heat treatment temperature rose to $1,250^{\circ}C$ and then a gap between the internal and external pressures occurred due to thermal and tensile stresses. A crack subsequently appeared on the surface, and the heat treatment temperature was increased continuously to increase the pressure gap and then the core Ni extruded as a nano-sized powder, Ni and YSZ uniformly distributed. It was found that the anode of 50~200 nm with a consistent structure obtained in this study has electric conductivity that is approximately 3 times larger than that of a commercial anode.

Ship builder's requirement for a higher power output rating has lead to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. Usually a large-sized bore ranging from 8-14 cylinders, this engine group is capable of delivering power output of more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. Other positive aspects of this engine type include higher thermal efficiency, reliability, durability and mobility. This all playa vital role in meeting the propulsion requirement of vessels, specifically for large container ships, of which speed is a primary concern to become more competitive. Consequently, this also resulted in the modification of engine parameters and new component designs to meet the consequential higher mean effective pressure and higher maximum combustion pressure. Even though the fundamental excitation mechanism unchanged, torsional vibration stresses in the propulsion shafting are subsequently perceived to be higher. As such, one important viewpoint in the initial engine design is the resulting vibration characteristic expected to prevail on the propulsion shafting system(PSS). This paper investigated the torsional vibration characteristics of these super large engines. For the two node torsional vibration with a nodal point on the crankshaft, a tuning damper is necessary to reduce the torsional stresses on the crankshaft. Hence, the tuning torsional vibration damper design and compatibility to the shafting system was similarly reviewed and analyzed.
