  • In the present research, dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) graphene-reinforced beams under thermal loading has been carried out based on finite element approach. The presented formulation is based on a higher order refined beam element accounting for shear deformations. The graphene-reinforced beam is exposed to transverse periodic mechanical loading. Graphene platelets have three types of dispersion within the structure including uniform-type, linear-type and nonlinear-type. Convergences and validation studies of derived results from finite element approach are also presented. This research shows that the resonance behavior of a nanocomposite beam can be controlled by the GPL content and dispersions. Therefore, it is showed that the dynamical deflections are notably influenced by GPL weight fractions, types of GPL distributions, temperature changes, elastic foundation and harmonic load excitation frequency.

  • This paper deals with the relaxation of singular stresses developed in an epoxy adhesive at high temperature. The interface stresses are analyzed using BEM. The adhesive employed in this study is an epoxy which can be cured at room temperature. The adhesive is assumed to be linearly viscoelastic. First, the distribution of the interface stresses developed in the adhesive layer under the uniform tensile stress has been calculated. The singular stress has been observed near the interface corner. Such singular stresses near the interface corner may cause epoxy layer separated from adherent. Second, the interfacial thermal stress has been investigated. The uniform temperature rise can relieve the stress level developed in the adhesive layer under the external loading, which can be viewed as an advantage of thermal loading. It is also obvious that temperature rise reduces the bonding strength of the adhesive layer. Experimental evaluation is required to assess a trade-off between the advantageous and deleterious effects of temperature.

  • In the present work, a new photothermoelastic model based on Moore-Gibson-Thompson theory has been constructed. The governing equationsfor orthotropic photothermoelastic plate are simplified for two-dimension model. Laplace and Fourier transforms are employed after converting the system of equations into dimensionless form. The problem is examined due to various specified sources. Moving normal force, ramp type thermal source and carrier density periodic loading are taken to explore the application of the assumed model. Various field quantities like displacements, stresses, temperature distribution and carrier density distribution are obtained in the transformed domain. The problem is validated by numerical computation for a given material and numerical obtained results are depicted in form of graphs to show the impact of varioustheories of thermoelasticity along with impact of moving velocity, ramp type and periodic loading parameters. Some special cases are also explored. The results obtained in this paper can be used to design various semiconductor elements during the coupled thermal, plasma and elastic wave and otherfieldsin thematerialscience, physical engineering.

  • During high speed sewing, the needle thread is exposed to dynamic loading, short strike loading, inertia forces, friction, rubbing, force of check spring, bending, pressure, friction, impact, shock and thermal influence. The dynamic thread loading/tension alters throughout the stitch formation cycle and along its passage through the machine. The greatest tensile force occurs at the moment of stitch stretching, when the take up lever pulls for required thread length through the tension regulator. These stresses act on the thread repeatedly and the thread passes 50-80 times through the fabric, the needle eye and the bobbin case mechanism, before getting incorporated into the seam, which result in upto 40% loss in tensile strength of the sewing thread. This damage in the sewing thread adversely affects its processing and functional performance. In this paper, the contribution of dynamic loading, passage through needle and fabric, and bobbin thread interaction in the loss in tensile properties has been studied. It is observed that the loss in tensile properties occurs mainly due to the bobbin thread interaction. Dynamic loading due to the action of take up lever also causes substantial loss in tenacity and breaking elongation of cotton threads.

  • This paper presents experimental investigations of the fundamental behavior of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) beam-columns under fire loading. A total of thirteen specimens were tested to determine the axial force-moment-curvature-temperature behavior of CFT beam-columns. The experimental approach involved the use of: (a) innovative heating and control equipment to apply thermal loading and (b) digital image correlation with close-range photogrammetry to measure the deformations (e.g., curvature) of the heated region. Each specimen was sequentially subjected to: (i) constant axial loading; (ii) thermal loading in the expected plastic hinge region following the ASTM E119 temperature-time T-t curve; and (iii) monotonically increasing flexural loading. The effects of various parameters on the strength and stiffness of CFT beam-columns were evaluated. The parameters considered were the steel tube width, width-tothickness ratio, concrete strength, maximum surface temperature of the steel tube, and the axial load level on the composite CFT section. The experimental results provide knowledge of the fundamental behavior of composite CFT beam-columns, and can be used to calibrate analytical models or macro finite element models developed for predicting behavior of CFT members and frames under fire loading.

  • As the high speed and high integration of semiconductor devices and the generation of heat increases resulted in the effective heat dissipation influences on the performance and lifetime of semiconductor devices. The heat resistance or heat spread function of EMC(epoxy molding compound) which protects these devices became one of very important factors in the evaluation of semiconductor chips. Recently, silica, alumina, AlN(aluminum nitride) powders are widely used as the fillers of EMC. The filler loading in encapsulants was high up to about 80 vol%. A high loading of filler was improved low water absorption, low stress, high strength, better flowability and high thermal conductivity. In this study, the thermal properties were investigated through thermal, mechanical and microstructure. Thermophysical properties were investigated by laser flash and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). For detailed inspection of materials, the samples were examined by SEM.

  • The effect of fumed silica loading on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of fluorosilicone (FVMQ) rubber was investigated. The distribution of fumed silica inside FVMQ was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, and the thermal stability of composites was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and by the changes in mechanical performance during thermo-oxidative aging. The function mechanism of fumed silica was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that with increasing silica content, the crosslink density of composites, the modulus at 100%, and tensile strength also increased, whereas the elongation at break decreased. Furthermore, increasing the silica content of composites increased the initial decomposition temperature (Td) and residual weight of the composite after exposure to nitrogen. In addition, the thermal oxidative aging experiment demonstrated improved aging resistance of the FVMQ composites, including lower change in tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 100%.

  • Cellulose nanofibers from microfibril cellulose (MFC) was prepared by hydrobromic acid (HBr) treatment at different concentrations. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films at various loading level of nanofibers were manufactured by a film casting method. The analysis of degree of polymerization (DP), crystallinity ($X_c$) and molecular weight ($M_w$) of cellulose after acid treatment was conducted. The mechanical and thermal properties of the cellulose nanofibers reinforced PVA films were characterized using tensile tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The DP and $M_w$ of MFC by HBr hydrolysis considerably decreased, but $X_c$ showed no significant change. After acid hydrolysis, the diameter of cellulose nanofibers was in the range of 100 to 200 nm. The thermal stability of the films was steadily improved with the increase of nanofiber loading. There was a significant increase in the tensile strength of PVA composite films with the increase in MFC loading. Finally, 5 wt.% nanofiber loading exhibited the highest tensile strength and thermal stability of PVA composite films.
