  • Fe-Ni has been of great interest because it is known as one of low thermal expansion alloys as various application areas. This alloy was fabricated by electroforming process, and effect of heat treatment on thermal expansion and hardness was investigated. Nano-crystalline structure of 13.3 - 63.5 nm in size was observed in the as-deposited alloy. To investigate the effect of heat treatment on grain growth and mechanical/thermal properties, we conducted hardness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). From this, we confirmed these properties were varied by heat treatment. In this nano-crystalline alloy, we could observe abnormal behavior in thermal expansion between $350-400^{\circ}C$. Additionally, an abrupt change in hardness has also been observed. However, once the grains grow up to micro-sized the mechanical and thermal properties mentioned above were stabilized similar to those of bulk alloys due to heat treatment.

  • As raw materials wollastonite, kaolin and pyrophyllite were used to synthesize mullite, anorthite and pseudowoll-astonite which were known as low thermal expansion substance. Increasing the amount of wollastonite in the composition resulted in a linear thermal expansion behavior. However, the increases of pyrophyllite indicated the relatively unstable themmal expansion behavior, because the phase transition occured in quartz of the pyrophyllite compositon. To lowering sintering temperature feldspar (Kebook and Anyang) were added in the composition that showed the linear thermal expantion behavior, and over 50'C were lowered.

  • To improve resistance in thermal shock of zirconia setter which is frequently and repeatedly exposed to high temperature, high degree of porosity and control of thermal expansion are needed for which the fused CSZ (CaO stabilized zirconia) is used to produce the zirconia setter. In the present study, the effects of sintering temperature, cool down condition, addition of CaO stabilizer, and addition of other additives on phase transition and thermal expansion behavior of the fabrication process of zirconia setter, were examined. The zirconia setter, fabricated with fused CSZ at 1550℃, exhibited 20.4 MPa of flexural strength, 6.8% of absorbance, and 27.9% of apparent porosity. The rapid change in thermal expansion of zirconia setter is observed at temperature around 800℃, and it was reduced by low firing temperature, slowed cooled down, and addition of CaO.

  • Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficients of cordierite ceramics reinforced by SiC whiskers up to 40 vol. % were investigated. The composite specimens were hot pressed at 1523K for 30 min under 28.5 MPa pressing pressure in Ar atmosphere. Thermal expansions of the hot pressed composites were measured using a differential dilatometer up to 1262 K in air. Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficient of the composites increased with SiC whisker content. Thermal expansion behaviors of the composites were well explained by modelling parallel slabs randomly distributed on the whisker plane as the microstructural element of the composites.

  • In the present paper, a variety of fiber reinforcements, for instance, stabilized OXI-PAN fibers, quasi-carbon fibers, commercial carbon fibers, and their woven fabric forms, have been utilized to fabricate pseudo-unidirectional (pseudo-UD) and 2-directional (2D) phenolic matrix composites using a compression molding method. Prior to fabricating quasi-carbon fiber/phenolic (QC/P) composites, stabilized OXI-PAN fibers and fabrics were heat-treated under low temperature carbonization processes to prepare quasi-carbon fibers and fabrics. The thermal conductivity and thermal expansion/contraction behavior of QC/P composites have been investigated and compared with those of carbon fiber/phenolic (C/P) and stabilized fiber/phenolic composites. Also, the chemical compositions of the fibers used have been characterized. The results suggest that use of proper quasi-carbonization process may control effectively not only the chemical compositions of resulting quasi-carbon fibers but also the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior of quasi-carbon fibers/phenolic composites in the intermediate range between stabilized PAN fiber- and carbon fiber-reinforced phenolic composites.

  • Aluminium titanate (Al₂TiO5) with an excellent thermal shock resistant and a low the expansion coefficient was obtained by solid solution with MgO, SiO₂, and ZrO₂ in the Al₂TiO5 lattice or in the grain boundary solution through electrofusion in an arc furnace. However, these materials have low mechanical strength due to the presence of microcracks developed by a large difference in thermal expansion coefficients along crystallographic axes. Pure Al₂TiO5 tends to decompose into α-Al₂O₃ and TiO₂-rutile in the temperature range of 750-1300℃ that rendered it apparently useless for industrial applications. Several thermal shock tests were performed: Long therm thermal annealing test at 1100℃ for 100h; and water quenching from 950 to room temperature (RT). Cyclic thermal expansion coefficients up to 1500℃ before and after decomposition tests was also measured using a dilatometer, changes in the microstructure, thermal expansion coefficients, Young's modulus and strengths were determined. The role of microcracks in relation to thermal shock resistance and thermal expansion coefficient is discussed.

  • Phase stabilized leucite, which has high coefficient of thermal expansion, was synthesized, and its thermal expansion behavior was investigated. The homogeneous leucite phase was synthesized by solid state reaction from the mixture of $K_2CO_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$. and its stabilization from tetragonal to cubic phase was attempted by adding $Cs_2CO_3$ into starting materials. And fine powder with an average particle size of a few hundreds ${\mu}m$ were fabricated by planetary milling. During milling, amorphization of leucite was observed and recrystallized after heat treatment. The thermal expansion behavior of tetragonal and cubic leucite has measured and discussed. The average coefficient of thermal expansion of tetragonal and cubic phase leucite from room temperature to $750^{\circ}C$ was $21.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and $14.5{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Quality control of the concrete pavement in the early stage of curing is very important because it has a conclusive effect on its life span. Therefore, examining and analyzing the initial behavior of concrete pavement must precede an alternative to control its initial behavior. There are largely two influential factors for the initial behavior of concrete pavement. One is the drying shrinkage, and the other is the heat generated by hydration and thermal change inside the pavement depending on the change in the atmospheric temperature. Thus, the coefficient of thermal expansion and drying shrinkage can be regarded as very important influential factors for the initial behavior of the concrete. It has been a general practice up until now to measure the coefficient of thermal expansion from completely cured concrete. This practice has an inherent limitation in that it does not give us the coefficient of thermal expansion at the initial stage of curing. Additionally, it has been difficult to obtain the measurement of drying shrinkage due to the time constraint. This research examined and analyzed the early drying shrinkage of the concrete and measurements of the thermal expansion coefficients to formulate a plan to control its initial behavior. Additionally, data values for the variables of influence were collected to develop a prediction model for the initial behavior of the concrete pavement and the verification of the proposed model. In this research, thermal expansion coefficients of the concrete in the initial stage of curing ranged between $8.9{\sim}10.8{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ Furthermore, the effects of the size and depth of the concrete on the drying shrinkage were analyzed and confirmed.

  • The properties of mechanics and durability of LMC have been performed actively. However, little studies on analysis and properties of thermal expansion has been on the temperature variation. Especially, the low of bonding strength and tensile cracking are caused by difference of thermal expansion between LMC and the substrate concrete. Therefore, this study focused on effect of thermal expansion behavior and properties of LMC according to temperature variation. To identify the property of thermal expansion of LMC, tests of modulus of thermal expansion were carried out at 28 days after casting specimen, subjected to temperature variation between $10^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. The results of this study showed the modulus of elastic of LMC was similar to that of ordinary portland concrete(OPC). It means that stresses caused by difference of modulus of elastic did not occur on interface between LMC and existing concrete. The modulus of thermal expansion of LMC had a little smaller than that of OPC. The modulus of thermal expansion of polymer modified concrete is generally larger than OPC, but the result of this test is disagree with the fact, which may be due to the humidity evaporation difference and aggregate properties.
