  • In this paper, the nonlocal integral Timoshenko beam model is employed to study the free vibration characteristics of singled walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) including the thermal effect. Based on the nonlocal continuum theory, the governing equations of motion are formulated by considering thermal effect. The influences of small scale parameter, the chirality of SWCNTs, the vibrational mode number, the aspect ratio of SWCNTs and temperature changes on the thermal vibration properties of single-walled nanotubes are examined and discussed. Results indicate significant dependence of natural frequencies on the nonlocal parameter, the temperature change, the aspect ratio and the chirality of SWCNTs. This work should be useful reference for the application and the design of nanoelectronics and nanoelectromechanical devices that make use of the thermal vibration properties of SWCNTs.

  • Purpose: Thermal sensation or thermal comfort was randomly used in many studies which focused on combined effects of thermal and acoustic environments on human perception. However, thermal sensation and thermal comfort are not synonyms. Thermal comfort is more complex human perception on thermal environment than thermal sensation. This study aims to investigate effects of noise on thermal sensation and thermal comfort separately, and also to investigate effects of temperature on acoustic sensation and comfort. Method: Combined thermal and acoustic configurations were simulated in an indoor environmental chamber. Twenty four participants were exposed to two types of noise (fan and babble) with two noise levels (45 dBA and 60 dBA) for an hour in each thermal condition of PMV-1.53, 0.03, 1.53, 1.83, respectively. Temperature sensation, temperature preference, thermal comfort, noisiness, loudness, annoyance, acoustic comfort, indoor environmental comfort were evaluated in each combined environmental condition. Result: Noise did not affected thermal sensation, but thermal comfort significantly. Temperature had an effect on acoustic comfort significantly, but no effect on noisiness and loudness in overall data analysis. More explicit interactions between thermal condition and noise perception showed only with the noise level of 60 dBA. Impacts of both thermal comfort and acoustic comfort on the indoor environmental comfort were analyzed. In adverse thermal environments, thermal comfort had more impact than acoustic comfort on indoor environmental comfort, and in neutral thermal environments, acoustic comfort had more important than thermal comfort.

  • A ground-loop heat exchanger in a ground source heat pump system is an important unit that determines the thermal performance of a system and its initial cost. The size and performance of this heat exchanger is highly dependent on ground thermal properties. A proper design requires certain site-specific parameters, most importantly the ground effective thermal conductivity, the borehole thermal resistance and the undisturbed ground temperature. This study was performed to investigate the effect of some parameters such as borehole lengths, various grouting materials and U-tube configurations on ground effective thermal conductivity. In this study, thermal response tests were conducted using a testing device with 9-different ground-loop heat exchangers. From the experimental results, the length of ground-loop heat exchanger affects to the effective thermal conductivity. Among the various grouting materials, the bentonite-based grout with silica sand shows the largest thermal conductivity value.

  • Geothermal heat pump(GHP) systems use vertical borehole heat exchangers to transfer heat to and from the surrounding ground via a heat carrier fluid that circulates between the borehole and the heat pump. An Important feature associated with design parameters and system performance is the local thermal resistances between the heat carrier flow channels in the borehole and the surrounding ground. This paper deals with the in-situ experimental determination of the effective thermal properties of the ground. The recorded thermal responses together with the line-source theory are used to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, and the steady-state borehole thermal resistance. In addition, this paper compares the experimental borehole resistance with the results from the different empirical and theoretical relations to evaluate this resistance. Further, the performance simulation of a GHP system with vertical borehole heat exchangers was conducted to analyze the effect of the borehole thermal resistance on the system performance.

  • In this study, Mg-Zn alloys are investigated in terms of their thermal properties after an addition of Cu. Al element is added to improve the mechanical properties and castability in general case. However, it was excluded here because it significantly decreases the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Zn was added as a major element, which had less influence on reducing the conductivity and can complement the mechanical properties as well. Cu was also added, and it improved the heat transfer characteristics as the amount was increased. The composition ranges of Zn and Cu are 6 wt.% and 0~1.5 wt.%, respectively. Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy was prepared by a gravity casting method using a steel mold and then the thermal conductivity and the microstructure of the as-cast material were investigated. By measuring the density_(${\rho}$), specific heat_(Cp) and thermal diffusivity_(${\alpha}$), the thermal conductivity_(${\lambda}$) was calculated by the equation ${\lambda}={\rho}{\cdot}Cp{\cdot}{\alpha}$. As the amount of Cu increased in the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, the heat transfer characteristics were improved, resulting in a synergistic effect which is slow when the added Cu exceeds 1 wt.%. In order to investigate the relative thermal conductivity/emission of the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, AZ91 and AZ31 were experimentally evaluated and compared using a separate test equipment. As a result, the Mg-6Zn-1.5Cu alloy when compared to AZ91 showed improvements in the thermal conductivity ranging from 30 to 60% with a nearly 20% improvement in the thermal emission.

  • This numerical study was to investigate the effect of $CO_2$ addition on the structures and NOx formation characteristics in $CH_4$ counterflow diffusion flame. The importance of radiation effect was identified and $CO_2$ addition effect was investigated in terms of thermal and chemical reaction effect. Also the causes of NOx reduction were clarified by separation method of each formation mechanisms. The results were as follows : The radiation effect was intensified by $CO_2$ addition. Thermal effect mainly contributed to the changes in flame structure and the amount of NO formation but the chemical reaction effect also cannot be neglected. The reduction of thermal NO was dominant with respect to reduction rate, but that of prompt NO was dominant with respect to total amount.

  • An effectiveness of thermal utilization of a dousing system in the 600 MW PHWR Nuclear Power Plant has been evaluated. The behavior and conditions of water droplet sprayed in a postulated accident conditions in containment configuration has been calculated. In this calculation, two pressure conditions with the consideration of obstruction area and containment wall effect has been established : one being the minimum containment pressure of 7 kPa(g) encountered for dousing shut off and the other being the containment design pressure 124 kPa(g). The results revealed that the effectiveness of the thermal utilization ranges from 93% to 97%. In the analysis on two cases without/with side wall effect in the containment building, the thermal utilization decreases with obstruction area from 89% to 85%, which satisfies the design criteria set for the containment pressure against the accident condition.

  • The solar shading height for the cultivation of plants is a very important factor because it has an effect on the variations of the solar energy. In this study, the solar shadings were built in Daegu region to investigate the optimum thermal conditions for the cultivation of plants and to provide the basic data. The thermal environment factors (dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, air velocity) were then measured and analyzed. It is found that the heights of the solar shadings have an uniform effect on the thermal environment for the cultivation of plants: the higher the heights of the solar shadings the higher temperature was obtained. But surprisingly this trend was not found for the relative humidity and the air velocity.
