Al-pillared clay was synthesized by constructing pillars of aluminum oxides at the interlayer of montmorillonite in bentonite. XRD, DTA and chemical analyses of Al-pillared clay were performed to examine mineralogical properties. Batch adsorption experiments were also conducted to determine the adsorption properties of this synthesized clay for phosphate ions. XRD analyses showed that the interlayer space of Al-pillared clay expanded to 18.03 $\AA$ at room temperature and shifted to $17 \AA$ after heating to $550^{\circ}C$. A small change in interlayer space after heating indicates high thermal stability. The interlayer expansion by glycerol was also very small. From DTA analyses, pillared clay showed the characteristic endothermic peaks at 270 and $420^{\circ}C$ , which might be caused by dehydration in framework of pillars between interlayers. Adsorption experiment revealed that Al-pillared clay had an excellent adsorption capacity to the phosphate ions, whereas montmorillonite had very low adsorption capacity to phosphate ions. In phosphate solution concentration up to 300 mg/L, 2 g of pillared clay could uptake almost 100% of phosphate ions from 20 mL of solution. After heat treatment of the phosphate adsorbed pillared clay at 50$0^{\circ}C$ to remove phosphate, the calcined pillared clay could adsorb phosphate ions with a little decreased adsorption efficiency. This fact indicates that Al-pillared clay can be recycled for the adsorption of phosphate ions.
Noerok ia a green pigment used in Joseon dynasty, and its main usage was for forming foundation layers of Dancheong, the ornamental paintings on the surface of traditional buildings in Korea, such as the Daeung-jeon(main hall) of Bulguk-sa temple. In this research, we investigated the mineralogical characteristic changes of Noerok, a traditional Korean pigment, depending on its firing temperature. The Noerok that we experimented on was mined from Noeseong Mountain, Pohang where it is locally reserved. The major composition mineral is Celadonite, and the main constituent elements are Fe, Si, K and Mg, that refers to the existence of Fe-rich mica. As a result of phased firing experiment from $105^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$, the color was changed from green to pale green, then to brown, and finally to red in order. In the thermal analysis, endothermic reaction induced by the dehydration of crystalline water was confirmed at around $616^{\circ}C$. In the mineralogical change, the crystal surface [($11{\bar{1}}$) and ($02{\bar{1}}$)] of the mineral collapsed at temperatures above $600^{\circ}C$, and iron oxide was formed at $1000^{\circ}C$ or higher. Therefore, it is estimated that the crystallization temperature of Noerok is below $600^{\circ}C$, and it is also considered that it has undergone the alteration phase up to stage I, based on the presence of only a celadonite.
To maintain the microbiological safety of Prunus mume fruit before it is processed, it was treated with a combination of 0.5% citric acid and 0.1% Tween 20, and stored at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The combined treatment reduced total aerobic bacteria, yeast, and mold populations in the fruit by 2.20 and 1.70 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to those in the control. Organic acid contents and the Hunter $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values were not affected by the treatment during the storage. In addition, the dried Prunus mume fruit prepared with 40% red algae extract (RAE) or maltodextrin (MD) treatment and hot-air drying were compared with respect to the fruit's physicochemical properties such as color, total phenolic and flavonoid content, and microstructure. The hot-air dried samples had undesirable color changes and inferior textures. The RAE-treated samples had a higher total phenolic content (225.15 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g) and total flavonoid content (49.25 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/100 g) than the other treatments. The treatment of Prunus mume fruit with RAE can provide better-dried products than can MD treatment or hot-air drying. These results suggest that the combined treatment with citric acid and Tween 20 can be effective in preserving the microbiological safety of Prunus mume fruit, and its dehydration using RAE is an efficient drying method.
Background: Workers laboring in steel industries in tropical settings with high ambient temperatures are subjected to thermally stressful environments that can create well-known risks of heat-related illnesses and limit workers' productivity. Methods: A cross-sectional study undertaken in a steel industry in a city nicknamed "Steel City" in Southern India assessed thermal stress by wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and level of dehydration from urine color and urine specific gravity. A structured questionnaire captured self-reported heat-related health symptoms of workers. Results: Some 90% WBGT measurements were higher than recommended threshold limit values ($27.2-41.7^{\circ}C$) for heavy and moderate workloads and radiational heat from processes were very high in blooming-mill/coke-oven ($67.6^{\circ}C$ globe temperature). Widespread heat-related health concerns were prevalent among workers, including excessive sweating, fatigue, and tiredness reported by 50% workers. Productivity loss was significantly reported high in workers with direct heat exposures compared to those with indirect heat exposures ($x^2=26.1258$, degrees of freedom = 1, p < 0.001). Change in urine color was 7.4 times higher among workers exposed to WBGTs above threshold limit values (TLVs). Conclusion: Preliminary evidence shows that high heat exposures and heavy workload adversely affect the workers' health and reduce their work capacities. Health and productivity risks in developing tropical country work settings can be further aggravated by the predicted temperature rise due to climate change, without appropriate interventions. Apart from industries enhancing welfare facilities and designing control interventions, further physiological studies with a seasonal approach and interventional studies are needed to strengthen evidence for developing comprehensive policies to protect workers employed in high heat industries.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a sensitive approach to detect and to identify a variety of molecules. To enhance the Raman signal, optimization of the gap between nanostructures is quite important. One-dimensional materials such as nanowires, nanotubes, and nanograsses have great potential to be used in SERS due to their unique sizes and shape dependent characteristics. In this study we investigate a simple way to fabricate SERS substrates based on randomly grown copper oxide (CuO) nanowires. CuO nanograss is fabricated on pre-cleaned Cu foils. Cu oxidized in an ammonium ambient solution of 2.5 M NaOH and 0.1 M $(NH_4)_2S_2O_8$ at $4^{\circ}C$ for 10, 30, and 60 minutes. Then, Cu(OH)2 nanostructures are formed and dried at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. With the drying process, the Cu(OH)2 nanostructure is transformed to CuO nanograss by dehydration reaction. CuO nanograss are grown randomly on Cu foil with the average length of 10 ${\mu}m$ and the average diameter of a 100 nm. CuO nanograsses are covered by Ag with various thicknesses from 10 to 30 nm using a thermal evaporator. Then, we immerse uncoated and Ag coated CuO nanowire samples of various oxidation times in a 0.001M methanol-based 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) in order to evaluate SERS enhancement. Raman shift and SERS enhancement are measured using a Raman spectrometer (Horiba, LabRAM ARAMIS Spectrometer) with the laser wavelength of 532 nm. Raman scattering is believed to be enhanced by the interaction between CuO nanograss and Ag island film. The gaps between Ag covered CuO nanograsses are diverse from <10 nm at the bottom to ~200 nm at the top of nanograsses. SERS signal are improved where the gaps are minimized to near 10s of nanometers. There are many spots that provide sufficiently narrow gap between the structures on randomly grown CuO nanograss surface. Then we may find optimal enhancement of Raman signal using the mapping data of average results. Fabrication of CuO nanograss based on a solution method is relatively simple and fast so this result can potentially provide a path toward cost effective fabrication of SERS substrate for sensing applications.
Effects of different drying processes, such as hot air drying (HA), superheated steam with hot air drying (SHS/HA), and superheated steam with far infrared radiation (SHS/FIR), on the properties of cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) were studied. Characteristics of dried cherry tomatoes were determined by examining the water content, internal microstructure, and rehydration capacity under different drying processes. Moreover, ascorbic acid (AA) and lycopene levels were also measured to evaluate thermal damage caused by drying. Cherry tomatoes dried using both SHS/HA and SHS/FIR had water content and water activity similar to those of intermediate moisture food, indicating partial dehydration after combined drying processes. Although AA and lycopene levels decreased drastically after drying, tomatoes dried using SHS/FIR showed the lowest losses of AA and lycopene among samples. Cherry tomatoes dried using SHS/FIR showed a less compact internal cell structure than that of cherry tomatoes dried using HA and SHS/HA, resulting in the highest rehydration capacity. These results suggest that a combined drying process such as SHS/FIR is more effective than conventional hot air drying for the production of partially dried cherry tomatoes with improved quality attributes.
The equilibrium pressure-temperature curve of the reaction: 6 Ca$_2$Al$_3$(OH)Si$_3$O$_{12}$=6 CaAl$_2$Si$_2$O$_{8}$+2 Ca$_3$Al$_2$Si$_3$O$_{12}$+Al$_2$O$_3$+3 H$_2$O zoisite anorthite grossularite corundum was experimentally determined using both externally and internally heated pressure vessels in the pressure range of 2-4 kbar. Synthetic zoisite, anorthite, grossularite and corundum were used as starting materials. Starting materials were synthesized at 13-16 kbar using the piston-cylinder apparatus. The dehydration temperature of zoisite at 2 kbar is 550${\pm}$12$^{\circ}C$ and at 4 kbar is 575${\pm}$20$^{\circ}C$. Low thermal stability of synthetic zoisite relative to natural zoisite at 4 kbar is attributed to the structural disorder of synthetic anorthite.
