  • We have used FT-IR spectra to explain the effects of hydrogen bonding between chitosan and polycaprolactam (PA6). A dynamic mechanical analysis study suggested that the optimum chitosan and PA6 miscibility under the conditions of this experiment were obtained at a blending ratio of 40:60. We studied the thermal degradation of chitosan blended with PA6 (chitosan/PA6) by thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic analysis (by the Ozawa method). Dry chitosan and PA6 exhibited a single stage of thermal degradation and chitosan/PA6 blends having> 20 wt% PA6 exhibited at least two stages of degradation. In chitosan/PA6 blends, chitosan underwent the first stage of thermal degradation; the second stage proceeded at a temperature lower than that of PA6, because the decomposition product of chitosan accelerated the degradation of PA6. The activation energies of the blends were between 130 and 165 kJ/mol, which are also lower than that of PA6.

  • The thermal degradation of poly(hexamethylene guanidine) phosphate (PHMG) was studied by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-GC/MS (p-GC). Thermal degradation of PHMG occurs in three different processes, such as dephosphorylation, sublimation/vaporization of amine compounds and decomposition/ recombination of hydrocarbon residues. The kinetic parameters of each stage were calculated from the Kissinger, Friedman and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The Chang method was also used for comparison study. To investigate the degradation mechanisms of the three different stages, the Coats-Redfern and the Phadnis-Deshpande methods were employed. The probable degradation mechanism for the first stage was a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type. However, a power law and a diffusion mechanism, $D_n$ type, were operated for the second degradation stage, whereas a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type, were operated again for the third degradation stage of PHMG. The theoretical weight loss against temperature curves, calculated by the estimated kinetic parameters, well fit the experimental data, thereby confirming the validity of the analysis method used in this work. The life-time predicted from the kinetic equation is a valuable guide for the thermal processing of PHMG.

  • The thermal degradation of polyethylene has been studied using a nonisothermal thermogravimetric technique under a nitrogen atmosphere condition at several heating rates from 10 to $50^{\circ}C/min$. To obtain information on the kinetic parameters, the dynamic thermogravimetric analysis curve and its derivative have been analyzed by a variety of analytical methods such as Kissinger, Freeman-Carroll, Flynn-Wall, Coats-Redfern, Chatterjee-Conrad, Friedman, Horowitz-Metzger, Ozawa and Denq methods. The comparative works for the kinetic results obtained from various methods should be performed to determine the kinetic parameters, because three are tremendous differences in the calculated kinetic parameters depending upon the mathematical method taken in the analysis. From this work, it was found that the apparent activation energy of HDPE was larger than those of LDPE and LLDPE.

  • The kinetics of the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane (PU) according to oxygen concentration has been studied using a non-isothermal thermogravimetric technique at several heating rates from 10 to $50^{\circ}C/min$. A kinetic model accounting for the effects of the oxygen concentration by the differential and integral method based on Arrhenius equation was proposed to describe the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste PU. To obtain the information on the kinetic parameters such as activation energy, reaction order, and pre-exponential factor, the thermogravimetric analysis curves and its derivatives have been analyzed using the kinetic analysis method proposed in this work. From this work, it was found that reaction orders for oxygen concentration had a negative sign, and activation energy decreased as the oxygen concentration increased. It was also found that the kinetic parameters obtained from the integral method using the single heating rate experiments varied with heating rates. Therefore, it is thought that the differential method using the multiple heating rate experiments more effectively represents the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane.

  • The thermal degradation of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)(ABS) terpolymer as well as their mixtures were carried out using the thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) in the stream of nitrogen and air with 50 ml/min at the various heating rate from 4 to $20^{\circ}C/min$ and temperature from 200 to $300^{\circ}C$ The values of activation energies of thermal degradation determined by TG and DSC in the various PMMA/ABS mixtures were $34{\sim}58Kcal/mol,\;35{\sim}54Kcal/mol$ in the stream of nitrogen. The values of activation energy of ABS20% mixture was appeared high in camparison with addition rule. According to increasing the composition of ABS, the temperatures of glass transition and initial decomposition temperature were increased. PMMA/ABS mixtures by the analysis of infrared spectrophotometer were decomposed by main chain scission in the stream of nitrogen.

  • The thermal degradation kinetics of SBR and tire were studied using a conventional thermogravimetric analysis in the stream nitrogen at a heating rate of 5, 10, 15, $20^{\circ}C/min$, respectively. Thermogravimetric curves and their derivatives were analyzed using various analytical methods to determine the kinetic parameters. The degradation of the SBR and tire was found to be a complex process which has multi-stages. The Friedman method gave average activation energies for the SBR and tire of 247.53kJ/mol and 230.00kJ/mol, respectively. Mean-while, the Ozawa method Eave 254.80kJ/mol and 215.76kJ/mol. It would appear that either. Friedman's differential method or Ozawa's integral method provided satisfactory mathematical approaches to determine the kinetic parameters for the degradation of the SBR and tire. Approximately 86% and 55% of oil products were obtained at a final temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C/min$ for the SBR and tire respectively.

  • The kinetic analysis was carried out for commercial rubbers such as NR, IR, BR, SBR 1500, and SBR 1700. Kinetic analysis for the commercial rubbers was performed using the thermogravimetric method, with which the activation energies of NR obtained by Kissinger, Friedman, and Ozawa's method were 195.0, 198.3 and 186.3kJ/mol, whereas that of SBR 1500 were 246.4, 247.5 and 254.8kJ/mol, respectively. It was shown that the yield of pyrolytic oil was generally increased with final temperature increasing, yet slightly decreased or increased over $700^{\circ}C$. Considering the effect of heating rate, it was found that the yield of pyrolytic oil was not consistent for each sample. The number average molecular weight of SBR 1500 was in the range of 740~2486. The calorific value of SBR 1500 was 39~40kJ/g, which were made comparative study of the conventional fuel such as kerosene, diesel, light fuel, and heavy fuel. Therefore it was essential that the selection of the suitable kinetic model and the mathematical solution because of the difference in parameters obtained from each method. It was proposed that the range of $600~700^{\circ}C$ in final temperature and high heating rate due to short run time. It was suggested that the pyrolytic oil be available to use to the fuel.

  • Thermal degradation behavior of CR (chloroprene) -modified NR (natural rubber) compounds, having different sulfur/accelerator compositions, was studied by non-isothermal TGA method. Data were analyzed using both Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa analysis to assess the activation energies. Activation energy obtained from Kissinger analysis was $147.0{\pm}2.0$ kJ/mol for all samples, showing little effect of sulfur/accelerator composition changes in the samples. On the other hand, activation energy from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa analysis exhibited much variations with conversion, showing average value of $211.6{\pm}19.0$ kJ/mol. From the results, it was considered that whole thermal degradation processes of the samples were composed of complex multiple step processes, of which reaction mechanisms were different from each other.
