  • Effect of thermal cycling on shape memory effect and stabilization of austenite was investigated in Fe-21%Mn alloy. The thermal cyclic treatment was carried out with two types, room temperature${\leftrightarrow}215^{\circ}C$ and room temperature${\leftrightarrow}260^{\circ}C$. In case of the room temperature${\leftrightarrow}215^{\circ}C$, the SME was rapidly increased up to 3 cycles and maintained nearly constant value regardless of further cycles. In case of the room temperature${\leftrightarrow}260^{\circ}C$, however, the SME was increased with increasing the thermal cycle up to 5 cycles and decreased gradually with further cycle. The variation of the ${\varepsilon}$ martensite volume pet with the thermal cycle was in good agreement with the variation of the SME. Therefore, the change of the SME due to the cyclic treatment was explained with the change of the ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content. As the thermal cycle was increased, the $M_s$ temperature was decreased, and the $A_s$ and $A_f$ temperatures were increased, respectively.

  • The thermal coefficient of concrete is measured using dilatometer (AASHTO TP60) and strain gage. Testing parameters such as six different coarse aggregate types, cycles of warming and cooling, specimen shape and measurement types were investigated to evaluate the influencing factors for thermal coefficient of concrete. According to experimental results, the thermal coefficient of concrete made with crushed aggregate showed 9.2 -10.$\mu\varepsilon/^{\circ}C$, , however recycled coarse aggregate classified type II showed a little increasing in comparison with crushed aggregate. The thermal coefficient of concrete made with recycled aggregate was reduced 0.2-0.4$\mu\varepsilon/^{\circ}C$, under temperature cycles. However, specimen shapes were revealed as mainly affecting factors on the thermal coefficient of concrete. Finally the thermal coefficient value determined by the dilatometer device was shown to be similar to the value from PML 60.

  • This study investigate changes in mechanical behaviors such as indentation load-displacement and hardness of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) using cycling of thermal shock test. Relatively dense and porous TBCs on nickel-based bondcoat/super alloy are prepared using different starting granules, 204C-NS and 204NS commercial powers, and the effect of double layers of 204C-NS on 204NS and 204NS on 204C-NS are investigated. The highest temperature applied during thermal shock test is $1100^{\circ}C$ and the maximum number of cycles is 1,200. The results indicate that bilayered TBC showed a relatively mechanically resistant property during thermal shock cycles and that the mechanical behavior is influenced by the microstructure of TBCs by exposure to high temperature during tests or different starting granules.

  • Several paraffins(CnH2n +2) can be used as the thermal energy storage medium because of their large amount of latent heat and their flexibility of phase change temperature. But they have not been used in the thermal energy storage system because their long term stability have not been verified. Paraffins(CnH2n+2) which the values of n are 23, 24, 26 and 28 were selected for this experimental research. And this research was peformed to apply them to the practical systems. The results were summarized as follows. (1) The increase of phase change cycles had no effect on their phase change temperatures. (2) According as the values of n increased from 23 to 28, the specific heats of paraffins(CnH2n+2) increased, and were in the range of 0.47 0.75 ㎉/$kg^circ C$. (3) Thermal conductivities of them were in the range of 0.14 0.17 W/$m^circ C$. and specific gravities of them were in the range of 765800 kg/m3. (4) The density of paraffins was in the range of 765 800 kg/$m^circ C$ , and the density of solid phase was larger than that of liquid phase. (5) When the number of phase change cycles was 1, 500 cycles, the latent heat of paraffins was 90% of the initial value.

  • This research addresses study on thermal residual stress of a composite patch repair of the edge cracked aluminium panel of aging aircraft. Composite patch repair is an efficient and economical technique to improve the damage tolerance of cracked metallic structures. These are thermal residual stresses due to the mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion, and these are affected by the curing cycle of patch specimen. In this study, three curing cycles were selected for F.E. analysis. This study features the effect on composite patch and aluminum by thermal residual stress during crack propagation in aluminum plate.

  • Thermal and mechanical stresses, caused by repetitive start and stop and load fluctuation during long time operation, on winding stator bars are one of the main causes for electrical degradation of insulating materials. To understand the degradation process, we manufactured bar specimens with the same processes that make generator winding stator bars and the specimens were subjected to various degrees of thermal cycling. Measurements of the insulation properties, such as dissipation factor, tip-up and partial discharge, for un-aged specimens and for specimens aged by thermal cycling at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 thermal cycles were performed. Finally all specimens were tested to obtain electrical breakdown voltages. In this paper we present the data and electrical degradation analysis results obtained during this program.

  • Three dimensional thermal cycle analysis of the plunger is carried out in repeated forming process of the TV glass, which is continued work of two dimensional analysis where an efficient method has been proposed. The plunger undergoes temperature fluctuation during a cycle due to the repeated contact and separation from the glass, which attains a cyclic steady state having same temperature history at every cycle. Straightforward analysis of this problem brings about more than 90 cycles to get reasonable solution. An exponential function fitting method is proposed, which finds exponential function to best approximate temperature values of 3 consecutive cycles, and new cycle is restarted with the fitted value at infinite time. Number of cases are analyzed using the proposed method and compared to the result of straightforward repetition, from which one finds that the method always reaches nearly convergent solution within $9{\sim}12$ cycles, but turns around afterwards without further convergence. Two step use is found most efficient, in which the exponential fitting is carried out fer the first 12 cycles, followed by simple repetition, which shows fast convergence expending only 6 additional cycles to get the accuracy within 2 error. This reduces the computation cycle remarkably from 90 to 18, which is 80% reduction. From the parametric studies, one reveals that the overall thermal behavior of the plunger in terms of cooling parameters and time is similar to that of 2 dimensional analysis.

  • An efficient method is developed for plunger thermal cycle analysis in repeated forming process of the TV glass. The plunger undergoes temperature fluctuation during a cycle due to the repeated contact and separation from the glass, which attains a cyclic steady state having same temperature history at every cycle. Straightforward analysis of this problem brings about more than 80 cycles to get reasonable solution, and yet hard to setup stopping criteria due to extremely slow convergence. An exponential fitting method is proposed to overcome the difficulty, which finds exponential function to best approximate temperature values of 3 consecutive cycles, and new cycle is restarted with the fitted value at infinite time. Numerical implementation shows that it reduces the number of cycles dramatically to only 6-18 cycles to reach convergence within 10 accuracy. A system for the analysis is constructed, in which the thermal analysis is performed by commercial software ANSYS, and the fitting of the result is done by IMSL library. From the parametric studies, one reveals some important facts that although the plunger cooling or the glass thickness is increased, its counter part in contact is not much affected, duo to the low thermal conductance of the glass.

  • An apparatus was developed to repetitively apply a $-196^{\circ}C$ thermal load to coupon-sized mechanical test specimens. Using this device, IM7/5250-4 (carbon / bismaleimide) cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates were submerged in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) 400 times. Ply-by-ply micro-crack density, laminate modulus, and laminate strength were measured as a function of thermal cycles. Quasi-isotropic samples of IM7/977-3 (carbon / epoxy) composite were also manually cycled between liquid nitrogen and an oven set at $120^{\circ}C$ for 130 cycles to determine whether including elevated temperature in the thermal cycle significantly altered the degree or location of micro-cracking. In response to thermal cycling, both materials micro-cracked extensively in the surface plies fellowed by sparse cracking of the inner plies. The tensile modulus of the IM7/5250-4 specimens was unaffected by thermal cycling, but the tensile strength of two of the lay-ups decreased by as much as 8.5%.
