  • To investigate tea prepared from Ixeris dentata root, color, and levels of free sugars, organic acids, cynaroside, total polyphenolics, and free amino acids were investigated using various thermal processing methods. These included natural drying(ND), hot-air drying(HAD, $75^{\circ}C$), hot-air drying after steam(HADS, steaming at $95^{\circ}C$ for 30 min) and roasting after hot-air drying(RHAD, roasting at $140^{\circ}C$ for $2{\sim}3$ min). Total free sugars, organic acids, cynaroside, and free amino acids contents were highest after ND treatment. Total polyphenolics was highest after RHAD processing. The level of cynaroside, a principal component of Ixeris dentata root, was significantly decreased by HADS. The major free sugars were fructose, glucose and sucrose. Succinic acid was prominent among organic acids, and was present at 2.25%(v/v) after ND treatment. The lightness(L), redness(a), and yellowness(b) of all dried Ixeris dentata root powders were best after RHAD treatment, but analysis of the leaching liquids after hot water treatment yielded variable results. Lightness and redness were the highest after RHAD and yellowness was the highest after ND treatment. Overall, the RHAD drying method was found to be superior to other methods, in sensory evaluation tests.

  • In recent years, solar cells based on crystalline silicon(c-Si) have accounted for much of the photovoltaic industry. The recent studies have focused on fabricating c-Si solar modules with low cost and improved efficiency. Among many suggested methods, a photovoltaic module with a shingled structure that is connected to a small cut cell in series is a recent strong candidate for low-cost, high efficiency energy harvesting systems. The shingled structure increases the efficiency compared to the module with 6 inch full cells by minimizing optical and electrical losses. In this study, we propoese a new Conductive Paste (CP) to interconnect cells in a shingled module and compare it with the Electrical Conductive Adhesives (ECA) in the conventional module. Since the CP consists of a compound of tin and bismuth, the module is more economical than the module with ECA, which contains silver. Moreover, the melting point of CP is below $150^{\circ}C$, so the cells can be integrated with decreased thermal-mechanical stress. The output of the shingled PV module connected by CP is the same as that of the module with ECA. In addition, electroluminescence (EL) analysis indicates that the introduction of CP does not provoke additional cracks. Furthermore, the CP soldering connects cells without increasing ohmic losses. Thus, this study confirms that interconnection with CP can integrate cells with reduced cost in shingled c-Si PV modules.

  • PA66/EPDM/PP-g-MA and PA66/EPDM-g-MA/PP-g-MA composites were manufactured by a modular intermeshing twin screw extruder for enhanced low temperature impact resistance with different content of PP-g-MA. The results showed that composite containing 90 wt% of PA66, 8 wt% of EPDM-g-MA, and 2 wt% of PP-g-MA has a optimum value in the thermal and mechanical properties. The characteristics of the composites were analyzed by TGA, DSC, and SEM. From above results, we established that the low interfacial strength and the impact resistance at low temperature shown in a pre-existing PP/EPDM composite were enhanced by grafting with compatibilizer such as maleic anhydride. These results show the possibility of local manufacturing process and cost down with optimum screw configuration for best mixing quality in the twin screw extruder.

  • The deterioration of the urban heat environment due to climate change and the occurrence of heat-related diseases have emerged as one of the major social problems. This has led to more research on climate change, including heat waves, but it is mainly focused on climate factors. However, the urban heat island phenomenon accelerates the summer heat wave, and the increasing trend of heat-related patients in urban areas suggests the impact of the city's environment. Thus, this study analyzed the effects of physical and social characteristics of urban areas on heat-related patients in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The analysis showed that the ratio of the total area of residential, commercial and industrial facilities, the main source of heat energy locality, among the land use statuses, was not statistically significant, but the road area and the green area were found to have a positive and negative The population density and the percentage of people aged 65 or older, the percentage of people living alone and the proportion of people receiving basic living were all shown to be significant, with only the ratio of elderly living alone and the ratio of population density having negative effects. The results of the study can be used to develop urban policy alternatives related to local warming patients.

  • Inorganic pigments have been received a great attention for various applications including paint, glazed ceramic ink, art tile, and building exterior due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. Traditionally, the compositions of $PbCrO_4$, CdS and CdSe have been widely used as a yellow inorganic pigment. However, the use of these compositions has been restricted in recent years, because they contain harmful elements such as Cd, Cr, Pb and Se. In this study, new environment-friendly ceria-based pigment was synthesized using solid state reaction. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained $Ce_{1-x}Zr_xBi_yO_{2-y/2}$ yellow pigment were analyzed using XRD and SEM, respectively. Substitutional effect of Zr and Bi on the pigment color was analyzed using UV-vis. spectrophotometer and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ analysis. The crystal structure of the obtained pigments was dependent on the calcination temperature. The color characteristics and absorption band of the pigments were dependent on the calcination temperature and Zr, Bi contents. As a result, all the obtained yellow pigments showed the effective absorption ranged from ultraviolet to visible light, and $Ce_{0.44}Zr_{0.36}Bi_{0.20}O_{0.19}$ (x = 0.36, y = 0.20) pigment showed the most brilliant yellow color.

  • Recently, the applications of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become broader than ever when it comes to such industries as automotive, ships, aerospace and military because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. Thermosetting plastics like epoxy are frequently used as the binding matrix in CFRPs due to their high hardness, wetting characteristics and low viscosity. However, they cannot melted and remolded. For this reason, thermosetting plastic wastes have caused serious environmental problems with the production of fiber reinforced plastics. Thus, many studies have focused on the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) and recycling carbon fiber. In this study, recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was prepared from CFRPs using a pyrolysis method, which was employed to separate resin and carbon fiber. The degree of decomposition for epoxy resin was confirmed from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The RCF was cut and ground to prepare a carbon fiber composite sheet (CFCS). CFCS was manufactured by applying recycled carbon fibers and various thermoplastic fibers. Various characterizations were performed, including morphological analyses of surface and cross-section, mechanical properties, and crystallization enthalpy of CFCS at different cooling conditions.

  • Silicon Carbide(SiC) has large advantage in high temperature and high voltage applications because of its high thermal conductivity and large band gap energy. When using SiC to design power semiconductor devices, edge termination techniques have to be adjusted for its maximum breakdown voltage characteristics. Many edge termination techniques have been proposed, and the most appropriate technique for SiC device is Junction Termination Extension(JTE). In this paper, the change of breakdown voltage efficiency ratio according to the change of doping concentration and passivation oxide charge of each JTE techniques is demonstrated. As a result, the maximum breakdown voltage ratio of Single Zone JTE(SZ-JTE), Double Zone JTE(DZ-JTE), Multiple Floating Zone JTE(MFZ-JTE), and Space Modulated JTE(SM-JTE) is 98.24%, 99.02%, 98.98%, 99.22% each. MFZ-JTE has the smallest and SZ-JTE has the largest sensitivity of breakdown voltage ratios according to the change of JTE doping concentration. Additionally the degradation of breakdown voltage due to the passivation oxide charge is analyzed, and the sensitivity is largest in SZ-JTE and smallest in MFZ-JTE, too. In this paper, DZ-JTE and SM-JTE is the best efficiency JTE techniques than MFZ-JTE which needs large doping concentration in short JTE width.

  • Amorphous silicon films of large area have been crystallized by a line shape excimer laser beam of one dimensional scanning with a gaussian profile in the scanning direction. In order to characterize the crystalline phase transition of thickness variables in excimer laser annealing(ELA), angle wrapping method was used. And also to characterize the residual stresses of crystalline phase transition in the case of angle wrapped-crystalline silicon on corning 7059 glass, polarized raman spectroscopies were measured at various laser energy density and substrate temperature. The residual stress varies from $9.0{\times}10^9$ to $9.9{\times}10^9$, and from $9.9{\times}10^9$ to $1.2{\times}10^10$dyne/${cm}^2$ of the substrate temperature at room temperature and varies from $8.1{\times}10^9$ to $9.0{\times}10^9$, and from $9.0{\times}10^9$ to $9.9{\times}10^9$dyne/${cm}^2$ of the substrate temperature at $400^{\circ}C$ as a function of direction from surface to substrate. According to the direction from the surface in liquid phase to the interface and from the interface to near the substrate in solid phase of recrystallized Si thin film, respectively. Thus, the stress is increased from(Liquid phase to solid phase) with phase transition.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important public health problem throughout the world. Many important questions remain to be addressed in assessing exposure to these compounds. Because they are ubiquitous and highly volatile, special techniques must be applied in the analytical determination of VOCs. Personal exposure measurements are needed to evaluate the relationship between microenvironmental concentrations and actual exposures. It is also important to investigate exposure frequency, duration, and intensity, as well as personal exposure characteristics. In addition to air monitoring, biological monitoring may contribute significantly to risk assessment by allowing estimation of absorbed doses, rather than just the external exposure concentrations, which are evaluated by environmental and personal monitoring. This study was conducted to establish the analytic procedure of VOCs in air, blood, urine and exhaled breath and to evaluate the relationships among these environmental media. The subjects of this study were selected because they are occupationally exposed to high levels of VOCs. Environmental, personal, blood, urine and exhalation samples were collected. Purge & trap, thermal desorber, gas chromatography and mass selective detector were used to analyze the collected samples. Analytical procedures were validated with the“break through test”, 'quot;recovery test for storage and transportation”,“method detection limit test”and“inter-laboratory QA/QC study”. Assessment of halogenated compounds indicted that they were significantly correlated to each other (p value < 0.01). In a similar manner, aromatic compounds were also correlated, except in urine sample. Linear regression was used to evaluate the relationships between personal exposures and environmental concentrations. These relationships for aromatic and halogenated are as follows: Halogen $s_{personal}$ = 3.875+0.068Halogen $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .930) Aromatic $s_{personal}$ = 34217.757-31.266Aromatic $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .821) Multiple regression was used to evaluate the relationship between exposures and various exposure deter-minants including, gender, duration of employment, and smoking history. The results of the regression model-ins for halogens in blood and aromatics in urine are as follows: Halogen $s_{blood}$ = 8.181+0.246Halogen $s_{personal}$+3.975Gender ($R^2$= .925), Aromatic $s_{urine}$ = 249.565+0.135Aromatic $s_{personal}$ -5.651 D.S ($R^2$ = .735), In conclusion, we have established analytic procedures for VOC measurement in biological and environmental samples and have presented data demonstrating relationships between VOCs levels in biological media and environmental samples. • As a potential clean energy resource, the production and consumption of hydrogen gas are expected to gradually increase, so that hydrogen related studies are also increasing. The thermal and chemical properties of hydrogen result in its high flammability; in particular, there is a high risk if leaks occur within an enclosed space. In this study, we applied the computational fluid dynamics method to conduct a numerical study on the leakage behavior of hydrogen gas and compared these numerical study results with an experimental study. The leakage hole diameter was selected as an important parameter and the hydrogen gas dispersion behavior in an enclosed space was investigated through various analytical methods. Moreover, the flammable regions were investigated as a function of the leakage time and leakage hole size. We found that the growth rate of the flammable region increases rapidly with increasing leakage hole size. We also investigated the relation between the mass flow rate and the critical time when the hydrogen gas reaches the ceiling. The analysis of the monitoring points showed that the hydrogen gas dispersion behavior is isotropic and independent of the geometry. We found that the concentration of gas in an enclosed space is affected by both the leakage flow rate and amount of gas accumulated in the enclosure.
