  • Using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis, the thermal distortion of the ventilated disk brakes has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during 15 braking operations. The FEM results show that the bendings and distortions of the disk toward the left side are decreased, but the sinusoidal distortion of the disk rubbing surface along the arc length of the vent hole is highly increased by increasing the convective air cooling effects, which is heavily related to the squeal, wear and micro-thermal crackings at the rubbing surfaces due to uneven dissipation rates of friction heatings.

  • High Pressure Micro Jet (HPMJ) pad conditioning system was investigated as an alternative to diamond disc conditioning in copper CMP. A series of comparative 50-wafer marathon runs were conducted at constant wafer pressure and sliding velocity using Rohm & Haas IC1000 and Asahi-Kasei EMD Corporation (UNIPAD) concentrically grooved pads under ex-situ diamond conditioning or HPMJ conditioning. SEM images indicated that fibrous surface was restored using UNIPAD pads under both diamond and HPMJ conditioning. With IC1000 pads, asperities on the surface were significantly collapsed. This was believed to be due to differences in pad wear rates for the two conditioning methods. COF and removal rate were stable from wafer to wafer using both diamond and HPMJ conditioning when UNIPAD pads were used. Also, HPMJ conditioning showed higher COF and removal rate when compared to diamond conditioning for UNIPAD. On the other hand, COF and removal rates for IC1000 pads decreased significantly under HPMJ conditioning. Regardless of pad conditioning method adopted and the type of pad used, linear correlation was observed between temperature and COF, and removal rate and COF.

  • This paper presents a rotordynamic analysis and the operation of a power turbine applied to a 250 kW super-critical $CO_2$ cycle. The power turbine consists of a turbine wheel and a shaft supported by two fluid film bearings. We use a tilting pad bearing for the power turbine owing to the high speed operation, and employ copper backing pads to improve the thermal management of the bearing. We conduct a rotordynamic analysis based on the design parameters of the power turbine. The dynamic coefficients of the tilting pad bearings were calculated based on the iso-thermal lubrication theory and turbine wheel was modeled as equivalent inertia. The predicted Cambell diagram showed that there are two critical speeds, namely the conical and bending critical speeds under the rated speed. However, the unbalance response prediction showed that vibration levels are controlled within 10 mm for all speed ranges owing to the high damping ratio of the modes. Additionally, the predicted logarithmic decrement indicates that there is no unstable mode. The power turbine uses compressed air at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ in its operation, and we monitor the shaft vibration and temperature of the lubricant during the test. In the steady state, we record a temperature rise of $40^{\circ}C$ between the inlet and outlet lubricant and the measured shaft vibration shows good agreement with the prediction.

  • We invested effect of the keeping-time of uncured composite and thermal aging, of cured composite on adhesive strength for rubber-brass coated steel cord composite in this study. We also evaluated how the adhesive strength affects to tire endurance. Using PAD adhesion specimen, peel adhesive strength was measured. The uncured composite was kept for several days up to 35 days in factory. Cured composite was also kept for 5 and 10 days at $85^{\circ}C$ in dry oven. Peel adhesive strength was decreased with increasing keeping-time and showed lower value with increasing thermal aging time. The lower peel adhesive strength, the lower tire-endurance. This fact was caused by the humidity and thermal aging which affected in the decrease of adhesive strength of the rubber-steel cord composite and resulted in interface fracture between rubber and steel cord. This phenomenon was confirmed from SEM investigation and tire-endurance. It was just known that corrosion of steel cord's surface and aging of adhesive layer strongly affected to decrease of adhesive strength. This resulted in directly decreasing tire-endurance.

  • The brake disc materials for railway vehicle have been mainly used cast-iron. The brake disc and pad should be light, resist to a thermal crack and absorb enough friction energy. In order to satisfy this requirement, aluminum alloy brake disc for railway vehicle has been newly developed. The aluminum itself has not been considered the friction material for railway vehicle. However, in the case of aluminum composite with dispersed ceramic particles, friction characteristics, resistance to wear and heat are much improved. In the present study, aluminum composite brake disc of 20% ceramic particle and three kinds of organic pads have been tested in dynamometer. The results show that Al MMC brake disc and pad have good friction coefficient and wear rate, and thermal cracks in brake disc have not been initiated. Also, the Al MMC brake disc can be applied to railway vehicle of 150 km/h.

  • The brake system is important part of automobile safety system. The disc brake system is divided two parts: the rotating axisymmetrical disc and the stationary pads. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energy of moving vehicle were converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. The frictional heat, which is generated on the interface of the disc and pads, can cause high temperature during the braking process. The object of present work is to determine temperature and thermal stress, to compare to simulation results and experimental results in the disc by partial 3D model of ventilated disc brake with appropriate boundary conditions. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads were applied to the thermo-mechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.

  • Hot spot phenomenon that occurs, during judder vibration, is locally concentrated heat due to friction between brake disk and pad. It is important to understand the reason behind hot spot phenomenon, for reduction of judder vibration. In this experimental study, experiments were performed in accordance with rotation speed of brake disk, pressure of master cylinder and pad length for achieving different aspects of hot spot phenomenon. Temperature distribution of hot spot was obtained by using the infrared camera. As the hot spot occurred, vibration was measured and frequency analysis was performed. Finite element analysis of thermal deformation of disk was performed by using temperature distribution that was achieved by experimental results. And mode shapes of disk was analyzed by finite element analysis and compared with experimental results. It was observed that the excitation frequency band of frictional contact and frictional force mainly affects the hot spot phenomenon.

  • When the brakes of a vehicle are applied, large amounts of heat are generated on the surfaces of the brake discs owing to friction between the discs and the brake pads. A high temperature gradient on the disc surfaces leads to thermal deformation and severe disc abrasion. Ultimately, the thermal deformation and disc wear give rise to a thermal judder phenomenon, which has a major effect on the stability of the vehicle. To investigate and propose a solution to these problems, thermoelastic instabilities under applied thermal and mechanical loads were analyzed using the commercial finite element package ANSYS by considering the contact surfaces between the discs and pads. Direct-contact three-dimensional finite elements between the discs and pads were applied to investigate the disc friction temperature, thermal deformation, and contact stress so that the thermal judder phenomenon on the surface of the disc could be predicted.

  • A brake disk and a pad are important parts that affect the braking stability of a railway vehicle. Especially, because a brake disk stops the vehicle using conversion of the kinetic energy to frictional energy, thermal fatigue cracks are generated by the cyclic thermal load, as frictional heat, on a frictional surface and these cracks cause the fracture of a brake disk. Therefore, many researches for the thermal stress must be performed to improve the efficiency of brake disk and ensure the braking stability. In this study, we performed the thermal stress analysis for a ventilated brake disk with 3-D analysis model. For that, we simplified the shape of a ventilated hole to minimize problems that could be occurred in analysis process. Thermal stress analysis was performed in case that pressure distributions on a frictional surface is constant and is not. To determine pressure distributions of irregular case, pressure distribution analysis for a frictional surface was carried out. Finally using the results that were obtained through pressure distribution analysis, we carried out thermal stress analysis of each case and investigated the results of thermal stress analysis.

  • Thermal environment of greenhouse was investigated by thermo-tracer in this study. The Thermo-tracer is a high-sensitivity infrared thermometer of non-contact type. The infrared energy emitted from the measured object is converted into an electrical signal by the detector(HgCdTe) and display as a color or black & white thermal image by way of optical scanning, The experiment was conducted for Venlo-type greenhouse with pad & fan system. The temperature difference between measured by Thermo-trace and measured by HOBO sensor is maximum 0.8$^{\circ}C$. Thermo-trace is possible to use for the thermal environment analysis and diagnosis of a cooling and heating system of greenhouse.
