  • Hyporheic zone is a region beneath and alongside a stream, river, or lake bed, where there is mixing of shallow groundwater and surfacewater. Hyporheic exchange controls a variety of physical, biogeochemical and thermal processes, and provides unique ecotones in a aquatic ecosystem. Field and experimental observations, and modeling studies indicate that hyporheic exchange is mainly in response to pressure gradients driven by the geomorphological features of stream beds. In the reach scale of a stream, pool-riffle structures dominate the exchange patterns. Flow over a pool-riffle sequence develops recirculation zones and stagnation points, and this flow structures make irregular pressure gradient which is driving force of the hyporheic exchange. In this study, 3 D hydro-dynamic model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the surface water and Darcy's Law and the continuity equation for ground water. The two sets of equations are coupled via the pressure distribution along the interface. Simulation results show that recirculation zones and stagnation points in the pool-riffle structures dominantly control the upwelling and downwelling patterns. With decrease of recirculation zones, length of donwelling zone formed in front of riffles is reduced and position of maximum downwelling point moves downward. The numerical simulation could successfully predict the behavior of hyporheic exchange and contribute the field study, river management and restoration.

  • Climate analysis is important in urban planning for human comfort. Synoptic weather conditions can only resolve the 30% of local variance of wind conditions whereas 70% of the variance arise from local terrain, buildings, and other small scale thermal conditions. Climate Analysis Seoul (CAS) was developed to resolve such micro-scale climate. The Local-scale air temperature Deviation (LD) analysis map from CAS showed the co-existence of built-up and suburban areas in the study region (CR, Cold-air analysis Region) despite its small extent. Temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction were monitored in CR. Hourly observed cooling rate agreed well with LD. Cold air production, transportation, and stagnation was visualized by the observed Vertical Temperature Gradient (VTG) along the small stream in CR. VTG observed at the upper-most stream can be divided into two components: radiative cooling and cold air inflow from outside. Radiative cooling exists regardless of the wind speed whereas cold air inflow occurs only with calm wind. From the regression analyses based on the wind speed, the inflow portion was determined as 84% of radiative cooling. Climate analysis in the future will be able to characterize the changes in cold air by urban development plan to support the human comfort.

  • Silicon carbide is one of the most attractive and promising wide band-gap semiconductor material with excellent physical properties and huge potential for electronic applications. Up to now, the most successful method for growth of large SiC crystals with high quality is the physical vapor transport (PVT) method [1, 2]. Since further reduction of defect densities in larger crystal are needed for the true implementation of SiC devices, many researchers are focusing to improve the quality of SiC single crystal through the process modifications for SiC bulk growth or new material implementations [3, 4]. It is well known that for getting high quality SiC crystal, source materials with high purity must be used in PVT method. Among various source materials in PVT method, a SiC powder is considered to take an important role because it would influence on crystal quality of SiC crystal as well as optimum temperature of single crystal growth, the growth rate and doping characteristics. In reality, the effect of powder on SiC crystal could definitely exhibit the complicated correlation. Therefore, the present research was focused to investigate the quality difference of SiC crystal grown by conventional PVT method with using various SiC powders. As shown in Fig. 1, we used three SiC powders with different particles size. The 6H-SiC crystals were grown by conventional PVT process and the SiC seeds and the high purity SiC source materials are placed on opposite side in a sealed graphite crucible which is surrounded by graphite insulation[5, 6]. The bulk SiC crystal was grown at $2300^{\circ}C$ of the growth temperature and 50mbar of an argon pressure. The axial thermal gradient across the SiC crystal during the growth is estimated in the range of $15\sim20^{\circ}C/cm$. The chemical etch in molten KOH maintained at $450^{\circ}C$ for 10 min was used for defect observation with a polarizing microscope in Nomarski mode. Electrical properties of bulk SiC materials were measured by Hall effect using van der Pauw geometry and a UV/VIS spectrophotometer. Fig. 2 shows optical photographs of SiC crystal ingot grown by PVT method and Table 1 shows electrical properties of SiC crystals. The electrical properties as well as crystal quality of SiC crystals were systematically investigated.

  • The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), driven by high density water sinking around Greenland serves as a global climate regulator, because it transports heat and materials in the climate system. We analyzed the mechanism of AMOC on a decadal time scale simulated with the HadGEM2-AO model. The lead-lag regression analysis with AMOC index shows that the decadal variability of the thermohaline circulation in the Atlantic Ocean can be considered as a self-sustained variability. This means that the long-term change of AMOC is related to the instability which is originated from the phase difference between the meridional temperature gradient and the ocean circulation. When the overturning circulation becomes stronger, the heat moves northward and decreases the horizontal temperature-dominated density gradients. Subsequently, this leads to weakening of the circulation, which in turn generates the anomalous cooling at high latitudes and, thereby strengthening the AMOC. In this mechanism, the density anomalies at high latitudes are controlled by the thermal advection from low latitudes, meaning that the variation of the AMOC is thermally driven and not salinity driven.

  • Particle-reinforced metal matrix composites exhibit a strengthening effect due to the particle size-dependent length scale that arises from the strain gradient, and thus from the geometrically necessary dislocations between the particles and matrix that result from their CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and elastic-plastic mismatches. In this study, the influence of the size-dependent length scale on the particle-matrix interface failure and ductile failure in the matrix was examined using finite-element punch zone modeling whereby an augmented strength was assigned around the particle. The failure behavior was observed by a parametric study, while varying the interface failure properties such as the interface strength and debonding energy with different particle sizes and volume fractions. It is shown that the two failure modes (interface failure and ductile failure in the matrix) interact with each other and are closely related to the particle size-dependent length scale; in other words, the composite with the smaller particles, which is surrounded by a denser dislocation than that with the larger particles, retards the initiation and growth of the interface and matrix failures, and also leads to a smaller amount of decrease in the flow stress during failure.

  • The geochemistry of the $CO_2$-rich waters ($Pco_2\leq$about 1 atm) in NE part of the Kangwon province was investigated. The $CO_2$-rich waters can be divided to three types based on chemical compositions: Na-$HCO_3$, Ca-Na-$HCO_3$and Ca-$HCO_3$types. The water chemistry indicates that these type waters were evolved through reaction with host rocks by supply of deep-seated $CO_2$during deep circulation, and their geochemical environments in depth might have been different each other. The dissolution process of plagioclase is important in water/granite interactions and its solubility change according to reaction temperature played an important role in the determination of chemical compositions. The higher reaction temperature coincides with the lower different in solubility between albite and anorthite. It means that calcium is mainly released to the water in the lower temperature, whereas sodium in the higher temperature due to high Na/Ca ratio in plagioclase. The application of various chemical geothermometries on the $CO_2$-rich waters shows that the calculated reservoir temperature of Na-$HCO_3$type (about 15$0^{\circ}C$) is higher than those of Ca-$HCO_3$type. Therefore, we now interpret the recognized chemical difference was mainly due to the difference of reaction temperature. Considering normal thermal gradient, we can understand that the Na-$HCO_3$type was evolved from deeper crustal depth than the Ca-$HCO_3$type.

  • An engineering scale test, which is called KENTEX, was carried out to understand and to analyze the coupled thermal, hydrological and mechanical phenomena in the engineered barrier system(EBS) of Korean reference disposal system. Using the experimental data obtained from KENTEX, the water saturation processes in bentonite could be analyzed. From the comparison between the model calculation using ABAQUS and the experimental results, the difference of the water content between them in the unsaturating part was large because the drying phenomena due to moisture redistribution by the temperature gradient could not be included in the model. In the saturating part, the difference of the water content between them was decreased gradually and showed to be small in the full saturation. And the time of about 95% saturation could be estimated about 500 days from the model calculation and experimental results. Also it could be known that the moisture redistribution in the unsaturated part could not be affected on the saturation time of bentonite in the repository. Therefore, it is considered that this model could be used to quantitatively predict the water saturation time in bentonite as EBS for the disposal system.

  • Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women around the world, and mortality is primarily caused by micro-metastatic disease. The complex mechanisms of breast cancer invasion and metastasis are intrinsically related to the malignant cell type so that early detection of micro-metastases can help prolongation of survival for patient. The aim of the present research work was evaluation of the expression status of mammoglobin protein as a candidate molecular marker in the negative sentinel lymph node (SLN). Fifty tumor specimens, and 50 normal adjacent breast tissue samples from the same patients were selected on the basis of having more than 10% tumor content for RNA extraction from SLNs. Tumor samples and normal adjacent breast tissue were archived in the form of frozen fresh tissue in liquid nitrogen. Real-time PCR was performed on a Bioner life express gradient thermal cycler system. Mammoglobin gene overexpression in breast cancer metastasis was investigated. Single marker results were mammaglobin 66.7% and CK19 50.0%, with 58.3% for the two in combination. Due to improved outcome with at least 3 genes (83.3%), it seems, triple marker evaluation will be most likely useful for detecting micro-metastases instead of studying separate genes.

  • Fingerprint segmentation and ridge orientation estimation algorithms with images from a mobile camera are proposed. The fingerprint images from a mobile camera are quite different from those from conventional sensor, called touch based sensor such as optical, capacitive, and thermal. For example, the images from a mobile camera are colored and the backgrounds or non-finger regions are very erratic depending on how the image capture time and place. Also the contrast between ridge and valley of a mobile camera image are lower than that of touch based sensor image. To segment fingerprint region, we first detect the initial region using color information and texture information. The LUT (Look Up Table) is used to model the color distribution of fingerprint images using manually segmented images and frequency information is extracted to discriminate between in focused fingerprint regions and out of focused background regions. With the detected initial region, the region growing algerian is executed to segment final fingerprint region. In fingerprint orientation estimation, the problem of gradient based method is very sensitive to outlier that occurred by scar and camera noise. To solve this problem, we propose a robust regression method that removes the outlier iteratively and effectively. In the experiments, we evaluated the result of the proposed fingerprint segmentation algerian using 600 manually segmented images and compared the orientation algorithms in terms of recognition accuracy.
