The effects of thermo-solutal convection on mercurous chloride system of ${Hg_2}{Cl_2}$, and Ne during physical vapor transport are numerically investigated for further understanding and insight into essence of transport phenomena, For $10\;K{\le}{\Delta}T{\le}30\;K$, the growth rate slowly increases and, then is decreased gradually until ${\Delta}T$=50 K, The occurrence of this critical point near at ${\Delta}T$=30 K is likely to be due to the effects of thermo-physical properties stronger than the temperature gradient corresponding to driving force for thermal convection. For the range of $10\;Torr{\le}P_B{\le}300\;Torr$, the rate is second order-exponentially decayed with partial pressures of component B, $P_B$. For the range of $5{\le}M_B{\le}200$, the rate is second order-exponentially decayed with a function of molecular weight of component B, $M_B$. Like the case of a partial pressure of component B, the effects of a molecular weight arc: reflected through the binary diffusivity coefficients, which are intimately related with suppressing the convection flow inside the growth enclosure, i,e., transition from convection to diffusion-dominant flow mode as the molecular weight of B increases. The convective mode is near at a ground level, i,e., on earth (1 $g_0$), and the convection is switched to the diffusion mode for $0.1\;g_0{\le}g{\le}10^{-2}g_0$, whereas the diffusion region ranges from $10^{-2}g_0$ up to $10^{-5}g_0$.
In order to investigate the rates and factors of slow mass movement on a subalpine slope of Mount Halla, two painted stone lines were monitored in a bare patch at 1,710 m a.s.l. The mean movement of surface gravels is 58.2 cm, equivalent to 0.24 cm/day. However, the rates of movement vary with seasons. Compared with 0.05 cm/day of a non-frozen season, a frozen season shows 0.3 cm/day. It implies that the movement of surface gravels could be largely controlled by periglacial processes during a frozen season. In particular, frost creep including needle ice creep plays a main role in the movement of gravels under the thermal and soil conditions which are favorable for needle ice development. Since line II is located at a steeper slope than line I, the movement of line II was always larger than that of line I. However, slope gradient is not the most dominant factor contributing the movement of gravels, which can be interrupted by downslope big gravels and vegetation patches. The size and specific weight of gravels also can influence the movement of gravels. Porous and light scoriae result in relatively quick movement of gravels on the subalpine slope of Mount Halla.
In order to clarify the influence of environmental factors on the phytoplankton cmmunity in Kyeonggi Bay, the hydrological and water quality data were obtained from 20cruises from May, 1981, to September, 1982 in this bay. Physical conditions at the mouth of the bay are more stable than those at the head of the bay. Temperatures and salinities of the upper part of the bay show great seasonal fluctuations due to the river discharge. By the extending effects of freshwater, a weak two-layer flow system is formed from the upper part of the bay to Palmi Island. In summer thermal stratification are formed in the middle and outer parts of the bay. In winter, However, the temperature shows no vertical temperature gradient. The inner bay and the vicinity area of Incheon Harbour are relatively polluted and eutrophicated due to both the runoff of freshwater from the Han River and the waste discharge from Incheon industrial complex. However, except the polluted area, the study areas are well oxygenated with more than 90% saturation.
The distribution of impurity included in benzene layer crystal was explored in layer crystallization of cyclohexane and benzene mixtures. The influence of crystal growth rate on crystal purity was investigated. All experimental results for bezene-cyclohexane system obtained in layer crystallizer have been evaluated with the criterion of Wintermantel. The purity of crystal decreases with increasing degree of subcooling, decreasing feed concentration and increasing crystal growth rate. The crystal growth rate was a key parameter to determine the inclusion of impurity in crystals. The results obtained from runs performed at increasing crystallization time(i.e. crystal thickness) have clearly shown that migration of inclusions within crystal layer to the melt, leading to the removal of impurity occurs. The diffusion of impurity which takes place during the crystallization from the beginning, enhances a further purification of the crystal layer if that underwent a thermal gradient after growth of the layer crystal stops.

While effects of the atmospheric boundary layer flow on engineering infrastructure are more or less known, some local transient winds create difficulties for structures, traffic and human activities. Hence, further research is required to fully elucidate flow characteristics of some of those very unique local winds. In this study, important characteristics of observed vertical velocity profiles along the main wind direction for the gusty Bora wind blowing along the eastern Adriatic coast are presented. Commonly used empirical power-law and the logarithmic-law profiles are compared against unique 3-level high-frequency Bora measurements. The experimental data agree well with the power-law and logarithmic-law approximations. An interesting feature observed is a decrease in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and an increase in friction velocity with increasing Bora wind velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities, which is due to a stronger increase in absolute velocity at each of the heights observed as compared to the respective velocity gradient (difference in average velocity among two different heights). The trends observed are similar during both the day and night. The thermal stratification is near neutral due to a strong mechanical mixing. The differences in aerodynamic surface roughness length are negligible for different time averaging periods when using the median. For the friction velocity, the arithmetic mean proved to be independent of the time record length, while for the power-law exponent both the arithmetic mean and the median are not influenced by the time averaging period. Another issue is a large difference in aerodynamic surface roughness length when calculating using the arithmetic mean and the median. This indicates that the more robust median is a more suitable parameter to determine the aerodynamic surface roughness length than the arithmetic mean value. Variations in velocity profiles at the same site during different wind periods are interesting because, in the engineering community, it has been commonly accepted that the aerodynamic characteristics at a particular site remain the same during various wind regimes.
The internal residual stresses within the multilayered structure with sharp interface induced by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the materials of adjacent layers often provide the source of failure such as delamination of interfaces etc. Recent development of the multilayered structure with functionally graded interface would be the solution to prevent this kind of failure. However a systematic thermo-mechanical analysis is needed for the customized structural design of multilayered structure. In this study, theoretical model for the thermo-mechanical analysis is developed for multilayered structures of the $Al-SiC_p$ functionally graded composite for electronic packaging. The evolution of curvature and internal stresses in response to temperature variations is presented for the different combinations of geometry. The resultant analytical solutions are used for the optimal design of the multilayered structures with functionally graded interface as well as with sharp interface.

The Ni-base superalloy CM247LC was directionally solidified (DS) using the Bridgman-type furnace to understand the effect of the chill plate on the microstructural evolution, such as dendrite arm spacing, microporosity, and MC-type carbide. The DS process was also modeled by the PROCAST to predict the solidification rate, thermal gradient, and resultant cooling rate in the entire length of the DS specimen. Due to the quenching effects of chill plate, four distinct areas were found to form in the specimen, in which the solidification rate was changed, during DS at a given withdrawal rate of 0.083 mm/s. Among the microstructural features investigated, the dendrite arm spacings and average size of the MC-type carbide near the chill plate were found to be influenced by the quenching effect of the chill plate. However, no significant influence was found on the size and volume fraction of microporosity, and the volume fraction of the MC-type carbide. The relationship between the microstructural features and the solidification variables was also analyzed and discussed on the basis of a combination of experimental and modeling results.

The EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubbers used for manufacturing engine radiator hoses can be degraded by locally generated electrical stress in addition to thermal and mechanical stresses. This study presents an accelerated life prediction of the EPDM rubber under electrochemical stresses using the Arrhenius formula under various aging temperatures($60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$). The modified life prediction formula considers the relationship between the gradient($E_a/R$) and the Arrhenius constant(C). The effects of tensile strain(5%, 10%) on the life of these rubbers were investigated. The aging temperature influences EPDM rubber life, and tensile strain was predicted. It was confirmed that the modified life prediction was within the data deviation level of the test.
The Inseong gold-silver mine is located 3Km northwest of Suanbo, Choongcheongbugdo, Republic of Korea. The mine occurs in the shear zone formed by tension fractures within the Hwanggangri Formation of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt. Ore minerals found in the gold-silver bearing hydrothermal quartz vein composed mainly of pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor amount of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, stannite, bismuthininte, native bismuth, chalcocite, electrum and tellurian canfieldite(?). The gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, chlorite and rhodochrocite. Wallrock alterations such as chloritization, silicitication, pyritization, carbonitization and sericitization can be observed in or around the quartz vein. According to the paragenetic sequence, quartz vein structure and mineral assemnlages, three different stages of ore formation can be recognized. The physico-chemical environment of ore formation in this deposit shows slight variation from stage to stage, but the condition of main ore deposition can be summarized as follows. Fluid inclusion, S-istope geothermometry and geothermometry based on mineral chemistry by use of arsenopyrite and chlorite show the ore was formed at temperature between 399 and $210^{\circ}C$ from fluids with salinities of 3.3-5.8 wt.% equivalent NaCl. It indicates that pressure during the mineralization is less than 0.6 Kb corresponding to a depth not greater than 1Km. S-isotope data suggests that thermal fluid may have magmatic origin wit some degree of mixing with meteoric water. In coclusion, the Inseong gold-silver deposit was formed at shallow depth and relatively high-temperature possibly with steep geothermal gradient under xenothermal condition.
The development mechanisms of an unusual heavy snowfall event, which occurred in the coast of Jeju Island on 23 January 2016 were investigated through a thermodynamic approach. The formation of heavy snowfall was attributed to the enhanced thermal convection in two ways. First, the convection was enhanced by the air-sea temperature difference between the cold air advection in low-troposphere associated with the strengthening of the Siberian High and abnormal warm sea surface temperature, which is $1{\sim}2^{\circ}C$ higher than normal year over the Yellow Sea (YS). Second, the convective instability was increased by the vertical temperature gradient between the 7 days-sustained cold air advection in low-troposphere and the abrupt cold air intrusion in mid-troposphere induced by the southward shift of a cold cut-off vortex ($-45^{\circ}C$) at the formation stage. Compared to the twelve hours prior to the formation, the low-level moisture increased by 5% through the moisture supply from the YS, and the air-sea temperature difference increased from $18.5^{\circ}C$ to $28.5^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the upward sensible (latent) heat flux increased 1.5 (1.2) times over the YS before the twelve hours prior to the formation. Thereafter, the sustained moisture supply and upward turbulent heat flux helped to maintain the snowstorm.
