With increasing demand for LNG as energy resources and need for $CO_2$ sequestration as greenhouse gas, more storage facilities are required in Korea. Due to the recent acute safety concerns and land shortage, storage facilities tend to be located underground. In design and construction of underground storage for low and high temperature materials, besides their mechanical characteristics, the thermal characteristics of rock under temperature variation should be understood. In this study, laboratory experiments for the measurement of the thermal expansion coefficient of rock were performed using strain gauge in consideration of the particle size of mineral and experiment temperature range. Experiment results show that thermal expansion coefficient decreased as the temperature decreases. In addition, linear thermal expansion coefficient was developed for typical Korean rocks such as granite. The results of this study can be utilized for the evaluation of thermal propagation in rock mass and the thermo-mechanical stability of underground facilities.
Generally, Invar alloy shows very low thermal expansion characteristics, lower than $2{\times}10^{-6}$/K approximately. To apply Fe-Ni-Co-C Invar alloy as a core material for large ampacity transmission line we studied the effects of magnetic properties on coefficient of thermal expansion. The coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) suddenly decreases with addition of a little carbon(0.08%), increases with the increasing carbon and has a constant value at the composition over than 1.0%C. The trend of Curie temperature change with carbon is similar with that of CTE. Therefore, the CTE has a linear relationship with Curie temperature. However, the CTE linearly decreases with the ratio of saturation magnetization and Curie temperature(${\sigma}_s/T_c$).

The thermal expansion coefficient, which causes the micro failure at the interfacial state of thin films is necessary to consider for proper designing MEMS. The effect of temperature on the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of $SiO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$ film was investigated. Thermal strain induced by mismatch of CTE between substrate and thin film continuously measured with resolution-improved electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI). The thermal stress induced by mismatch of CTE derivate through thermal strain. The thermal expansion coefficients of thin film were calculated with the general equation of CTE and thermal stress in thin films, and it confirmed that CTE of $SiO_2$changed from $0.25{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ to $1.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ with temperature increasing from 50 to $600^{\circ}C$

A geological repository system consists of a disposal canister with packed spent fuel, buffer material, backfill material, and intact rock. The buffer is indispensable to assure the disposal safety of high-level radioactive waste. Since the heat generated from spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister is released to the surrounding buffer materials, the thermal properties of the buffer material are very important in determining the entire disposal safety. Especially, since thermal expansion can cause thermal stress to the intact rock mass in the near-field, it is very important to evaluate thermal expansion characteristics of bentonite buffer materials. Therefore, this paper presents a thermal expansion coefficient prediction model of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials which is a Ca-bentonite produced in South Korea. The linear thermal expansion coefficient was measured considering heating rate, dry density and temperature variation using dilatometer equipment. Thermal expansion coefficient values of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials were $4.0{\sim}6.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$. Based on the experimental results, a non-linear regression model to predict the thermal expansion coefficient was suggested and fitted according to the dry density.
The thermal expansion, thermal stability, mechanical strength and infrared radiative property of Al2TiO5-clay composites, prepared from synthesized Al2TiO5 and clay, were investigated to develop a material for far infrared radiators. The emittance of composites containing 10~50 wt% clay, heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, increased with increasing clay content and emittance was about 0.3 and 0.92 in the ranges of 3,400~2,500 cm-1 and 2,500~400cm-1, respectively. The bulk density and bending strength of the Al2TiO5-clay composites increased with increasing clay content. 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite, heat-treated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$, had an adequate strength for infrared radiators; 80 MPa. The degree of thermal expansion hysteresis decreased with increasing clay content and the mean thermal expansion coefficient increased with increasing clay content. The thermal expansion coefficient of 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ was 5.78$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$.
Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficients of cordierite ceramics reinforced by SiC whiskers up to 40 vol. % were investigated. The composite specimens were hot pressed at 1523K for 30 min under 28.5 MPa pressing pressure in Ar atmosphere. Thermal expansions of the hot pressed composites were measured using a differential dilatometer up to 1262 K in air. Thermal expansions and thermal expansion coefficient of the composites increased with SiC whisker content. Thermal expansion behaviors of the composites were well explained by modelling parallel slabs randomly distributed on the whisker plane as the microstructural element of the composites.
Latex modification of concrete provides the material with higher flexural strength, as well as high bond strength and reduced water permeability. However, If the thermal expansion properties of overlay concrete (latex-modified concretes) are big different from that of substrate (ordinary portland cement concrete), these would cause a big interfacial stresses and result in premature failure. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to investigate thermal expansion characteristics of latex-modified concrete with cement types. The result of thermal expansion showed the coefficient of thermal expansion of concretes increased with latex inclusion. The coefficient of thermal expansion of RSLMC was a little smaller than that of LMC, which might be due to the finer cement grain, compacter internal, and stiffer properties of concrete. However, the coefficients of LMC and RSLMC were quite similar to that of ordinary cement concrete. Thus, this would not cause an interfacial stresses and will enable to ensure long-term performance of concrete bridge deck overlays.
In this article, a four-variable refined plate theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates subjected to uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Young's modulus and Poisson ratio of the FGM plates are assumed to remain constant throughout the entire plate. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the FGM plate varies according to a power law form through the thickness coordinate. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The influences of many plate parameters on buckling temperature difference such ratio of thermal expansion, aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and gradient index will be investigated.

Autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete is affected high temperature history. So to evaluate autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete accurately, thermal expansion in it should be removed. In this study, compensated autogenous shrinkage was calculated after gathering thermal expansion coefficient at early age experimentally. As a result of the study. Autogenous shrinkage of mass specimen (300 ${\times}$ 300 ${\times}$ 300mm) was remarkably higher than it of standard specimen (100 ${\times}$ 100 ${\times}$ 400mm). So it was found that compensation on thermal expansion should in evaluating autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete. And this study shows results on opc and similar own contraction, if used retarder.
Due to the anisotropy of thermal expansion, LAS system which has low thermal expansion property is hard to obtain a dense sintered body. Therefore, the thermal expansion coefficient and the mechanical strength were decreased. In this study, mullite, which has good mechanical properties in high temperature and comparatively low thmeral expansion coefficient, was taken as a additive in LAS system. And then, sintering, thermal, and mechanical properties were investigated. The results are follows; When mullite is added in eucryptite composition (Li2O.Al2O3.2SiO2) of LAS system, the creation of liquid phase results in the densification of sintered body and the specimen sintered at 136$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours shows optimum sintering condition. With the addition of mullite in eucryptite composition, mechanical strength is increased by the control of grain growth. Especially, flexual strength of EM0 specimen was about double value than the basic composition. Thermal expansion coefficients of EM0 and EM15 specimens sintered at 136$0^{\circ}C$ were -8.23$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ and -4.90$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of RT.~80$0^{\circ}C$. As the mullite content are increased, negative thermal expansion ratios are decreased.
