  • The synthesis of polycrystalline $Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics with low thermal expansion by fusion in an electric arc furnance was investigated. The thermal expansion curves of $Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics were lowered because of microcracks caused by the strong thermal expansion anisotropy of the crystal axes and were accompanied by hysteresis curves. These phenomena are explained by the opening and closing of microcracks. The difference in microcracking temperatures of dilatometric cooling curves in the range of 400~$620^{\circ}C$ is caused by the difference in sintering temperature, grain size and stabilization status.

  • Thermal expansion property of $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ system consisted of Muan clay, Hadong Pink Kaolin and Dangjin Silica was studied. Specimens were heated at the constant rate of 18$0^{\circ}C$/hr to the max. temperatures of 115$0^{\circ}C$ to 130$0^{\circ}C$ with an interval of $25^{\circ}C$, and matured for 3hrs. The result of X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that main crystals formed were $\alpha$-quartz, $\alpha$-cristobalite and mullite. Linear thermal expansion was measured at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The results of the linear thermal expansion were decreased regularly with the increase of the sintering temperature in accordance with the following equation. $y=5$\chi$\perp1100^{\circ}$. Where $\chi$ is amounts of kaolin (wt%), and y is temperature of the changing point of linear thermal expansion.

  • Considering the effective distribution coefficient of Ni in Fe-Ni-Co invar alloy containing a little amount of carbon, we investigated on the thermal expansion coefficient(${\alpha}$). Fe-Ni-Co invar alloy had a large thermal expansion coefficient in as-casted compared with solution treated. The thermal expansion coefficient of Fe-Ni-Co alloy increased with the carbon content in both state of as-casted and solution treated. The effective distribution coefficient(Ke$\^$Ni/) of Ni was smaller than unity in alloy of not containing carbon, but is way larger than unity in alloy of containing carbon. It was considered that the homogeneity of Ni in primary austenite affected thermal expansion coefficient.

  • One of the important technical issues is how to decrease thermal expansion of ballscrew in proportion to the increase of machining speed. When measuring force of stretch of ballscrew, since not only actual expansion and the value of bending have to be considered, it's impossible to definite the exact value of expansion. In addition, support bearings of ballscrew gain considerable force in axial direction. It also generates thermal expansion on the ballscrew, and deteriorates the bearings. In conclusion, it's impossible to give the pretension enough to absorb the all elongation due to thermal expansion generated during machine running. If gave, bed, column and saddle are all bent to change machine accuracy, and the pretension of support bearing of ballscrew in machine tool.

  • The interrupting capability of gas circuit breakers(GCB) are critically dependent on the pressure rise of the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber at current zero. Therefore it's very useful for the designers to know the pressure rise there at the design stage. Much effort has been done to predict the pressure rise in the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber in no-load condition. Thus, we now calculate it with reasonable accuracy with the simple programs coded by ourselves or with the commercial CFD packages. However, it has been still difficult problem to calculate it under the existence of arc. In this paper, we propose a method which can be used to predict the pressure rise in the thermal expansion chamber of thermal expansion type GCB. The method has been applied to the 25.8kV 25kA thermal expansion type model GCB and the calculated results have been compared with those from experiment.

  • The safety valve is the important equipment used to protect the pressure vessel and pressure facilities from overpressure by discharging the operation medium when the pressure of system is reaching the design pressure of the system. Some materials for a safety valve disk are studied in this paper. A studied safety valve has to resist sulfurous acid and nitric acid. etc. Furthermore teflon which is a general material of the valve easily sticks to a disk and a sliding part of the valve by thermal expansion. Therefore both teflon and stainless-steel are used to improve these problems. The analysis of the thermal expansion is conducted with commercial FEM software to improve the problems. Boundary conditions were temperature and load in this study. From the analysis, the thermal expansion of by teflon/stainless steel-made valve is lower than that of teflon-made valve under high temperature. Thus, teflon/stainless steel-made valve is safe and no malfunction by thermal expansion.

  • Phase stabilized leucite, which has high coefficient of thermal expansion, was synthesized, and its thermal expansion behavior was investigated. The homogeneous leucite phase was synthesized by solid state reaction from the mixture of $K_2CO_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$. and its stabilization from tetragonal to cubic phase was attempted by adding $Cs_2CO_3$ into starting materials. And fine powder with an average particle size of a few hundreds ${\mu}m$ were fabricated by planetary milling. During milling, amorphization of leucite was observed and recrystallized after heat treatment. The thermal expansion behavior of tetragonal and cubic leucite has measured and discussed. The average coefficient of thermal expansion of tetragonal and cubic phase leucite from room temperature to $750^{\circ}C$ was $21.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and $14.5{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The LAS system with good thermal properties has a narrow range of firing and sintering temperature near the melting point. So it is difficult to sinter LAS to dense sintered body. In this study, the petalite (Li2O.Al2O3.8SiO2) with good thermal properties, was taken as a base composition, and zironia was added in this composition to broaden the firing range, increase the mechanical strength, and control the thermal expansion. The thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. The results are as follows; 1. Zirconia phase was formed in LAS matrix and apparent porosity was decreased from 0.9% to 0.5%, and the mechanical strength was kincreased from 112 MPa to 190 MPa, by the densification of body. 2. The composition Li2O.Al2O3.8SiO2 has a negative thermal expansion, but the thermal expansion was changed from negative to positive with the densification and the increase of amount of synthesized zircon phase which had positive thermal expansion. The coefficient of thermal expansion, with the increase of the amount of additives, was low as -0.74~9.06$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$ in 20~$600^{\circ}C$, and 7.95~20.13$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$ in 20~80$0^{\circ}C$. 3. The mechanical strength of LZ15 (added with ZrO2.SiO2 15 wt%) composition thermal-shocked was stable in the temperature range of 0~$600^{\circ}C$, but rapidly decreased due to the increase of thermal expansion above $600^{\circ}C$.

  • Thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as thermal shock, thermal expansion, thermal cracking were experimentally investigaed using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. The effect of thermal shock did not appear when the heating speed was under 3$^{\circ}C$/min. and there existed little difference between multi-staged cyclic heating and single-cycled heating. Thermal expansion of rocks was affected by mineral composition, crack porosity and the degree of thermal craking. In quartz-beraring multimineralic rocks such as Iksan granite and Cheonan tonalite, the thermal expansion coefficient increaseed continuously with temperature rise, but that of Chung-ju dolomite which was a monomineralic rock showed a constant value for the temperature above 250$^{\circ}C$, Chung-ju dolomite yielded the lowest critical threshold temperature(Tc) of 100$^{\circ}C$ and unstable thermal cracking was initiated above the new threshold temperature(Tc')of 300$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc' thermal cracks grew but they were not interconnected. Iksan granite showed closing of microcracks to the temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$, then expanded linearly to Tc of 200$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc, thermal cracking was initiated and progressed rapidly and almost all the grain boundaries were cracked at 600$^{\circ}C$. Cheonan tonalite also showed similar behavior to iksan granite except that Tc was 350$^{\circ}C$ and that thermal cracks propagated more rapidly. Thermal expansions calculated by Turner's equation were found to be valid in predicting the thermal expansion and cracking behavior of rocks.
