Mineral electrical insulating oil, which is widely used in transformers, exhibits excellent cooling performance and transformer efficiency. However, given that it is composed of petroleum-based components, it is weak in terms of biodegradability. This causes environmental problems in case of leakage and a low flash point, which is a factor that would cause great damage in the event of a fire in a substation. In this context, the use of eco-friendly electric insulating oil composed of bio-based vegetable oil and synthetic ester, which has excellent biodegradability and flame retardancy performance, has recently been expanded to the field of electric power, and various research and development (R&D) studies are in progress. According to different research results, vegetable oil and synthetic ester manufacturing technology, thermal stability, oxidation stability, property change, and quality control, which are characteristics of eco-friendly electrical insulating oils, are major factors affecting the maintenance of insulating oil properties. In addition, power companies have established and operated quality control standards according to the use of eco-friendly electrical insulating oil as they expand the exploitatoin of renewable energy in electricity production. In particular, deterioration and oxidation characteristics were jointly identified in R&D as an important influencing factor according to the content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids present in vegetable oils and synthetic esters in power transformer applications.

The load-following operation of small modular reactors (SMRs) requires accurate prediction of transient behaviors that can occur in the balance of plants (BOP) and the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS). However, 1-D thermal-hydraulics analysis codes developed for safety and performance analysis have conventionally excluded the BOP from the simulation by assuming ideal boundary conditions for the main steam and feed water (MS/FW) systems, i.e., an open loop. In this study, we introduced a lumped model of BOP fluid system and coupled it with NSSS without any ideal boundary conditions, i.e., in a closed loop. Various methods for coupling boundary conditions at MS/FW were tested to validate their combination in terms of minimizing numerical instability, which mainly arises from the coupled boundaries. The method exhibiting the best performance was selected and applied to a transient simulation of an integrated NSSS and BOP system of a SMART. For a transient event with core power change of 100-20-100%, the simulation exhibited numerical stability throughout the system without any significant perturbation of thermal-hydraulic parameters. Thus, the introduced boundary-condition coupling method and BOP fluid system model can expectedly be employed for the transient simulation and performance analysis of SMRs requiring daily load-following operations.

Large Loss-of-Coolant Accidents analyzed in Final Safety Analysis Reports are usually covered by Reactor Inlet Header. Reactor Outlet Header and Primary Pump Suction breaks as representative cases. In this study we analyze the total (guillotine) break of an Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) pipe located at the ECCS injection point into the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS). It was expected that thermal-hydraulic behaviors in the PHT and ECC systems are different from those of a Reactor Inlet Header break, having an equivalent break size. The main purpose of this study is to get insights on the differences occurred between the two cases and to assess these differences from the phenomenon behavior point of view. It was also investigated whether the ECCS line break analysis results could be covered by header break analysis results. The study reveals that as the intact loop has almost the same behavior in both analyzed cases. broken loop behavior is different mostly regarding sheath temperature in the critical core pass and pressure decrease in the broken Reactor Inlet Header. Differences are also met in the ECCS behavior and in event sequences timings.

Time series of the relative sea levels at the selected tide-gauge stations in the North Pacific and historical aerial photographs in the Hawaiian Islands are analyzed. Long-term rising trend of sea level ranges from +1 to +5 mm/yr at most of the stations, which is primarily due to global warming and tectonic motion of the plates. The annual and interannual fluctuations of sea level result from the thermal expansion/contraction of sea-surface layer due to the annual change of the solar radiation and possibly from a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon associated with an ENSO event, respectively. Sea-level changes in three different time-scales (linear trend. annual oscillation, and interannual fluctuation) and their quantitative contribution to the shoreline changes as a result of long-term cross-shore sediment transport arc hypothesized.

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate at high load in HCCI combustion. It was found that fuel stratification offers good potential to achieve a staged combustion event and reduced pressure-rise rates. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. Numerical analysis is conducted with single and multi-zones model and detailed chemical reaction scheme is done by chemkin and senkin. Calculation result shows that proper fuel stratification prolongs combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate. Besides IMEP, combustion efficiency and indicated thermal efficiency keep constant. However, too wide fuel stratification increases pressure rise rate and CO and NOx emissions in exhaust gas.
Two different friction materials (organic and low-metallic pads) for automotive brakes were studied to investigate the anti-fading phenomena during stop. The anti-fading phenomena were pronounced more in the case of using low metallic friction materials than organic friction materials. The main cause of the anti-fading phenomena was the high dependence of friction coefficient on a sliding speed. The anti-fading was prominent when the initial brake temperature was high in the case of low-metallic friction materials due to the strong stick-slip event at high temperature. On the other hand, the anti-fading was not severe in organic friction materials and the effect was reduced at high braking temperature due to the thermal decomposition of organic friction materials. The strong stickslip phenomena of low metallic friction materials at high temperature induced high torque oscillations during drag test. During this experiment two different braking control modes (pressure controlled and torque controlled modes) were compared. The type of the control mode used for brake test significantly affected the friction characteristics.

Mechanical properties of zirconium cladding were evaluated by ring tension test to simulate Reactivity-Initiated Accident (RIA) at high burnup situation as an out-reactor test. Zircaloy-4 cladding was hydrided up to 1000 ppm as well as oxidized up to $100\;{\mu}m$ to simulate high-burnup situation. After simulated high-burnup treatment, ring tension test was carried out from 0.01 to 1/sec to correlate with actual RIA event. The results showed that ductility and circumferential toughness decreased with the hydrogen content and oxide thickness. Hydride generated inside cladding acted as brittle failure. Oxygen influenced cladding tube by the reduction of load bearing area, oxygen embrittlement, and thermal aging. Correlation between in-reactor RIA parameter like fuel enthalpy and out-reactor toughness was performed and showed a reasonable result.

This paper focuses on the applicability of a continuous monitoring method on trace sulfur compounds in the ambient air by TD and GC/PFPD. The target compounds for monitoring include H2S(hydrogen sulfide), Methyl mercaptan, Dimethyl Sulfide, and Dimethyl disulfide. The result of QA/QC on monitoring instruments satisfies all the standards of Odor Measurement and Analysis Method, showing that the reproductivity of the compounds by concentration is within 10%, linearity is above 0.98 of a correlation efficient, method detection limit is 0.16 ppb by MM standard, and recovery rate is over 70%. Monitoring was conducted for two years from March 2006 to February 2008. As a result of the monitoring, the average concentration of H2S was 0.08 ppb, with the maximum concentration at 16.15 ppb. The result indicates that it is reasonable to do continuous monitoring as there appears a spontaneous event of high concentration by the condition of the site during monitoring odor-causing substances. Therefore, it is suggested that the continuous monitoring method used in this paper is appropriate to identify the characteristics of sudden occurrence and concentration variations of sulfur compounds.
Recently, Andong Reservoir and Imha Reservoir located in Nakdong River basin (Korea) are being connected by a tunnel (length 2km, diameter 5.5m) for a conjunctive use. The objectives of this study were to construct a two dimensional(2D) laterally-averaged model for two reservoirs, and examine the effects of connection on the water transportation and temperature stratification in the reservoirs. The 2D models for each reservoir were calibrated using field data obtained in 2006, and applied to the linked system for the year of 2002 when a severe flood intruded into Imha Reservoir during the typhoon Rusa. Simulation results showed that 364 million $m^3$ of water can be conveyed from Imha to Andong, while 291 million $m^3$ of water from Andong to Imha after connection. It resulted in 1.38 m increase of annual averaged water level in Andong Reservoir, whereas 3.75 m decrease in Imha Reservoir. The structures of thermal stratification in both reservoirs were influenced in line with the flow exchanges. In Andong Reservoir, the location of thermocline moved upward about 10 m compared to an independent operation. The results imply that the persistent turbidity issue of Imha Reservoir might be shifted to Andong Reservoir during a severe flood event after connection.

Occasionally, equipment in a distribution system fails due to damage from weather, vandalism, or other causes. Failures and unexpected events do not always occur as and where expected. Therefore, a good contingency plan, multi-zone or otherwise, provides flexibility by locating switches at various strategic locations so that parts of a feeder can be picked up in the event of line outages at various places. It is possible to create feeder system layout that achieve remarkable contingency support economics, even as their normal peak loading levels approach thermal capacity, by utilizing six, seven, or even nine switchable zones per feeder. But many switchable zones per feeder are of questionable practicality and effectiveness, because of the complexity and time required for the switching operation. In practice, a zonal scheme with between three and four zones will usually provide complete contingency backup for all feeders. Line switches have both capital and maintenance costs, the planning for multi-zonal schemes is considerably more difficult than or loop or single-zone systems, and the required switching operations required during contingencies take more time. But multi-zonal schemes are used because these costs come to far less than the cost of additional capacity required for loop or single-zone. In this paper, we present the optimal number of switchable zones per feeder in Kora distribution system.
