  • Thermal batteries are used in military power sources that require robustness and long storage life for applications in missiles and torpedoes. $FeS_2$ powder is currently used as a cathode material because of its high specific energy density, environmental non-toxicity, and low cost. $MS_2$ (M = Fe, Ni, Co) cathodes have been explored as novel candidates for thermal batteries in many studies; however, the discharge characteristics (1, 2, 3 plateau) of single cells in thermal batteries with different cathodes have not been elucidated in detail. In this study, we independently analyzed the discharge voltage and calculated the total polarizations of single cells using $MS_2$ cathodes. Based on the results of this study, we propose $NiS_2$ as a potential cathode material for use in thermal batteries.

  • As flying vehicle's speed is getting faster, the magnitude of aerodynamic heating is getting bigger. High-speed vehicle's exterior skin is heated to hundreds of degrees, and electrical equipments inside the vehicle are heated, simultaneously. Since allowable temperature of electrical equipments is low, they are vulnerable to effect of aerodynamic heating. These days, lots of techniques are applied to estimate temperature of electrical equipments in flight condition, and to make them thermally safe from heating during flight. In this paper, new model building technique for thermal safety analysis is introduced. To understand internal thermal transient characteristic of electrical equipment, simple heating experiment was held. From the result of experiment, we used our new building technique to build thermal analysis model which reflects thermal transient characteristic of original equipment. This model can provide internal temperature differences of electrical equipment and temperature change of specific unit which is thermally most vulnerable part in the equipment. So, engineers are provided much more detailed thermal analysis data for thermal safety of electrical equipment through this technique.

  • The electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) recently has been used in flight control fields for aircraft because of its benefits of minimizing oil leakage and weight, improving safety, and etc. while independently operating the hydraulic power source and eliminating complex hydraulic piping. The aircraft of which EHA is installed inside, has the thermal management issue of EHA, because of its limited cooling source as compared with the aircraft which installs the traditional central hydraulic system. So, the thermal analysis model which predicts the thermal characteristics of EHA, is required to resolve this thermal management issue. In this study, an oil circulation circuit inside the hydraulic power module comprised of hydraulic pump and electrical motor for EHA was applied. This is for the purpose of developing the internal rotary group of hydraulic power module, which operates under the conditions of high rotation speed and hydraulic pressure. After formulating an appropriate thermal analysis model, the thermal analysis results with oil cooled or no oil cooled hydraulic control module were compared and reviewed, for the purpose of predicting the thermal characteristics of EHA.

  • Nowadays, SELENE-2 is under development for the moon explorer rover in Japan. AXS(Active X-ray Spectrometer) sensor development among the candidated payloads will be on going by the world-wide co-operation. The thermal design, analysis and test will be specially performed by Korean institutes. CFD techniques are used for the conceptual design and analysis. Thin-shell plate meshes being applied by Monte-Carlo Ray Tracing Method are generated for the thermal radiation analysis. Lumped capacity model is employed for the thermal conduction simulation of the AXS payload itself. Various shapes of the payload configuration with thermal boundary conditions are proposed and selected on the purpose of the analysis of the initial design. The results of the analysis are supposed to be used as the baseline for the further detailed design of the AXS payload in the future.

  • The thermal contamination of the Younggwang coastal marine ecosystem has been investigated using space borne thermal infrared data acquired over the period 1985-2003 by the Landsat and NOAA satellites. The analysis of AVHRR data brought out the general pattern and extension of thermal plume while TM data yielded more accurate information about the plume shape, dimension, dispersion direction etc. The examination of sea surface temperature (SST) computed from these images clearly indicates that the thermal plume extends 70 to100km southward during summer and 50 to70km northwestward during winter monsoons. The maximum plume temperature was 29$^{\circ}C$ in summer and 12$^{\circ}C$ in winter. The comparative analysis shows that the temperature retrieved from TM is slightly higher (1.8$^{\circ}C$, 3$^{\circ}C$ and 2.2$^{\circ}C$ for the images of 98/11/10, 99/05/05 and 99/05/21 respectively) than those derived from AVHRR data. The correlation coefficient between the TM-derived SST and AVHRR-derived SST was 0.72.

  • With the development of themal observatory device(TOD), thermal camouflage system has been applied not only to the weapon system but also to the combat suit for soldiers. In this paper, the characteristic of thermal radiation of human body depending on the clothing material properties was analyzed through numerical simulations. The bioheat equation with thermoregulatory model was solved to obtain the realistic surface temperature of human body and these results are combined with the emissivity of human skin and clothing in order to calculate the thermal signature from the human body. According to each thermal resistance of clothing, the optimal background radiance which makes contrast radiance intensity(CRI) be lowest is different. Also, the average CRI variation per thermal resistance change is about twice as much as the case of evaporative resistance change.

  • The initial thermal analysis needs to be fast and efficient to reduce the feedback time for the optimal electronic equipment designing. In this study, a thermal model is developed by using power consumption measurement values of each functional breadboard, that is, semi-empirical power dissipation method. In modeling heat dissipated EEE parts, power dissipation is imposed evenly on the EEE part footprint area which is projected to the printed circuit board, and is called surface heat model. The application of these methods is performed in the development of a command and telemetry unit (CTU) for a geostationary satellite. Finally, the thermal cycling test is performed to verify the applied thermal analysis methods.

  • Objective: The main objective of this study was to define molecular mechanisms associated with thermal stress responses of chickens from commercial broilers (BR, Ross 308), Thai native chickens (NT) and crossbreeds between BR×NT (H75). Methods: Twenty days before reaching specific market age, chickens from each breed were divided into control and thermal-stressed groups. The stressed groups were exposed to a cyclic thermal challenge (35℃±1℃ for 6 h, followed by 26℃±1℃ for 18 h) for 20 days. Control group was raised under a constant temperature of 26℃±1℃. Pectoralis major (n = 4) from each group was collected for transcriptome analysis using HiSeq Illumina and analysis of glycogen and lactate. Gene expression patterns between control and thermal-stressed groups were compared within the same breeds. Results: Differentially expressed transcripts of 65, 59, and 246 transcripts for BR, NT, and H75, respectively, were revealed by RNA-Seq and recognized by Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes database. Pathway analysis underlined altered glucose homeostasis and protein metabolisms in all breeds. The signals centered around phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling, focal adhesion, and MAPK signaling in all breeds with slight differences in molecular signal transduction patterns among the breeds. An extensive apoptosis was underlined for BR. Roles of AMPK, MAPK signaling and regulation of actin cytoskeleton in adaptive response were suggested for H75 and NT chickens. Lower glycogen content was observed in the breast muscles of BR and NT (p<0.01) compared to their control counterparts. Only BR muscle exhibited increased lactate (p<0.01) upon exposure to the stress. Conclusion: The results provided a better comprehension regarding the associated biological pathways in response to the cyclic thermal stress in each breed and in chickens with different growth rates.
